Texas Gov. Rick Perry is a radical who encourages illegal immigration.
Really?
That incendiary line of attack in the free-for-all among Republican presidential hopefuls begs for a deep breath and a dose of rational reflection.
Since 2001, Texas has allowed students to qualify for in-state college tuition if they've lived in the state for three years leading to high school graduation, completed their studies for a diploma or a GED, and enrolled at a public higher education institution.
Citizens, legal residents and other immigrants can get lower rates under the law. Students who meet the criteria but aren't U.S. citizens yet must file a statement that they intend to seek legal status.
The policy, which won widespread support in the Legislature before getting Perry's signature, has moral, practical and financial dimensions.
Support has come from the influential Texas Association of Business and chambers of commerce, as well as educators, the Texas Catholic Conference and civil libertarians.
In 2009, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott upheld the law. This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court also rejected a challenge to a similar law in California.

a deep breath of what, laughing gas?
I have 5 who are career Army...all of them would hot foot it back to Texas. In the fall, all but one of them will be back in the hell hole of Afghanistan. I have two who are MI and one is an Army Major.
“Be interesting to know how many illegals pursuing higher education will major in Hispanic/Ethnic Studies to become the next crop of street marching recoquista radicals? “
well, they’re not going to college to get jobs because we’re supposed to ummm punish employers for hiring illegals, right???

Excellent. Glad to hear he agrees with Rick Perry.
"They [the children of illegals] are being educated, right up to and through high school.Where did it come to pass that if you're here illegally, you have a right to a college education, let alone the right to have it subsidized, when all Americans do NOT have their college educations subsidized?
I mean, this is perverse, to be honest with you.
And it is also the position of the Bush family. And I think if I'm wrong, I stand corrected it's the position of some of our "inside-the-beltway" publications.
But it is not the position of the American people, who have to pay this bill, endlessly."
Texans are either too dumb or too arrogant to see what has happened to California and not recognize the danger.
What does that leave? Taxpayer funded political activism...
The illegals who brought children into this country are one thing, but let’s not put their children in the same category. It was their parents who broke the law, not them. It is immoral to punish the children for the sins of the parent. To deny them instate college tuition rates when students from other states can qualify for instate rates after a one year residency is outrageous.
As a Californian since 1956 I got to witness the destruction...
Its worse than that.. Perry does not know illegal aliens........ ARE ILLEGAL...
could explain why Perry didn’t know Al Gorp was a complete moron and campaigned for him..
Its hard to remove the democrat from the democrat while act like a republican..
Look what this process did to Ron Paul.. it made him crazy..
Myth Romney became political fiction..
Since American citizens will be bumped from those seats...I'll remain the heartless bastard I was told I was by Ricardo Perry...so heartless he won't get a dime or a vote from me...
Interesting numbers in the article.
Texas educates or executes illegal children brought into Texas — depends on their path.
While the Mexican (brought into the U.S. at 5-years-old) lived on death row for 2 decades (being supported by taxpayers for his room and board) others have taken another path and are paying their way to be educated (the vast majority of those who qualify, attend community colleges).
The only other chink in his armor is his support for a law he signed which allowed for non-citizen children domiciled in Texas without immigration documentation to be considered Texas residents for the purposes of paying college tuition. From the boos in the crowds it was apparent that most Republicans nation-wide do not support this. Nonetheless, Perry explains very clearly and carefully why he signed what was a veto proof bill passed with four no votes out of 183 Texas legislators, with Republicans in firm control of both chambers.
But heres what Yankees like Michelle Bachmann, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum dont get. Texas is not the only state that has done this. New Mexico and California have as well. Not surprisingly, Arizona is the only state with an actual border with Mexico that hasnt. In addition to Arizona, only three other states prohibit in-state tuition for children with undocumented immigration status. However, in addition to Texas, New Mexico, and California, eight other states specifically allow it. These include Kansas (passed with a Republican supermajority in both houses), Nebraska (non-partisan, but with a supermajority of members who were otherwise Republicans), and Utah (again, with a dual supermajority of Republicans), New York (split control), Oklahoma (Republican House and even split in the Senate), as well as Illinois, Washington, and Wisconsin (Democratic simple majority in both houses).
Now you may be thinking to yourself, if only four states have prohibited state universities from considering undocumented students as residents, and eight have specifically permitted it, what about the other thirty-eight? They have not legislated on the matter at all. What is not prohibited is allowed.
“To deny them instate college tuition rates when students from other states can qualify for instate rates after a one year residency is outrageous.”
You make it sound like we’re trying to starve them to death.
Hey ari, you got photo ID up there in New York yet? Perry passed it in Texas. Photo ID, you know, the thing that keeps illegals from voting. You got it there yet?
Texas Gov. Rick Perry is a radical who encourages illegal immigration.”
No. Perry is an immigration RINO, like GW Bush and others in the GOP, he doesnt ‘encourage’ it, but will not make hard choices to shut it down.
“Since 2001, Texas has allowed students to qualify for in-state college tuition if they’ve lived in the state for three years” ...
It’s a mistaken law and it would be popular to overturn it, but you have the alliance of business and left-wing and ethnic special interestes ....
“... has come from the influential Texas Association of Business and chambers of commerce, as well as educators, the Texas Catholic Conference and civil libertarians”
- TAB/Chamber of Commerce = cheap-labor lobby
- ‘educators’ = Educrat unions seeking to keep illegal immigrant captive student audience
- Catholic Bishops = representing the illegal aliens in their pews
- civil libertarians = open borders ACLU types
So basically an alliance of open borders folks like the unpopular and bad policy.
Big deal. It is still wrong.
No its not a two way street. illegal aliens lie. Illegal aliens violate the law. These are very simple concepts that supporters of in state tuition for illegal aliens do not seem to understand. If illegal aliens are willing to violate numerous other federal and state laws why in the hell would they suddenly want to be truthful on a college affidavit that nobody cares is even valid?
Illegal aliens don’t care about legally entering the US why would they care about entering college legally?
Methinks the above is why the Obama Regime is not lifting a finger to fulfill the Federal Government's responsibility in sealing the border with boots on the ground. All this stuff that Governor Perry is being blamed for is the result of the Obama Regime's failure to fulfill their obligation.zzzzzzzzz,p. Start pointing the finger at the right guy: Barack Obama.
Let’s see some heart extended to American citizens for a change! I was all for Perry but his stance on illegal aliens and especially his horrible defense of the tuition subsidy for illegal aliens program hurt him.
By the way, let’s make it clear to the media that it wasn’t Perry’s debate performance that hurt him, it was his pro-illegal alien stand and especially his attack on his own “heartless” base. This sounds like the failed “compassionate conservatism” of Bush and that is NOT what we want.
