Midnight on St Mary Street in Cardiff and everything is exactly as expected. Half a dozen young women slump in a gutter, men urinate outside a health-food shop and, as hordes stagger between nightclubs, someone lifts up a blow-up doll with a sex toy protruding out of it.
The street smells of urine and lager, police struggle to break up a fight outside the Walkabout bar and a paramedic bundles a comatose girl on to a wheelchair. But it's a quiet night for 20-year-old Naomi Jenkins. She has 'only' drunk three shots of peach schnapps, cider and three shots of Jagermeister (during a drinking game called I Have Never) and still feels 'a bit sober'. Her friend Hannah Freeman, 19, was punched in a fight and stumbles about swearing and searching for a bathroom.
'We only do embarrassing things when we're really drunk,' Naomi says. 'I kiss random men in the street and Hannah has had sex behind a chicken coop.' She screams with laughter as Hannah lurches unsteadily in the stairwell of Charleston Bar and Grill on Caroline Street (known locally as Chip Alley) and unashamedly urinates in front of us.

Yes, and they’ve lost faith. Ever read about Russia in the last few years before the revolution? All kinds of behavior we’d term near-suicidal, amazing debauchery and near-total prevalence of the “why should I care” attitude toward everything. Makes me worry even more for my family in the UK. They aren’t like this, thankfully, but if this is indeed par for the course, it might not be too long before the islamists make their move.
That takes a careful aim!
I went to work in my bathrobe, when I had a horrible skin rash during my first pregnancy. My boss said it was more important for me to be there than to be dressed! I came in at 5:00 a.m., he put me in a back-corner cubicle, and people passed me tax forms over the partition.
After a few days, the dermatologist gave me lovely steroids, and I was able to wear real clothes again.
Thanks for that! Hogarth is a bit of a horror, isn’t he? I always look at his prints in Cecil Court in London (cheap prints that they display outdoors). I would never buy them of course - too real, too ugly. Nothing’s changed.
Sad, indeed. This shocks us, but for the most part the Brits are used to it. No problems - as has been said by others here, the Muslims will take care of things. What’s the penalty, 40 lashes?
Lack of positive, loving role models (mothers and fathers) who exude and project confidence and self-respect, yet retain their perspective and humility.
Everything in moderation, including moderation. Real men, real women.
That’s somebody’s little girl in the gutter, and the bloody wanker is probably more tanked than his kid.
“My old man is drunker than a barrel full of monkeys and my old lady she don’t care...”
Wow those are some seriously hopeless people. I’m sure it’s not just the young women.
We don't pass out. We just fight and tell stories. :)
Mardi Gras, college (and even high school) spring break, any bar district that attracts a lot of young people, Frat Row on any college campus, any bar district on New Year's Eve ... it's not like this kind of behavior is unprecedented. It might be cause for concern if it's unusually widespread or severe, but you won't put it in perspective based on a tabloid story.
“We don’t pass out We just fight and tell stores..”
We also sing sad but wonderful songs, too!
“Ah, those happy Norwegian drinking songs ... all about dead Irishmen ...”
(Old joke from my idle youth as a medieval reenactor ;-).
I remember a photo from a couple years ago. It was in the Sun and it was of a young lady in a leather jacket, with a VERY short skirt, with VERY long legs, passed out IN THE SNOW on a street in London. I always wondered whatever happened to her.
that’s a shame, she is going to be pissed when she sees what she did to her shoes, scraping up and down the sidewalk....
Yes, I don’t see it as anything really strange. I suppose it’s just awful photos of young girls in the gutter that upsets people. I can certainly understand that. But I’ve seen it in GB. On my block in NYC, there is an Irish pub that has a lot of wild drinking going on. But I’ve never seen a man or woman in the gutter.
In 1980, they were called “Knock me down and f**ck me shoes.”
1980 was a funnier year.
LOL!!
Helping him get the elephant out of his pajamas.
Puke breath and bad teeth will make you wish you saved the airfare.
Well, she looks pretty knocked down so she had that part covered!

Ironically and unfortunately, as part of her study she also did a bit too much applied research on the topic.
Which brings us 5 years later to an alcohol and drug devastated Amy Winehouse's later social commentary, "Rehab"
Sadly, self destructive behavior didn't work out so well for Amy and it's not working out much better for those young women.
