Killing of U.S.-born terrorist raises questions

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama steered the nation's war machine into uncharted territory Friday when a U.S. drone attacked a convoy in Yemen and killed two American citizens who had become central figures in al-Qaida.
It was believed to be the first instance in which a U.S. citizen was tracked and executed based on secret intelligence and the president's say-so. And it raised major questions about the limitations of presidential power.

"This court recognizes the somewhat unsettling nature of its conclusion -- that there are circumstances in which the executive's unilateral decision to kill a U.S. citizen overseas is 'constitutionally committed to the political branches' and judicially unreviewable," Bates wrote. "But this case squarely presents such a circumstance."

Whatever happened to “WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE?”
I bet the families of the Ft. Hood massacre are happy.
Of course, he was an anchor baby, no?
I am dense and to me it doesn't add up.
At the very least the Justice Dept should have gotten an indictment months ago.
I believe Awlaki had dual citizenship. If he’s not a 100% American, then he’s not American. Dual citizenship is crap; I don’t care who it is. I’m very pro-Israel, but even they need to decide if they’re Israelis or Americans. Awlaki was a Yemeni terrorist. Period. He’s dead. Good.
There were also a bunch of "Wanted Dead or Alive" signs for Bonnie and Clyde.
Where were the "Wanted Dead or Alive" signs for the terrorist? Or, does the POTUS have to rule on each and every one these days?
Exactly...
I wonder if the NYTimes pointed that out.
Obama didn't want to capture him. Then he might have to take him to Gitmo.
I thought this guy was on our side..He sounds like Code Pink and the other moronic morons out there..I say kill all the murdering fools..Ron Paul the terrorist lover..
Bears repeating. I'm shocked at all the folks who think any US Citizen being deemed a target for killing by a President is just dandy. If a previous President had thought of this, he could have simply declared Randy Weaver an "enemy of the state" and then strafed his house from the air.
It could easily be any one of us next time.
Do you remember the uproar when some state officials told officers to be on the lookout for potential domestic “terrorists” based on bumper stickers, such as pro-life bumper stickers? Liberals are trying to shut conservatives up, and I’m sure they would love to be able to lock us up. The only thing stopping them is the protection we have under our Constitution, and that protection has to apply to all American citizens.
Are you saying it’s OK for the president to have someone killed just because they are not on US soil? We have trials for the worst, most violent people in the US, and that is to stop us from becoming a police state. The Soviet Union was the country where the government could declare someone to be an enemy of the state with no proof nor trial and just execute him. Is that what we want to become?
As for this being war, war is what politicians always use as an excuse to suspend our rights and curtail our freedom. What is a war on terror anyway? It’s not like a war on a country. Terror is a tactic, so when does “terror” sit down and sign surrender papers? Saying we are in a war on terror means we will be in a state of perpetual war, because terror will always be with us. If laws can be suspended during war, then look for further erosion of our rights and liberties.
If I were made Queen (so, you see I am a Dudette and not a Dude), I would go for the home run. I would ban the Islamic religion in the US and deport all Muslims. Might as well do something with all that power that would really make us safer.
I’m sure they are. I am, too, that this guy is dead. What I am not happy about is having a president that can make himself judge and executioner. We don’t need no stinkin’ laws.
Kill more islamists.
Even Bin Laden was indicted.
The old saying is, you can indict a ham sandwich.
You forget that, to the Left, as Rush has pointed out on many occasions, WE are more feared and hated as a danger to this country than any muslim terrorist.
How are we going to stop them from going after the really big threats instead of just extreme muslim terrorists?
You know, I had not thought about that. I wonder how that came about in the old West? That is really interesting. They had lynch mobs, too, but it would seem that there may have not been much concern about those things then. I wonder when all that changed?
It raised one question for me too, who’s next? Beck, limbaugh, hannity or anyone that gets in his way?
Nothing new. Eric Holder was working for Janet Reno the last time.
Sometimes an American President needs to kill American citizens without trials.
