HOUSTON -- Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Thursday that he would definitely consider an invitation to run as the eventual nominees vice president, except if the nominee turns out to be Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Cain, who rocketed to the top tier of the GOP field in several recent polls, was asked by reporters on the campaign trail for his thoughts on a hypothetical invitation to run as the eventual nominees No. 2. After offering the obligatory comment that he intends to be the nominee, Cain said, Quite frankly, based upon Gov. Perrys position on some issues, I would not be comfortable being his vice presidential nominee.
Those issues include Perrys moderate stances on immigration. As governor, Perry supported legislation offering in-state college tuition for the children of illegal immigrants, which has become a flash point in his campaign. Cain said, Issues relative to being soft on the border, issues relative to the whole, you know, tuition for children of illegal aliens. And I havent totally gone through all of his positions, but a lot of positions I have questions with.
Cain, who is black, was critical of Perry after the Washington Post reported Sunday that his family owned a Texas hunting camp once known as Niggerhead, a word that was also painted on a rock near the camps entrance. Perry has maintained that his father painted over the word as soon as he bought the property in the 1980s. And Cain subsequently said he believed Perrys explanation.
Of a vice presidential slot in general, Cain said, I would not say no to being vice president of the United States. But it would depend upon who got the nomination. I will support who gets the nomination. I know I have said that there are some people right now who I cannot support, but I wouldnt say no to it. I could say yes. But it has to be someone who I believe I can complement them in their job by being able to bring my skills to the table.
I don’t know. why would Cain, Bachmann, Santorum etc...all want to get Perry out of the race and leave Romney the frontrunner.
So, Cain wants to empower the border states to deal with immigration? Who is going to fund that approach, and how well can it work? What happens if California, for example, decides they want an open border and just stop checking cars coming into the country?
Cain doesn’t know a da*m thing about it. It’s easy to talk from a pizza place.
Perry is there in the fight.
As anybody who takes the time to read about it knows, Perry’s family did not own the hunting property with the offensive name. They leased it.
Did the WashPost report Perry’s owned it or is it this author that isn’t interested in accuracy?
Or both?
Thanks for reminding me of another plus for Perry.
He is a strong supporter of Israel.
Because he was asked about Perry specifically. He was not asked about anyone else.
So Cain would be romney’s blocking back? I think that conservatives are being ‘played’ by Cain. I like Cain and would vote for him over romney, but a sell-out to romney for the VP slot would serously backfire with conservatives. We had a rino Bush at the end of his term, a rino mclame in 2008, and now a rino romney?
WE ARE NOT AMUSED!
Thank you. How does it differ from what Gov. Perry has said about the border and immigration?
Also Texas is spending hundreds of millions of our state budget to patrol the border and put Texas Rangers on the ground.
Actually, if they move to Texas for a year and establish residency, they get in-state tuition as well. An illegal who lives in Texas has to spend 3 years in a Texas HS before getting tuition.
The ignorance continues...
Israel. Has. A. Fence.
Apparently Perry missed that part of the lesson. Technology is no substitute for a fence, it can only multiply the effectiveness of such.
And Nappy? Nappy doesn't care about effective border enforcemnt. That is a pretty poor effort at defending Perry's position, it makes him seem to not care about effective border enforcement, either.
Debating you is like arguing with a barnyard animal. YOUR OWN POSTS shoot down your position yet you refuse to even acknowledge such. My work here is done, you may have the last lame word.
I love how every last one of you ignore the 4 interviews (Hannity, Fox, The View, Beck) Cain has given since then where he says, point blank, “I do not believe Perry is a racist.”
That was a gratuitous insult, saying he wouldn’t run with Perry.
Similar to the gratuitous insult he made on the Sunday shows, jumping on Perry with no information and no real reason.
It shows me something (negative) about his character.
And, by the way, if Perry were stupid enough to offer the post to Cain, he would jump on it faster than a frog on a fly.
What in the world are you saying?
LOL
I’m criticized for POSTING stories about Perry’s issues and positions (with links and quotes).
Now I’m criticized for NOT POSTING stories about Perry and for asking questions about Herman Cain?
see post 111
So he does not believe Perry is a racist. How gracious of him.
I think Cain may be a bit of a racist himself.
And by the way, where’s the apology to Perry for his remarks on the Sunday shows? Haven’t seen that anywhere.
So why should I be concerned about Cain’s endorsement of Romney in 2008 and not about Perry’s 2008 endorsement of Pro abortion, big government Liberal Rudy Giuliani?
I guess that's why Babs Bush and Karl Rove tried soooo soooo hard to get Perry primaried out of office last year by the RINO Kay Bailey Hutchinson.
Did you even think before you posted this bullcrap? It made you look like a fool.
