.. Firefighters are on the scene of a fire at Hargis Hall on the campus of Auburn University.
The severity of the fire is unknown at this time. WSFA 12 News is working to gather additional details.
Viewer photos show white smoke coming out of the top of the building, which houses the University's graduate school.
Several fire trucks and emergency units can be seen from the live camera pointed at Toomer's Corner. A webcam affixed to the Hargis Hall roof is no longer functional on Auburn University's website.
Ping to the list again. I’ll try to keep y’all updated. Since the cam is working they must have electricity. Since there is still power, it must be not too terrible. I hope. Maybe.
Prayers up
Hope all is ok. Heading to Auburn Sunday for a War Eagle Day with my high school senior daughter on Monday. She has several friends already at Auburn.
Not the first fire on the Auburn campus:
LSU defeated Auburn 19-15 in 1996 while the old Auburn Sports Arena, affectionately called “the Barn”, burned to the ground across the street from Jordan-Hare Stadium. After scoring a touchdown, Auburn trailed 17-15 and attempted the two-point conversion. LSU intercepted the pass and returned it for a 19-15 win. The fire began when a tailgater placed a barbecue grill too close to the building. Scenes of the fire were captured by ESPN during the national broadcast as flames were seen as high as the Jordan-Hare east upper-deck. The game was never delayed, and the Auburn public address announcer continually advised fans not to worry: “the stadium [was] not on fire; the flames [were] outside the stadium.” Because of the fire and the thrilling finish, the game became known as the “Barn Burner”.
Hargis has been been burned before and restored. I’ve tried to look up the history but there is too much going on here tonight. Maybe later.
War Eagle! Praying it is minor.
Oh no. I pray no one is harmed.
They’ve opened College St to one lane traveling north to south, South-to-north was always open, so maybe it is under control. I’ll be watching WSFA news later on for updates.
It’s Auburn University. There is no such school as you posted. :-) But there is the University of Alabama.
Sorry....read it wrong
No worries. I’ve been watching the Toomer’s cam to see if it is under control yet. I see good omen’s but nothing about which I can be certain.
I’m glad y’all are coming this way and I wish you a safe trip. If you are looking for a place to worship, since it is Sunday you’re coming, try Trinity Presbyterian Church in Opelika. We attend there and are blessed at hearing the Word of God expounded.
As The Plains Burn
I think that was the building that we practiced in for a performance of The Messiah when I was in school. I hate to see any of the old buildings harmed.
I saw that game on TV when it was burning. I hated to see that building burn. Had a lot of good memories there including my first date with my future husband.
And then there was the fire at the Auburn Football dorm, which burned 20 books, to which Steve Spurrier said, But the real tragedy was that 15 hadnt been colored yet.
(I miss the Old Ball Coach) ;)
And then there was the lady from Gainesville that called the police and said there were robbers in her garage. The police said they were busy, so would she just please jot down their jersey numbers.
I think I had heard the coloring book joke before. HaHa
I am happy to see Spurier at SC. I think we have his number. I will say I spent a miserable night in The Swamp when FL beat the stew out of Auburn. Must have been in early 90’s. My daughter got her Master’s there.
I think you may be correct about that. The building has character! I’m trying to hunt up some news this AM.
