Herman Cain leaving the campaign trail: Why now?

Herman Cain leaving the campaign trail: Why now?

Herman Cain is surging in popularity in a number of polls. So why is Herman Cain putting his campaign on hold for the next month?

The Hermantor Experience is, by almost any measure, the hottest thing going in the GOP presidential primary (not named Chris Christie).

< snip>

But Cain seems destined to squander it. And here’s why.

As NBC’s thoughtful First Read points out this morning, Cain's promoting a book - and appears to be taking himself off the campaign trail for almost a month.

Cain won’t be back in the key state of Iowa until November. With all of the jiggering of the Republican primary calendar, that means he’ll have six weeks (at best) to pound the trail before the Iowa caucuses in early January.

Perhaps equally telling, Cain's well-regarded communications director and her deputy are both leaving the campaign, with the director headed to… run press operations for Louisiana Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne in a tough primary election. That’s not exactly a vote of confidence in Cain’s presidential prospects.

< snip>

When you peel off the campaign trail for four weeks in the heat of the fight, it raises questions about just what the heck a candidate is doing in the race anyway. ....

< snip>

When you take yourself off the campaign trail just to flog a book, it raises the question: Why are you still around, Herman Cain? And what’s the real motive behind this run?

Herman Cain has said that he would not support Rick Perry even in the general election ....... even against Obama.

The article you link doesn't have Cain saying that. The quote is:

"Today, I could not support Rick Perry as the nominee for a host of reasons,"

Seems pretty clear that he was saying he could not support Perry "today" based on his current positions, and was waiting for Perry to either clarify or change those positions - including tuition breaks for the children of illegal aliens.

"No, Cain isn't running. He is not a threat to Perry. Never!"

Here’s his schedule for the next month:

Yeah. He’s really taking time off.

All this crap came from one stupid blogger’s projection. Now people are running with that rumor.

The writer is just trying to plant the notion that Cain is leaving and doesn’t stand a chance.

I’ve been watching the alinskyites for a while now and recognize their methods.

Polbius is trying to sell everyone on this establishment republican from Texas. Posting everything and anything negative he can about real outsider republicans like Cain and SP.

He probably works for the sinking Perry campaign.

I'm not sure that Perry can recover from the gang-mugging he has undergone.

Perry's problem is his miserable debate performances. Period. Yes, he got ganged up on when he was far ahead in the polls, but he would have weathered the storm if he didn't come off like an inarticulate fool when he had the chance to showcase himself - particularly in the third debate where he nearly imploded.

Not saying Perry can't recover, he can - but he will need to do a lot better and refrain from shooting himself in the foot with incredibly destructive comments such as his "heartless" flub.

As to Cain, I am not sold on him - but I doubt he is "leaving the campaign train". His book is probably part of his campaign and he is using it to get his ideas out.

I’m tempted to post Cain’s schedule as it’s own thread.

These damn lies really cheese me off.

Ridiculous is right.

Cain just brought in a top tier communications director JD Gordon (Pentagon/Rumsfeld spokesman) - he started today.

He’s doing well in the polls, beating Romney is most of them.

His book is part of getting his name out - it’s called “This is Herman Cain - My Journey to the White House”.

His support for Romney was in 2008 when most of FR supported Romney because was better than McCain. He has been critical of Romney in regards to Romneycare both recently and in 2007.

And no, Herman would never, NEVER vote for Obama. Insane.

“I’ve been watching the alinskyites for a while now and recognize their methods.”

Look, there are a lot of people who make a lot of money by hiring illegals and they want Perry. They don’t have to follow the same kind of regulations since the illegals won’t take them to task for breaking the labor laws.

Is anyone else getting flashbacks from the Romney/Huckabee crap that was pulled against Thompson in late 2007 via Politico? I’m having deja vu... SO sad because THIS is exactly how we ended up with McCain - taking things JOURNALISTS are writing about and assuming they must be true...

Did we learn NOTHING from 2007/2008?

Issues people... stick to issues! Stop with the BS and please, for God’s sake, stop listening to everything the media says! ESPECIALLY stop listening to what the media is saying - why is ANYONE all of a sudden believing the same people who up until this campaign season we wouldn’t have taken advice or insight from without a grain of salt?

Better than another “moderate” from New Jersey or Mass. Another McCain who spouts conservative values then jumps right in with the liberal tax and spend group as soon as he’s re-elected.

I think Perry’s record is conservative overall. I think Christie and Romney will finish off this country.

I think the point is that if you look at where he is going for the next month...he is going nowhere near a early primary state, let alone to IA which probably will be moved up to Jan 2. I saw this morning that he was scheduling a book tour but didn’t have any confirmation other than left wing media but digging through some things Cain is indeed going on a book tour

Agreed. CSM is notoriously liberal and we all knew that when Cain gained stature the target would be on him.

His book tour is the perfect campaign platform and it defies conventional wisdom. He’s not a politician, now, is he? :-)

Iowa is not that important.

The polls are fairly consistent.

Head to head - Romney does best against Obama, Paul typically 2nd best, there’s a large group below those 2 that perform similarly, and sometimes Gingrich is below the large group, but typically not.

Romney has pretty high favorabilities in the polls, which gives him that advantage. Ron Paul is very strong with Independents, especially young male independents.

I say, who is “David Grant”, who wrote this journalistic piece, what is his PR/lobbying background, what is his connections, what is his political leanings, and what is his motivation in writing it and analyzing it in this vein? I do tend to think Herman Cain is certainly no idiot, and most likely will have the last laugh on this. This man knows how to run an operation and make solid, tactical decisions, I would suspect that it is a classic Sun Tzu movement, in fact if I were running, it is something I might consider doing right about now...doing the campaign book thing, and then returning to full time campaigning. In fact, it could be a good revenue generator and he also meets the public in droves this way, in a sense, it is STILL CAMPAIGNING only changing the warfare and psych parameters externally. Brilliant. I think it freaks them out. Let them think what they want to think. Just watch. We will just have to wait and see who has the last laugh.

What a ridiculous article and assumption. The book he is promoting is a campaign book — this will be “part” of the campaign.

Yes, of course. If the Battle is at Gettysburg, you should be spending your time conducting your campaign in New York.
