Rick Perry an immigration radical? Hardly

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is a radical who encourages illegal immigration.

Really?

That incendiary line of attack in the free-for-all among Republican presidential hopefuls begs for a deep breath and a dose of rational reflection.

Since 2001, Texas has allowed students to qualify for in-state college tuition if they've lived in the state for three years leading to high school graduation, completed their studies for a diploma or a GED, and enrolled at a public higher education institution.

Citizens, legal residents and other immigrants can get lower rates under the law. Students who meet the criteria but aren't U.S. citizens yet must file a statement that they intend to seek legal status.

The policy, which won widespread support in the Legislature before getting Perry's signature, has moral, practical and financial dimensions.

Support has come from the influential Texas Association of Business and chambers of commerce, as well as educators, the Texas Catholic Conference and civil libertarians.

In 2009, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott upheld the law. This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court also rejected a challenge to a similar law in California.

The immigrants brought here by their parents are paying a range of $20,000 to $80,000 for these “handouts”.

I wonder how we can get the welfare and food stamp crowd to pay the same for their handouts? That would be so cool. They could pay for their own program.

Hey, you could easily reinstitute slavery and peonage too.

How little you know. I suggest you take a look at your own laws on residency, what it takes to qualify, and how the universities judge it for purposes of obtaining instate tuition.

The conditions for illegal aliens are less rigorous than for OTHER AMERICANS.

BTW, you Texans can LOSE instate tuition for as little as failing to pay a nonreturned book fee at a public university or college.

Hmm ~ no, states have precise reqirements for you to be considered a resident ~ and those rules apply to being a "resident for tuition purposes", or "voting", or "paying taxes", etc.

There's also a federal law that prohibits the practice you advocate. Illegal aliens NEVER earn or qualify for "residency" in a state ~ not ever!

One question ~ do state universities and colleges in Rhode Island receive funds from the state legislature?

If they do, instate tuition is not paying the bills.

At some point we finally have the will to send the Mexicans back to Mexico. At the same time we might have our mind-numbed Liberal judges demanding that the chillun be kept here ~ so we can adopt them out and assimilate them.

This is all hypothetical stuff of course, but undoubtedly there'd be a surplus of these kids ~ and the makings of a Corps of Janisaries.

Is this what people want? Or, is it time to ship them back home.

The response was to someone IN TEXAS.

Our assimilation into Mexico STOPS once we cut off Texas. They'll quickly be reduced to a supplier of raw commodities and oil ~ nothing more.

The problem will become "illegal alien Texicans" ~ but I think we can identify them much easier.

Federal law already establishes that illegal aliens do not become residents of states.

Regarding instate tuition rates, they are ALL subsidized by the taxpayers!

Specious reasoning.

Apparently you guys would rather be shooting down women and children on the border than putting up a fence (and various barricades) to keep the narcotrafficantes from driving in.

Hmm.

They are still illegal even before 18. We don’t have an exception in the law for the kiddies.

There are 1000's upon 1000's of illegals attending college throughout all those states. Residency can be verified by a utility bill. IF the parents names on it...that is it. It is very simple. Length of time can be verified in the same manner.

Texas took the bull by the horns and controlled it. Before Texas did this illegals were receiving in state tuition as any other legal Texas Student. They now have to jump through hoops to attend whereas not a legal Texas student. IF an illegal has a criminal record or below an average of B's no in state tuition, if a legal Texas student has a criminal record or is below a B average they still receive in state tuition.

Didn't I already tell you that's not the law. Many states don't specifically exclude illegals from instate tuition ~ they simply EXCLUDE everybody who is not here legally, who is not a resident, who has only a temporary visa, who looks at the dean crosseyed.

You don't need a law that specifically excludes illegals when you don't even let them enter the school.

BTW, those rules that require a visa? That's about a federally issued student visa. It doesn't give you instate tuition. It gives you a right to enter a specific school for a specific time at OUT OF STATE TUITION RATES.

Did you know current federal law requires that illegal aliens with children, whether those kids are born here or there, must depart with their children?

It's a viable approach to illegal aliens.

WE OWE THESE PEOPLE NOTHING.

Texas' illegal immigrants get instate tuition that is subsidized 20% through a direct appropriation from the state legislature. That's down from a higher 50% subsidy.

There is also federal funding for school programs on top of that.

Our tax dollars are used by Texas to pay educations for illegal alien adults.

Looks like Sarah isn’t running. Hopefully, the one issue people haven’t done irreparable harm to Perry. It wasn’t smart to burn the bridge of the frontrunner because that will leave us with Romney and I’m not voting for Romney. He’s the only nominee I won’t vote for. At least we can count on Perry on the other issues - guns, pro life, continued freedom of religion (the Christian kind), and tax cuts. I am sick over the way Perry has been treated here. Illegal immigration has been a problem for decades.

No, your residence laws and your instate tuition laws do not allow someone to come to Texas for a year, go to school in the meantime, and then get instate residency for purposes of tuition.

That's California, not Texas. Virtually all other states hold to the same standard ~ to wit, there is NO RIDING TIME for residency rules when the purpose of being in the state was to attend school.

There are a gazillion sites that show the TRUE FACTS. Illegal aliens get instate tuition in only a few places.

What you are thinking of is whether or not an illegal can enroll in a state college or university.

Your state has an unusual "residence rule" ~ that seeks to evade the FEDERAL LAW regarding state residence for illegal aliens.
