In a shock development Thursday evening, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) triggered a rarely-used procedural option informally called the nuclear option to change the Senate rules.
The surprise move stunned Republicans, who did not expect Reid to bring heavy artillery to what had appeared to have been a hum-drum legislative knife fight.
Reid appealed a ruling from the chair that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) does not need consent to force a vote on a motion to suspend the rules to consider an amendment after cloture has already been approved.
The maneuver is highly arcane but momentous. If a simple majority of the Senate votes to uphold Reids appeal, the Senates rules will have been changed by the unilateral action of one party.
Republicans had considered using this maneuver, dubbed the nuclear option in 2005, to change Senate rules to prohibit the filibuster of judicial nominees. Democrats decried the plan and the crisis was resolved by a bipartisan agreement forged by 14 rank-and-file senators known as the Gang of 14.
This is a Fluster Cluck, it could start in the Senate and go nowhere IMHO...
On the heels of NC Gov Purdue’s comments about canceling elections this is really showing us what the Dems are made of. Wonder if there will be 6 or 7 Dem Senators who will go against their “leader?”
Only problem. When the stupid party is back in charge they’ll let themselves be demagogued into adhering to the cloture rule that won’t exist anymore.
They'll try to change it back as soon as it's to their advantage. Abiding by the rules they agreed to would be the honorable thing to do, so don't expect it.
He'll rue this day too...
Woooooo!
And we won't need no Steenkin' Nuclear Option.
“I believe youre correct. The Rats better understand what goes around comes around.”
LOL- We are talking about the republican party. They will never do it and if some try, McCain and Graham will stop them and apologize to the dems.
I think that would tell me everything I need to know about the Repubs.
Excellent. Now all we need is 51 senators, a majority of the House, and the President to repeal all of Obama’s junk, and stack the Supreme Court with a supermajority of pro-life, pro-Constitution Justices.
Oh, I forgot, we also need a pair. Not sure where that will be coming from.
I’m no authority by a long shot but I don’t believe the filibuster can be waived for one bill.
That's fine...now the House just needs to amend its rules to prohibit funding ANY Government Agency not specifically provided for by the U.S. Constitution, and then we'll see what Dem's can do with no money.
Lock and load !
Here comes the coup.
Obama and his junta took over without a shot.
Minority rights trampled.
The domestic marxists are out of control, and will not be stopped via the electoral process.
The right can either declare war on domestic marxism and wage it, or be buried.
No way a revolution will happen. A vast majority of Americans have no understanding of how precious is Liberty. They have no understanding of the evil that is government. They have been brainwashed to view the State as benevolent, albeit too large.
The most likely path we are on is one of very slow decay into a socialist hell.
Since the start of the Progressive assault on our Constitution and Capitalism, their success has been slow but relentless.
Short of a complete economic/political collapse, I see no way that government will be rolled back in any significant manner.
The GOP leaders are very weak men who deserve only our contempt. The RINOs are evil for going along with the insane left. I truly fear even with broad gains in Congress and winning the White House, not much will change.
The inertia of the arrogant elites in D.C. will continue to frustrate us. They will only make small changes in a few programs. They will not turn our Republic towards Liberty in any big way.
Even if we win in 2012, we will quickly find our GOP leaders betraying us.
It would make a great roux.......a roo roux..
Demint says filibuster still lives, but no gop amendments.
“The Rats better understand what goes around comes around.”
I think they don’t care...and that worries me. Maybe they don’t think there will be elections in 2012. Maybe it’s not in the plan.
Reid can block amendments to any bill. Levin names Rino's: Brown (MA), Burr (NC), Chamblis (GA) Cockran (GA), Collins (Maine), Graham (SC), Issacson (?), Portman (OH), Sessions (AL), Shelby (AL), Snow (Maine)
