If McCain had won, team discussed dumping Palin (Top McCain '08 adviser Charlie Black: Not true)
Washington Times ^ | Wednesday October 5, 2011 | Bryon York

Posted on 10/05/2011 1:40:22 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

"The idea of a mentally ill vice president who suffers in complete isolation was obviously sparked by the behaviors I witnessed by Sarah Palin," Wallace tells Time. "What if somebody who was ill-equipped for the office were to ascend to the presidency or vice presidency? What would they do? How long would it take for people to figure it out? I became consumed by this question."

It's not surprising that Wallace would choose a public forum to portray Palin in such a negative light. Wallace's name was near the center of post-campaign speculation about unhappiness with Palin within the McCain team. But now, Wallace has added a new and striking element to the story: She says the McCain team discussed the question of whether, if McCain had won the 2008 election, it would have been "appropriate" for Palin to actually take office.

[...]

UPDATE: I just spoke with Charlie Black, who was McCain's top campaign adviser in the 2008 race. "I never heard any such discussions," Black told me. "There were no discussions like that with McCain, or I think I would have known about them. That doesn't mean some subset of the senior staff might have talked to each other about it."

You mean, like Joe Biden?

Hmm. I dunno, What would we do?

Let him preside over the Senate and travel abroad representing the USA in places like China and Pokkystawn?

Sounds about right. It’s 0610 here, so I am not going to try an analyze that too deeply.

Well, we’re certainly seeing the result of electing someone who is totally unqualified and possibly mentally ill, aren’t we?

Absurd.
The Vice President is a constitutionally elected office.
Once the votes are cast and the electoral college delegates are set, they cast seperate votes for President and VP. There is no possibility of a post vote dumping of a VP. Demonstrates grade school imagination.

Um. How about whether it would have been appropriate to run and win with McCain and Palin, then make a change afterward?

You know what I’d like? For Nicolle Wallace, and Steve “Scott Evil” Schmidt, and probably a few others who don’t come to mind right now, never, ever to be anywhere near power in another Republican campaign. Not just for Sarah Palin’s good, but for the good of the party in general. Bleeping idiots.

Charlie Black, a senior adviser to Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign, tells NRO that former McCain aide Nicolle Wallace is peddling “fiction, not only in her new novel, but in what she is saying about Governor Palin.”

...

Black says that’s nonsense. “Nicolle, like any author, is trying to sell books. This comment to Time, like her book [It’s Classified], is a piece of fiction. There were never any such discussions. At no high level of the campaign was there ever such talk. She’s probably doing this to sell her book.”

“Look, I was with McCain 90 percent of the time. If I wasn’t around, I knew what was happening. And nothing like this happened.” Wallace, he says, “is one of the few dissidents,” one of the “disaffected” staffers who continues to criticize Palin, and “she is inaccurate in doing so.”

Isn’t the Vice President “elected”?

I don’t think the VP can be fired.

Wallace is the jackass who allowed Katie Couric *endless* unfettered access to Gov. Palin during the campaign. I think that she was working for Obama, myself. Bob

Some say that Nicolle Wallace sleeps around. A lot.

And that she's at risk for STDs that may cause mental damage.

If McCain had won it’s obvious that it would have been in large measure due to Palin’s influence. McCain’s people failed in epic fashion handling her wonderful story, ergo they must spend a good measure of the rest of their lives ducking and covering. Palin did what she was told for the most part, and that is why her message was lost. The few times she tried to break out she connected wonderfully. This time it’s her ballgame, and I suspect she won’t be afraid to throw fastballs up around Obama’s chin.

The only reason McCain did as well as he did was because of Palin. That story about someone associated with Palin calling states to find out about filing deadlines must have spooked somebody.

Damn right. I went to the county courthouse and became a deputy voter registrar. The I signed up people at work to vote and knocked on neighbor's doors. With only McCain, I would have gone to the polls just before closing on election day.

"What if somebody who was ill-equipped for the office were to
ascend to the presidency or vice presidency?"

I heard Cheney say that when *they* went to Sheets Byrd on
9/11/2001, he declined on being (#3) in the emergency succession
preparations, and went home [to bed].

At least he was aware of some of his limitations...
