Perry apologizes for 'heartless' comment on immigration question (text and Video)

Rick Perry said Wednesday that he was sorry for saying at last week's Republican debate that those opposed to providing an in-state tuition break to the children of illegal immigrants "did not have a heart."

“I was probably a bit over-passionate by using that word and it was inappropriate,” Perry said in a interview with Newsmax. “In Texas in 2001 we had 181 members of the legislature — only four voted against this piece of legislation — because it wasn’t about immigration it was about education.”

But Perry stood by his argument that building a fence along the entire Mexican border was unwise. The Texas governor said that the fence would likely be expensive, ineffective and violate the property rights of those who owned land on the border.

“In the metropolitan areas where the fencing actually can play a positive role, absolutely,” he said. “But you have to have boots on the ground … having an obstacle without observation is no obstacle at all. So just the idea of building a fence and saying, ‘That will take care of it, let’s just build a fence,’ has never worked in the history of mankind.”

Can you just tell me who your hundred percenter is? And please name someone already in the race. Not tweeters or gamers throwing hints from the Reagan library. Name a declared candidate who REALLY has a shot.

ballots will be printed out and mailed to the military in as little as 3 weeks.

With Romney now apparently in the lead, with a few weeks to go... I say it’s panic time.

But you keep living in your dream world where Santorum or whoever zooms up from 1% to upset Romney, with no cash no less!

*sigh*

He still believes what he said, he just doesn't like that it's hurt his poll numbers.

The one thing you don't want to see in a politician, it really sours the image.

When is Perry going to apologize for what he said in the earlier debate, i.e., insinuating that if you are against in-state tuition for illegals you are some sort of racist or bigot?

“In the state of Texas, if you've been in the state of Texas for three years, if you're working towards your college degree, and if you are working and pursuing citizenship in the state of Texas, you pay in-state tuition there,” said Perry.

“And the bottom line is, it doesn't make any difference what the sound of your last name is. That is the American way,” said Perry. “No matter how you got into that state, from the standpoint of your parents brought you there or what have you. And that's what we've done in the state of Texas. And I'm proud that we are having those individuals be contributing members of our society rather than telling them, you go be on the government dole.”

Thanks for doing your part to give us a pro abortion nominee!

And don't forget that the northeastern liberal Romney is also a gun-grabber.

And who has ever proposed fences alone for border security? No one. It's just one more straw man...

Good observation, and too true.

Wow! This was a great interview. I recommend that everyone watch the entire segment (of course I know the Perry haters won’t). But it’s amazing how well he does when presented with real, substantial questions not “gotcha questions” and harrassment.

Many topics covered here and he looked and sounded GREAT!

What makes you think they aren’t paying tuition?

My brain and Perry's words.

Perry always does great in interviews and giving speeches, he’s just not good at debates (especially when being attacked by 7 others and 2 moderators at once)

That's the M.O. of the game. Focus in on a hot and singular event or issue and ignore all else.

So, somewhere in the public consciousness Perry a far right candidate that actually has a tough stance on the border, is big time second amendment, pro life, pro states rights, pro death penalty, has a pro growth low tax stance, opposes any sort of national health care and is fighting it, supports the troops and wouldn't jump on the antiwar bandwagon in 2005-2010 when it was politically beneficial... is made out as a RINO by those like Christy and Romney and their supporters who I doubt even know anything about this governor other than the little snippets in the news or the short little talking points that drive their feelings. This is what you call the pot calling the kettle black, or ironic, Perry is probably one of the most politically right of the candidates on that stage in economic, social and security matters.

Did you know Obama eventually sent troops to Afghanistan at the request of the Army and McCrystal? Maybe they can spin Obama to be a centrist and pro defense? Why not, on this singular issue if you look at it a certain way you can make that argument, sort of like trying to portray Perry as a RINO or somehow being supportive of illegal immigration. Of course everywhere else Obama trends as leftists with a peculiar mix of American 60s-70s liberalism and a flavor of Afrocentric culture (preacher style speeches, pimp limp, vernacular used). People see what they want too and they use this form of zooming in and out on the issues to rationalize their feelings.

From what I have read its not free tuition. Its the instate tuition rate that was voted on.

Do you know what you're talking about? or do you just babel together some crap all the time?

Perry put the State Guard on the border.

He pressures the fed to do more.

He pushes against sanctuary cities as he did with Houston.

He has illegals that commit crimes handed over from DPS to ICE.

Do you want links to state web sites and local papers that report such? You have no clue- “Mr. Open Borders” is a self admission of ignorance.

you keep plugging your man after his illegal comments then fine but attacking others and saying crap like planned parenthood welcomes you to another poster is hardly helping to get people on your side or people to support his pro immigration stance

find it amazing how the few Perry supporters which are left still attack posters by saying they’re for Romney.

well I know I’m not for either and Perry lost my vote and Romney never had my vote.

Crying for Perry like what is going on is pathetic, the man screwed up and proved he is not ready for prime time and find out that many outside of TX does not go along with illegals taking jobs, education , health care etc plus they broke the frigging law and jump the legal immigrants.

Romney is no better either and I hope it is neither of these two clowns, shame some can’t see that and instead harp on about your must be a Romney voter ARF

Can't win on substance so you question a poster's manhood?

This shows why Daschle told Obama to run because he had no record.

Conservative candidates are beloved inversely proportional to the size and depth of their public records.

Rhetoric can be pure. Records never are.

However attractive the TX record, particularly in contrast to Romney, I don't feel Perry or his campaign are full committed to the race.

I wish someone else would join the race but I can't blame anyone for thinking, "thanks but no thanks."

The field has no committed conservative with a public record of executive experience. How does this happen?

Yeah, I'm sorry too, Perry . . . but Hermie Cain sends you his thanks . . . big time.
