Rick Perry an immigration radical? Hardly

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is a radical who encourages illegal immigration.

Really?

That incendiary line of attack in the free-for-all among Republican presidential hopefuls begs for a deep breath and a dose of rational reflection.

Since 2001, Texas has allowed students to qualify for in-state college tuition if they've lived in the state for three years leading to high school graduation, completed their studies for a diploma or a GED, and enrolled at a public higher education institution.

Citizens, legal residents and other immigrants can get lower rates under the law. Students who meet the criteria but aren't U.S. citizens yet must file a statement that they intend to seek legal status.

The policy, which won widespread support in the Legislature before getting Perry's signature, has moral, practical and financial dimensions.

Support has come from the influential Texas Association of Business and chambers of commerce, as well as educators, the Texas Catholic Conference and civil libertarians.

In 2009, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott upheld the law. This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court also rejected a challenge to a similar law in California.

Well that is big talk about Texas seceding, and I am sympathetic, but it accomplishes nothing. There is no move afoot to do any such thing. So it may make you feel good to spout off, but it doesn’t advance our cause one iota.

Yes and it also transforms the US into a low wage country. What we are witnessing is a demographic catastrophe of historical proportions. Is our political class on both sides silent on the issue? Yes ... because they are complicit.

It's the same exact Bush crowd all over again...

If Perry ever gets elected, watch for the, "A day in the life of Perry" threads, were only approved comments are tolerated.

This is not subsidized by the government nor is it subsidized by the college, so in effect, Christie wasn’t referring to this program, in a political sense. Words mean everything in a contract and in politics.

In fact, I am surprised there is not an uproar that this is really a money-making venture for state colleges and universities. (See below.) At least knowing they make all the money they do from this program should mean that it should keep the costs down for American students.

Study: In-state tuition for RI non-citizens would raise revenue

September 26th, 2011 at 4:44 pm by Ted Nesi under Nesi’s Notes

Allowing undocumented immigrants to get in-state tuition at Rhode Island’s public colleges would increase non-citizen enrollment by 31% and actually make money for the schools, according to a comprehensive recent study of the issue.

The study, conducted by the nonpartisan Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University, examines what may happen if the Board of Governors of Higher Education approves the policy change at its meeting tonight. The change would take effect in the fall of 2012 if it gets approved.

(snip)

More surprisingly, the institution said those benefits would come at no cost to Rhode Island taxpayers, based on an analysis of nine previous studies on the effects of in-state tuition around the country.

In fact, the study said granting non-citizens in-state tuition would generate approximately $162,000 in additional revenue for public colleges and universities each year. That estimate does not account for the economic benefits of the students’ increased earnings potential or the income tax revenue they would generate, said Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco, director of the institute.

The study also played down a major criticism of the proposed change – that non-citizens would take admissions spots from citizens. Administrators told researchers that the only instance in which non-citizens could displace citizen applicants is in highly competitive programs, like nursing.

But, in terms of general admission to these institutions, “there is no tweaking of admissions seats, so you won’t see anybody denied admission because of any increase in non-citizens being enrolled at these institutions,” Mehlman-Orozco said.

(snip)

Board of Governors spokesman Michael Trainor agreed, adding that because applicants are admitted based on whether they meet certain minimum qualifications, “if a citizen student doesn’t get in, it’s because of his or her own record.”

Thirteen states have passed laws allowing undocumented students to receive in-state tuition since 2001, including Texas and Connecticut, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures; one – Wisconsin – revoked it this year. But Rhode Island would be the first to implement the change through policy rather than legislation.

I was all for Perry, defended him against Michele’s gardasil attacks but now I see his true colors. He’s just another Dubya/Huckabee.

Texas under Perry was the FIRST state to pass this lunatic policy, which only encourages more illegals to pour in.

The feds wont send them back and the States cannot do so. Now what do you do?

Lock them up for 24 hrs every time they come in contact with law enforcement. Even if it’s just a routine traffic stop.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is owned by the McClatchy Company, an ultra-liberal organization and I would surmise that its editorials have little credibility on America's premiere Conservative site.

The sole reason I pinged Jim Robinson is to make sure my evaluation of McClatchy is correct. Since he's in Fresno, he's familiar The Fresno Bee and its sister papers in California. If I've overstated the editorial liberal bias of McClatchy and its chain of newspapers, I'll gladly and humbly issue a retraction.

(I do recall that when it was locally owned by Amon Carter, the Star-Telegram was an unbiased journal of both news and opinion. When I read it nowadays, that once fine newspaper pushes the agenda of the left. I attribute that to the McClatchy Company.

No its not a two way street. illegal aliens lie. Illegal aliens violate the law.

Here in So Cal they keep doing things like refusing to impound cars driven by drunk Hispanics with no license or insurance because activists have complained "it causes undue hardship on the Hispanic communities and is racial profiling"...

driving while white on the other hand will get your car impounded AND the book thrown at you...they have to pay for all those illegals somehow...

It is immoral to punish the children for the sins of the parent.

It would be even worse to not give a college education to the children of parents that didn’t bring their children here illegally. How about a free education to every child still in Mexico? Once the child turns 18 we can punish them for the crime of choosing to stay here illegally.
