Fort Lauderdale to allow guns – but no other weapons – at parades

FORT LAUDERDALE— If you're headed to the St. Patrick's Day parade downtown next spring, leave your knives at home. But it soon will be OK if you pack a gun.

City commissioners began loosening Fort Lauderdale's long-standing ban on weapons at parades and other public events Tuesday. The change comes in response to a new state law that imposes fines on public officials – and could even oust them from office – if they enforce tougher gun laws than those spelled out in state statute.

Hmmm... The Second Amendment addresses "arms". It does not specify "firearms".

I suppose the argument could be made that it would be easier to get away with stabbing someone in a parade crowd -- as opposed to shooting them. However, I don't think this discrimination will stand up to Constitutional scrutiny...

LULAC screams RACISM. Obvious disparate impact on Mexicans who are culturally more likely to bring a knife to a gun fight that are anglos.

“arms” is “arms”, meaning what you can carry.
The same non-prohibition should apply to swords as well.

seems like more reporter hissy fits.

this law seems so obscure I bet it was basicly ignored in the first place. If anything it was used by the police to harrass.

The article does not detail the kinds of knives that are banned. ALL KNIVES? Or only fixed blades?

If anyone ever attacks you with a raspberry, just pull the lever and the 16-ton weight will fall on top of him.
