McCain lashes out at Holder over Fast and Furious memos
The Hill ^ | 10/04/11 | Ariel Katz

Top Republicans blasted Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday after reports surfaced that he might have known about the controversial “Fast and Furious” gun-tracking operation earlier than he previously claimed.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) tweeted, “What part of Q, ‘When did you first know about the program known as Fast and Furious?’ didn't AG Holder understand?”

McCain has asked for a Senate hearing into the operation.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), who is conducting the inquiry as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, retweeted McCain's Twitter post, along with links to news reports. Issa has used Twitter extensively to push for transparency during his committee’s ongoing investigation into the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives operation that might have led to the death of a Border Patrol agent.

Two other Arizona Republicans, Reps. Ben Quayle and Trent Franks, also took interest in the story, with Franks tweeting a link to a conservative blog post about Holder.

The gun-running operation took place in the Southwest, and has consequentially been a central issue for congressmen from that region.

You have a good point there. The talking heads will listen to the old gasbag and this story may finally get some traction in the MSM.

McCain was so bad that he made Dole look like an authentic opponent to Clinton during the Clinton re-election campaign.

He "lashed out" in a tweet. What's not to be cynical about?

When he gets his pug-ugly face in a television camera and says he's going to demand hearings to find out what's going on, I might take him a bit more seriously.

With the GOP in the minority in the Senate, good luck with that. The Senate won't touch it unntil Holder is impeached. That's why Senator Grassley from Iowa is sitting in on Issa's House hearings.

OK, if he’d be willing to sit in on Issa’s hearings with Sen. Grassley that would be a major indication that he’s taking things seriously.

But a tweet? Gimmee a break.

When do the Senate hearings begin?

As soon as the committee chairman, Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT), gets around to it.

In other words, the Senate will sit on its hands until after January, 2013.

Leahy is why the committee's rnking member, Senator Grassley (R-IA), is participating in Issa's probe.

Just because she wasn’t doesn’t mean it COULDN’T have been done (or couldn’t still be done considering you’d be possibly charging her with murder - no statute of limitations).

Got it, thanks... It’s not something I’ve looked into very much. Must rectify that. Also, regarding a statute of limitations I’m sure Issa will be trying for something a little more substantive than perjury charges. The perjury just lends more credibility to the call for an independent prosecutor.

One more question; couldn’t Obama put him on administrative leave or something and appoint a prosecutor? Someone on another thread was mentioning that Obama could do something of the sort. The reason I ask is that I’m wondering if Obama is going to try to pin all of it on Holder assuming that Holder will keep his mouth shut?

Thanks again.

Was Janet Reno ever held responsible for Ruby Ridge or Waco?

Ruby Ridge occurred during the GHWB administration. I think William Barr was the AG at the time.

But nobody was held responsile ffor that travesty, either.

You’re right.

AG’s never are held accountable, are they?

As far as Obama trying to fire Holder or otherwise striip him of power in order to allow an indictment against him for crimes associated with Fast And Furious, remember that Holder has full access to all the FBI files on Obama and all his Commie Cronies. Holder has the goods on Obama in spades. Why do you think that Presidents traditionally appoint their best friends to be Attorney General?

Obama's fingerprints are all over this. He needs Holder to stay put and shut up. The pardons will start to issue around January 19, 2013.

McCain’s asking for Senate hearings because, well, when have Senate hearings ever accomplished anything of substance?

Actually yes, John Mitchell, Nixon’s AG was charged with some crime regaining campaign funds I believe.

Anyone think Holder has iron clad protection here because of his knowledge of the IWON’s potential problems. Right now, it is the only thing keeping him out of jail IMO.

>This story has been running for over a year and only now it is getting legs.<

I think that is fine. If it had been getting attention thsi whole time, people would be sick of it. As it is this may be pre-mature. Now they will have to move against Holder to keep it fresh.

>Look for Holder to stonewall until the last days of Obama’s presidency. Then Obama will grant him an unconditional pardon.<

Won’t happen. There is no way that they will be able to dog and pony it that long.
