Perry on the Ropes?
National Journal ^ | Oct. 11, 2011 | Staff

Rick Perry’s six-foot frame seemed to slump in his chair during Tuesday’s Republican presidential primary debate, at a time when he should have been rising to the challenge.

The Texas governor sorely needed to notch a solid debate performance to arrest his freefall in the polls and reclaim his status as the biggest threat to the Republican to beat, Mitt Romney. He didn’t, reviving questions about his readiness for the national stage and raising new ones about his ability to sustain an initial, $17 million fundraising blitz.

Unlike previous debates, the eight Republican candidates on the stage in Hanover, N.H. were seated around a table instead of standing behind podiums. Perry fidgeted in his chair. He gave rambling responses, let Romney get off without a serious blow, and was caught on camera wincing in response to his rivals.

While Perry hoped to make the debate a referendum on one of Romney’s biggest liabilities – the similar requirements in the health insurance law he signed as governor of Massachusetts and the federal law President Obama’s enacted – there was far more discussion of the catchy “9-9-9’’ economic plan offered by his surging rival, Herman Cain.

When Perry finally had a chance to put Romney on the spot, the ex-Massachusetts governor delivered a strong counterpunch that took the sting out of the loaded question about his health care record. Turning the table, Romney said he was “proud’’ that he took on a major problem. He noted that his home state has the lowest number of uninsured kids in the nation, while Texas has the highest.

As much as I dislike Romney, I would vote for him before I vote for a candidate pushing a national sales tax.

Cain could help hinself by getting something to talk about besides 9 9 9. It's become a joke and being laughed at.

The only one I really don't like is Huntsman...I just don't like him...

Good point. I don’t believe we should involve the Libs in any part of our selection process. They gave us McCain and with the exception of Sarah that was a cluster F of significance. Now we’re on the edge of sinking and we involve those bastards again. GRRRRRRRR

Maybe Cain should knock one of the 9s off his plan. I don’t like the idea of a 9% national sales tax. Here in Florida the state sales tax is already 6% so an additional 9% would make it 15%. Ridiculously high.

I didn't watch the debate last night but I can tell you why Perry was not allowed to go back at Romney..It is because the liberals want Romney to win so he can be the one that faces Obama in Nov 2012 so the liberals will do all in their power to cut Perry whom I think could beat Obama in 2012 ..I do not think that Cain can beat Obama..They know most in the country do not like Romney and Obama thinks he will win over Romney which I am sure he will..So it is time to stop the bickering and get behind someone that can win against the Devil in the white house..

I just cannot believe that people are OK with a new national sales tax.

” I still do not see any candidate that is a real threat to Obama’s 2nd term. “

That makes at least 2 of us . Looks to me like they are gonna throw 2012 , too . 2 party one card monte as Michael Savage rightfull says . The fix is in . It should be obvious .

"As much as I dislike Romney, I would vote for him before I vote for a candidate pushing a national sales tax."

You make an excellent point.

As much as I like Cain, I don't like that--unless the income tax were also abolished. The very next time the Democrats seize control of the government, they will increase BOTH the income tax and the national sales tax, and they will have an even greater money-cow to milk--to funnel the hard-earned money from the American people into their own bank accounts, which is all they are about in the first place.

I oppose a national sales tax unless it is part of a complete overhaul of the tax system which includes the abolition of the income tax.

What we leaned from the debates....when Perry is staring back at Romney with that squinty look (and goofy grin), there's nobody home.

Perry can't answer a substantive question....his MO is to revert back to Texas talk-----"I'm the greatest thing in this race."

He "says" he created jobs---but wont give out the details. That's b/c he doesnt know the practical details of job creation.

In Texas he creates paperwotk about jobs by giving away tax dollars with the proviso that recipients cough up campaign donations........that's how Perry managed to enter the 2012 race with several PACs teeming with millions of dollars

Just wow:

Rick Perry's troubles weren't limited to the debate floor on Tuesday night.

After the Washington Post/Bloomberg forum, the Texas governor made an appearance at a Dartmouth College fraternity house, where he appeared to mix up the dates of the Revolutionary War.

The gaffe occurred when Perry was asked about states' rights during a question-and-answer session at Dartmouth's Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

"Our Founding Fathers never meant for Washington, D.C. to be the fount of all wisdom," Perry said, per ABC's Arlette Saenz. "As a matter of fact they were very much afraid if that because they'd just had this experience with this far-away government that had centralized thought process and planning and what have you, and then it was actually the reason that we fought the revolution in the 16th century was to get away from that kind of onerous crown if you will."

I am watching the debate right now, it has about 15 minutes left, and he hasn’t impressed me much....to quote Shania.

each and every one designed to help Romney and hurt anyone showing promise

I wouldn't worry about that. These debates aren't watched by people who can be swayed by the liberal media. Only the party faithful are paying attention at this point and are just trying to figure out which of the non-Romneys they'll support.

It's why Romney's numbers don't move.

Same here --6% and add 2.25 local.

Food and meds aren't taxed in TX...they would be included in 9 9 9.

9 9 9 is beginning to sound like "The rents too damn high."

Other than Cain’s political opponents and their supporters who fear him, who’s laughing?

It does. The 9-9-9 plan is a transition to a pure national sales tax.

The reason Texas has a lot of “uninsured” people is that we have more wetbacks than any other state. Of course Governer Perry chose not to state the obvious to the BHO licking MSM morons

We also have no food or medicine sales tax here in Florida. So under the 999 plan both would be taxed at 9% and we STILL would have an income tax? Like I posted, one of the 9s in 999 has to go.
