Jeffress to Draw Sharp Contrast Between Perry and Romney

DALLAS, Oct. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Robert Jeffress, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church Dallas will introduce Texas Governor and 2012 Presidential GOP Candidate Rick Perry today at the 2011 Values Voter Summit in Washington, DC. The summit is held annually by Tony Perkins and Family Research Council. Jeffress' introduction will serve as his official endorsement of his fellow Texan, and is a first for the Pastor who has never publicly stood behind any political candidate.

For Jeffress, "Replacing Barack Obama is more than a political issue, it is a spiritual issue."

"Several months ago when Governor Perry was considering a run for the presidency, I had the opportunity to tell him that those of us who are evangelical Christians are looking for a candidate with three attributes: genuine commitment to Christian values, proven competency to govern, and electability. In Rick Perry we have a candidate with all three attributes."

"Some would argue that there are a number of other candidates who possess those attributes as well. However, once the smoke clears in several months. Conservative Christians will have a choice to make. Do we want a candidate who is skilled in rhetoric, or one who is skilled in leadership? Do we want someone who is a conservative out of convenience, or one who is a conservative out of conviction? Do we want a candidate who is a good, moral person, or one who is a born again follower of Jesus Christ? I believe that in Rick Perry we have a candidate who is a proven leader, a true conservative, and a committed follower of Christ."

Dr. Robert Jeffress is the host and vision behind the Pathway to Victory program that is broadcast to 1,200 television stations weekly and can be heard daily on 600 radio stations across the country. He is Senior Pastor of the 10,000 member First Baptist Church Dallas and is also the author of 17 nationally recognized books, including the 2002 Medallion Finalist, "The Solomon Secrets." Dr. Jeffress graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a D.Min, earned a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary and a B.S. degree from Baylor University.

Compare how he views the role of government to what Herman Cain says below:

Herman Cain: “The role of government, in my view, is to maintain an equal balanced playing field for the citizens and our society not to throw it out of balance.”

That does kinda make sense. I had to re-read what you said and read between the lines.

And it’s OK with you to have gay judges or pro-choice judges? I understand the workforce, but when it comes to our court system and our Supreme Court, I would rather have a conservative judge that I KNOW will not legislate from his seat.

"My attitude is that if the economy’s good for folks from the bottom up, it’s gonna be good for everybody. If you’ve got a plumbing business, you’re gonna be better off if you’re gonna be better off if you’ve got a whole bunch of customers who can afford to hire you, and right now everybody’s so pinched that business is bad for everybody and I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody." If Cain says he will appoint pro-homosexual judges, I won’t vote for him.

That sounds like socialism to me.

A couple months ago we walked out of our SBC because of the SBC’s squishy stance on amnesty (among other things specific to our church). This Perry endorsement is one more validation of our decision.

“Pop there’s a Baptist in the house!” “Son, you can run faster than me. Go sit in your mother’s lap and don’t move `til I get there.”

Here’s something that’s not even a joke. My cousin has been a Baptist minister in Italy, since the ‘70s. He has several Catholic priest friends. Once, when discussing celibacy, a priest said, “Why have one wife when you can have ‘em all?” Apparently, in that neck of the woods men gladly “share” their wives if a priest has a hankerin’ for them.

Apparently this Mike Lee of UT is a real conservative. But UT has mostly got it wrong for generations.

I can feel very safe in my belief that Perry would put conservative judges on the bench too.

Not necessarily, in 2004 Perry worked full-time to engineer the defeat for renomination of conservative Texas Supreme Court Justice Steven Wayne Smith, also the attorney in ''Hopwood v. Texas.'' I don't think you can put as much faith in Perry as you would like, but it seems he is on a downward spiral unless he can soon reverse footing.

If you live in a “safe state like TX or UT, you can sit out a Romney-Obama race, and it won’t matter or compromise your values.

I don’t think he says he WILL appoint gay judges. He just says he is fine with appointing one so long as the person is qualified. It’s a tough call, if you ask me.

I wouldn’t throw Smith into the mix. Every Repub in Texas did not want him on the bench. He managed to get 2 years on the court. But when it came to elections where the PEOPLE decided. HE LOST.

This ONE person's endorsement. The Convention cannot endorse anyone. Dr. Jefferies does not speak for the SBC’s leaders or membership.
