Dick Durbin urges customers to leave Bank of America
By: Seung Min Kim October 3, 2011 04:26 PM EDT
Angry about Bank of Americas new $5 monthly fee for using your debit card?
Dick Durbin has some advice for you: Take your money elsewhere.
Bank of America customers, vote with your feet, the Senate majority whip said in a floor speech Monday. Get the heck out of that bank. Find yourself a bank or credit union that wont gouge you for $5 a month and still will give you a debit card that you can use every single day.
What Bank of America has done is an outrage, he added.
Bank of America announced last week that it will soon start charging most of its customers $5 per month for using their debit card a move intended to recoup the revenue that the bank will lose under new federal regulations that went into effect Oct. 1. Those rules, authored by Durbin, capped the amount of swipe fees what banks can charge retailers for processing debit cards.
Other banks are likely to follow Bank of Americas lead, which means it would be difficult for customers to merely switch banks.
Over the last few days, critics of the Durbin amendment blamed the Illinois Democrat for the debit fee hike. The Chicago Tribune, in an Oct. 1 editorial, dubbed the new charge the Durbin Fee and blasted the senator for pushing the swipe fee change.

US Congressman campaigning against US businesses.
They aren't even pretending any more.
Let me guess, Durbin didn’t get enough donations from them (ie, they didn’t pay their government protection money)?
HOW DARE HE?!!!!
Hell no, people would rather whine about the charge.
Durbin is just a stupid crook. That’s why when the “unintended consequences” of his stupid corrupt actions comes back and bites him on the ass, he throws a temper tantrum.
He wants them to pay their Dick Durban fee at a different bank?
Guess he is shorting the stock.
Durbin thinks the debit card system doesn’t cost anything to run.
He also must think BoA doesn’t employ very many people, because he seems to want it to go bankrupt.
Which, looking at stock, it may very well...
Bank of America doesn’t create jobs! Dickie Durbin, Obama and the Federal government creates jobs . . . . / sarc
Typical.
Create a problem then attack the problem in the role of hero.
Moron...............I would recommend anyone living in ILLINOIS take their money and leave the state. Having an idiot like Durbin representing you is reason enough to leave that sorry state. BOA’s website has been down all day and from the way the stock of BOA reacted today, it is obvious a run on their deposits is under way.
Durbin is yelling “fir”e in a movie theater, “I have a bomb on an airplane” and any other incendiary comment you can think of. The Democrats are proving more and more every day they have no idea how the economy works, and that when gov’t intervenes in free markets, they only cause problems. Durbin’s amendment to the Dodd-Frank fiasco is the reason banks are addding these fees. Durbin sold out to the big retailers with his restriction on debit card fees and the banks are responding accordingly.
While I don’t care for Bank of America, Little Dick’s grandstanding just makes me want to open an account with them.
Been a long time BOA’er and they’ve worked out very well for me.
Was a little peeved about the new card fee but I also understood very well that it was not all BOA’s doing.
Now, with this certified moron coming out like this.....there’s no way in Hell I’ve leave them. Rotten POS.
Anything that puts heat on Congress is good, as far as I'm concerned.
hmmmmm. No thanks Durbin...slimeball socialist.
He’s covering his ass for the unintended consequences of Dodd-Frank which he supported to the hilt. And there are more unintended consequences on the way.....
So. Dick is urging BOA customers to leave over the Durbin fee?
Oh, the huge manatee.
