We are ready to die to stop Japanese whaling: Sea Shepherd
xinhuanet ^ | 2011-10-05 | staff

The Sea Shepherd has become increasingly successful in recent years in disrupting the Japanese whaling, last summer forcing Japan's whaling fleet to head home early, and led Japanese whalers to obtain only 17 percent of their whaling quota.

Japanese government on Tuesday announced the research whaling program will go ahead later in December, and there are reports that an extra 27 million U.S. dollars worth of security will be added to the whaling fleet.

He doesn’t allow racism either, which is what you were pushing.

"He doesn’t allow racism either, which is what you were pushing"

That's hilarious. Accusing a sovereign nation of unlawfully overfishing is "racist"? I have an adopted Japanese brother, so this makes your accusation doubly funny.

Meanwhile, if you're still here, keep your comments temperate, please.

What you posted is open for all. Lying now won’t solve anything.

Keep your own comments ‘temperate’. You are the one accusing the Japanese of eating everything in the ocean. You are the one worshiping the leftist cause. You are the one who thinks whales are the same as people.

after hundreds of years of unlimited whale harvesting and almost total species devastation,

You really drank the Kool-Aid, didn't you? There are MANY whale species that are in no danger of any kind, and this "unlimited" hunting you sniffle about has rarely, if ever, had more than a few hundred large ships... WORLD WIDE. Take a look at a globe sometime. See all that blue area? That's called "ocean". Now compare that to the size of Rhode Island... which can easily house more than a thousand larger vessels.

Currently, there are fewer than 50 whaling vessels... WORLD WIDE. Exactly how can you, with a straight face, whimper about "unlimited whaling"?

Now read this:
"Norway registered an objection to the International Whaling Commission moratorium and is thus not bound by it." Nevertheless, Norway VOLUNTARILY ceased Commercial whaling ceased for a five year period "to allow a small scientific catch for gauging the stock's sustainability and resumed 1993."
"Minke whales are the only legally hunted species. Catches have fluctuated between 487 animals in 2000 to 592 in 2007. For the year 2011 the quota is set at 1286 Minke whales. The catch is made solely from the Northeast Atlantic minke whale population, which is estimated at 102,000"

Less than 1.4%, clearly allowing sustainability.
Only one species.
Actual recent catches are about half of the current quota.
You actually, with a straight face, talk about "unlimited whaling"... which has gone on for CENTURIES... and you pretend that somehow, now that it's barely a shadow of what it once was, that NOW it's somehow a danger to the species. Ludicrous.

You're basically admitting that you allow emotional overtures to do your thinking for you. How does it feel to be as easily misled as a Liberal?

Cultural imperialist! The Japanese culture is different, and their small island accounts for something like 12% of all seafood eaten in the world. Whale meat is a part of that, and has been for hundreds of years. Amazing how you think it's okay to impose your values on entire cultures... and justify it with unsubstantiated fear-mongering about denuded oceans. (Look at lobster prices: lower than they've been in years. Hint: lower supply does not equal lower prices. The oceans are doing fine, despite what the liberal lobby tells you... while they make a profit on that fakery.)

Whaling is a shadow of its former self, and less than 1% of the whale population is ever taken in a single year... and yet you call that "denuding".

There's a reason that intelligent people ignore that kind of screed. It's useless, baseless, emotion-based, and just plain silly.

I have to admit that you made my day! I've never been called a "Cultural Imperialist".

Thanks!

Meanwhile, was it OK to get the native populations in New Guinea and elsewhere to stop eating each other - or would that be further evidence of cultural imperialism?

You are clearly smarter than I am. I won’t even deign to ask you about the many species which are more plentiful today than they were 100 years ago! I wouldn’t ask you to name even one. Screw ‘em, right? Screw ‘em! Cool. We’re good. Thank goodness there’s some common sense in this forum instead of all that animal lovin’ hippie crap. Hey wait! Viking Kitty Pics comin’ up, bitch!

I bet you dollars to doughnuts you’ve never even stepped on a commercial fishing boat of any kind for more than ten minutes.

Whaling is wrong. It’s silly. I believe in giving these big animals a break. We don’t need to defend marginal Jap “Whale-burgers” just because we “generally” dislike eco-types. Screw the Japs. They take an astonishing portion of our seafood anyway. Say what you will, I encourage the harassment of whalers.

I am a hunter.

I am a field-dresser and a butcher.

I am a fisherman.

I am a “right winger...”

Whaling is wrong today, and I know a thing or two about it.

You support piracy and let your emotions rule over your thoughts.

“I bet you dollars to doughnuts you’ve never even stepped on a commercial fishing boat of any kind for more than ten minutes.”

Well obviously only professional fisherman should have any say in what kind of fish are taken.

Guess that would rule out everyone on the Sea Shepard.

I think it is funny that they get all upset about Japan taking whales but are silent about Norway doing so.

Why do you think that is?

In fact to listen to the propaganda you would think Japan was the only nation that was still whaling. It is not.

BTW there are some applications for which only whale oil will do. For all you "There is no need..." people.

So the international laws governing the use of shipping on the seas is legitimate but the international laws protecting a species isn't.

Norway thinks they aren't and they are completely right. If you don't sign a treaty, you are not bound by the terms.

I would think that would be obvious.

Why?

The “law,” or “international law” aside (if you believe in that sort of thing, which I hope you do not,) why is your opinion rational and mine irrational or “emotional?”

I also believe abortion is wrong, though it’s perfectly legal almost everywhere. Is that belief irrational as well?

Hmm?

I was not speaking of unlimited whaling TODAY, my friend. It is obviously limited today.

But what do all of your exclamations, specific facts (though inreresting), and personal insults have to do with my simple comment?

And why do you care about “international quotas” anyway? Do you respect “international agreements” on whaling? Of course not. Nor do many whalers I imagine.

Nope, my point is simply that I support the harassment of Japanese whalers because I don’t trust them, I don’t like how they and the Russians fish, I don’t like what they’ve done to our own stocks, particularly salmonid pops off the NE and Maritime provinces, and oh yeah -

I personally believe whaling is wrong, so I personally support the Sea Shepherds.

Guess that makes me an “eco-terrorist” or something...

But I believe in right and wrong more than I believe in “international agreements.”

As do you I imagine.

And I also believe that in your heart, you, like any sensible Freeper on this thread, probably agree with me about whales, about whaling, and about harassing the greedy, lawless Japs.

What they are doing is piracy. Your posts indicate up support them. You also apparently believe whales are as smart as people, an opinion not based on scientific fact.
