Herman Cain acknowledges his electric border fence idea isn't a joke after all
CBS News ^ | October 17, 2011 | Sarah Huisenga

PHOENIX - After first apologizing for suggesting an electric fence along the border, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain told reporters here Monday that he still thinks it's a good idea for controlling illegal immigration.

"I'm not walking away from that," he said.

Cain has spent the last several days explaining a controversial comment about building an electrified fence along the U.S. - Mexico border that he said could kill people trying to enter the country illegally. On Sunday, he said his comments were "a joke." But talking to reporters here after a meeting here with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has made a national reputation for cracking down on illegal immigrants, Cain reversed course.

Initially Cain apologied when told his remarks had upset some in the state. "Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa," he said, using the Latin formula for expressing contrition. But when a reporter challenged his description of his comments, saying he didn't seem to be telling a joke, the retired pizza executive acknowledged: "You're right." He said he still believes in the need for a border fence "and it might be electrified."

Romney interfered with the Mass primary last year
and gave Massachusetts Deval Patrick.

Romney WILL interfere with the Florida and Nevada
and other primaries. It will give Obama a second
term.

ROMNEY has always been for Obama, hence his
team attacked Gov. Palin on the eve of Election 2008
for Obama and Romney’s DNC.

Go snitch on someone else, son

It ain't snitchin' when it's the truth, KID.

It's not advisable for a n00b like you to announce that you would "rather have Rudy right now".

I'd be sniffing the air for ozone if I were you. Pro-Rudy comments are not well received on this conservative website.

People think because they have never heard of them they are outsiders. Cain was Dole/Kemp top campaign adviser.

I was thinking about our candidates and while we all act like we want outsiders there are only two governors running. The rest made their name in Washington.

I see this as a States vs. Washington election. I have been seeing the Republican governors buck Washington more and more during the Obama reign. From Jan Brewer on the immigration to Scott Walker on Unions to Rick Perry on the EPA and Bobby Jindal on gulf oil exploration.

Just what makes you think your property is reflective of the entire US/Mexico border? ..........

You live in Illinois.

Sort of unseemly to lecture Texans on what the terrain on the border with Mexico is like.

There is a lot of truth to the claim that anyone who wants that job should be disqualified from getting it.

How then, do we select an honorable candidate to serve as President?

“How does he plan to run it on the Rio Grande? Our horse fence runs along a creek and between the flooding, fast growing weeds shorting it and burning through and the horses stamping around in the mud making the poles fall down it needs frequent fixing. And THAT’S only 10 acres!”

I suspect that we could figure out a way...

“You think they made up the Herman Cain quotes?”

CBS is dishonestly reporting his jokes as if they were serious comments. I assure you that nobody who was there and heard them live was confused.

The “apology” was the joke.

How’s this. I’d rather have a turd than Romney... Does that make me pro-turd?

I have no interest in silly banter with you. If you disagree with my posts, you can ignore or refute...

I’m here to discuss the issues, not this bs

That picture is too funny thanks. The best Perry can do is look like Dukakis in the tank.

LOL.

I don’t care whether he endorsed Romney 4 years ago. I supported Romney 4 years ago. SO did other conservatives, some early, some late. We were given a host of unelectable conservatives and bad choices for candidates with a chance. We had to make the best of bad choices. Many of us thought Fred Thompson was our salvation, he shot up in the polls in September, but then McCain, who everybody wrote off when he fell in the polls to single digits, shot back up in December and Thompson dropped out and all that was left was Romney/Giuliani/Huckabee/McCain.

It was so bad Rush Limbaugh was telling people they could vote for Giuliani in Florida. But the conservatives split their votes, and we got McCain.

What concerns ME is that Cain supports Romney right NOW. He has said Romney is a good choice for PResident, he says almost nothing bad about Romney, just a few snide remarks. He has also clearly stated that if the race is between Perry and Romney, Cain is going to vote for Romney.

It’s a moot point if Cain gets the nomination. Except Cain could pick Romney as his VP, and Cain has health issues so we could end up with Romney anyway.

My question is, if Cain falters and it’s Perry or Romney, will any Cain supporters state now that they’ll vote for Romney over Perry?

The “apology” was the joke.

Now the apology was THE joke?

I thought the "electric fence" was the joke.

But you're right --- the fence can't be the joke now because it's back on Cain's policy train.

I'll check back later.

Personally, I have always viewed political elections, particularly at the National level, a selection of the lesser of evils.

I don't believe anyone conservative enough to agree with me on nearly every issue would ever even get considered.

I don’t see how this helps—saying something, then saying something is a joke, then turn around and say it is not a joke.

This is just one example of the problem of lacking political experience. I don't know WHERE Cain is on this issue now. Was it a joke? What's the serious? And why are you making flippant remarks about such things? Are you having fun running for president?

America is faced with deadly serious peril. Address it accordingly. Nobody is looking for comic relief, Mr. Cain. We're looking for an American president.

> The Berlin Wall was a very popular tourist spot too.

The Berlin Wall was built more to keep people IN than to keep people out. Many died trying to climb over it and run for freedom in the West.

I agree there was crappy choices in that election. But if it is appropriate criticism of Perry to support Giuliani in those limited choices, why does the same not apply to Cain?

You know it’s bad when Herman Cain’s changing policy positions aka jokes, are both showing on the FR site thread roll column.

You mean the guy who was an Air Force Captain and pilot. That guy seems out of place in that picture?

I used to take you and yours seriously but you've become so fearful you are clearly trying to paint a picture in someones mind and you look stupid doing it.

Line up 1000 people and ask them who looks like they belong. Perry every time and that's because he does belong.

You're the only one who can answer that, although I would have to say that your posting suggests that you ARE full of it, LOL

Ok, seriously now, NOBODY in their right mind wants Romney. However Romney and Rudy are cut from the same cloth. Both of them are pro-abortion, both of them are Rockefeller Republicans, and neither of them will never see an endorsement from Free Republic.

What we're seeing here is internecine warfare between the Perry faction and the Cain faction, each accuses the other's candidate of being a stalking horse for Romney, and it does not bode well for the upcoming primaries.

Personally, if Romney ends up as the nominee, I think it possible that Sarah Palin will launch a third party effort.
