Herman Cain: pizza boss, radio host, ballistics expert, minister. President?
guardian.co.uk ^ | 8 October 2011 | Staff

He is the latest Tea Party favourite to burst through in the increasingly heated race for the Republican presidential nomination and see their poll numbers rocket them to frontrunner status.

However, unlike previous rightwing darlings such as Texas governor Rick Perry and Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann, wealthy businessman Herman Cain, 65, can claim to be cut from a very different sort of cloth from the average Republican candidate.

First, he is not actually a politician. Cain, whose CV includes being a radio show host, a navy ballistics expert, a Baptist minister and a Federal Reserve official, has never held elected office in his life. His most famous job was as chief executive of the fast-food firm Godfather's Pizza.

Yet none of that seemed to matter to the cheering crowds at the Values Voter Summit in a Washington DC hotel late last week. There was much to celebrate. A Zogby opinion poll had just boosted Cain into first place in the race, with 38% of the vote, compared with 18% for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Perry trailed in third place with 12%. The study even showed Cain beating President Barack Obama in a match-up by 46% to 44%.

“Oh I must have forgot, you are such a badass.”

No jackass, YOU started in on me with attitude, YOU do not like getting attitude back at you.

You are a whiny, sniveling baby and I don’t care who you vote for.

“That way you aren’t taxing savings twice like the silly sales tax plans do.”

You bring up a good point, that has been discussed before between myself and other FReepers. I have not yet come up with an equal justice under law solution to that problem.

I will never, ever support a tax on income, which was instituted by a liberal/progressive (supported by the elitists of his time) in order to stifle personal freedom, institute the welfare state, consolidate power and decay our system of government. You cannot tax labor, or people will refuse to work. It’s that simple. It does not allow anyone to opt out or protest the tax, in addition to stifling productivity.

IF I believed in an income tax, then a flat income would be the most appropriate, with no deductions. But it would have to be on the order of less than 1% of income. That’s what the income tax was sold to be, anyway. But once the government gets one hand on something, it will surely grasp it with the other.

When you are using the “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it” who do you think doesn’t see it? What should conservatives assume from this?

Yes, I'm not impressed about any tax plan that includes ‘ghetto zone’ tax breaks, especially from someone that is claiming to be conservative.

Big gorilla in the room everyone seems to be ignoring. lol

I noticed it and looked on the net, couldn't find anything. Unlike some people, I don't like to make grandiose posts without being able to back them up. This is FR, I thought we were supposed to cite claims we make. I couldn't refute it.

It's up to Beagle to show where this comes from.

My impression is that a sales tax is even worse than a VAT tax.

Does the title “Rules for Radicals” come to mind? It certainly does. (Saul Alinski.)

Cain - the neighbor who makes all the houses in the neighborhood increase in value...because he can fix anything, design anything, get stuff done and throws great pool parties where everyone shows up to share life, laughs and good food.

And don't forget, Cain could throw the biggest 4th of July fireworks celebration because a.) he IS a rocket scientist and b.) his degree in mathematics will assure everyone that the fireworks will launch and land where they're supposed to.

I read some of these sneers and smirks about this good man, and can't help but wonder if the smirkers are just biding their time until their sheets come back from the dry cleaners.

You said relate “to everyone.” I assume you meant “the American People” when saying “everyone.” He won’t appeal to everyone by being a conservative, he’ll appeal to conservatives by being conservative. People can support someone someone who loves America, even if they may not be conservative. People will be disinclined to support a leader who dislikes America (people are turning away from Obama in droves). Thus, to answer how will he appeal to everyone (your question), is that (if it is at all possible) he will do it by being an American first.

You’ll have to be more specific and articulate in your question if you’re looking for an answer that is different than the answer to your original question. Unless your question was rhetorical, in which case no answer I gave would matter.

He only raised $2.6 during the entire last quarter, that’s approximately $28,000 per day. OK, now you say he’s tearing up the polls, so, what has that done to his contributions. What are they per day now. Perry averaged $380,000 per day so if he’s really that much better then Perry it must be upwards of at least $400,000 per day at the very least. What are they? As a devoted supporter, I’m sure you can get them to give you the figures.

“The economy is on life support, and you have some cities and some communities where it’s not even on life support,” Cain said. “They’ve disconnected the tubing and they’re dying. How about Detroit? Because 9-9-9 is so simple, we can create empowerment zone incentives for whole cities in a way that you couldn’t do with the existing tax code. You’d have to go through too much work to figure out how you’d do it.”

Because such an empowerment zone would cut taxes on business revenue, individual income and consumer spending, Cain is convinced it would provide a major economic boost to cities like Detroit.

Are you kidding me? I still have Rick Perry at the top of my list, but Cain is right up there, at position 1.5. Herman Cain is eminently qualified; not only does he have substantial experience as a chief executive, he’s also been in government before - as deputy chair and chair of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

There are other reasons to ding Mr. Cain, but lack of relevant experience is definitely not one of them.

A lot of Cain’s supporters have no clue about it. He talks perty, so he’s their guy, and they simply decide to support 9-9-9 because it’s their guys plan. I’m sure a lot of these people were on Trump’s bandwagon. I know a lot of them were on Palin’s. Definitely some Fred heads. Enough said.

First, he is not actually a politician...

That is the most important aspect of his appeal. Professional politicians are a joke. They have created the problems we are suffering under now. When our forefathers designed our system of government, it was never intended that people with no background in anything substantial be elected into office and allowed to govern.

So many in office today are there only because they want power, fame, fortune, but they have never gained real-life experience and have gone from college to some menial position in some political office and began campaigning for public office almost immediately. They are not in Washington because they love their country and want to give back some of their acquired knowledge and experience...they are there because they want everyone to love them. Present invader of the White House included.

Cain is below the level of novice. His serious lack of Governmental experience is illustrated in such a ridiculous plan. He just does not know that he is doing. We cannot afford to experiment, especially right now.

Few people mention how poorly Cain did in the two debates prior to the recent one and the reason was, the questions were based on economics, foreign policy, etc, and Cain’s answers were dismal. I completely wrote him off after those two debates, as well as, seeing how poorly he has been running his campaign.

Keep in mind, Cain is a self-proclaimed “American first, black second, and conservative third.” Don’t be surprised by things like “empowerment zones” and the like..

I concur with you. I have my reservations about Rick Perry, but you can be damn sure that if the November 2012 ballot offers a choice between Governor Perry and our LM ('Little Mussolini'), I'm throwing the lever HARD for the Governor from Texas, no doubt about it.

My candidate is Herman Cain at this point. I intend to promote him, contribute to him, and do what I can to spread the message about a good American conservative (who just so happens to be black) that has a proven record of success in the business sector, is able to inspire people and get them focused on the issues before us, and the only candidate I will NOT vote for is Mitt-Witt Romney, and as much as I intend to work for Cain, I will devote equal effort to stop Romney in every way possible.

Thanks! And for covering for Beagle8U lol.

It appears to me he’s saying that the taxes for Detroit and other cities are so high that it’s making them die. That the current tax system is too difficult and encumbers big cities despite the fact they have options available, it’s just that no one can figure them out!

Used to work as a tax analyst, quit that because the tax system was too taxing for my brain. Had to prepare tax schedules for 43 different states and each one had different rules. And I do remember that I had to have an additional tax schedule for Massechusetts for their health care, didn’t know at the time why.

Not to mention that Cain is making the same mistakes that Thompson and Giuliani did when they skipped key states as well as the parallel money difficulties the all shared.
