PHILADELPHIA (CBS) Thousands of people in Philadelphia are waiting in long lines for aid due to losses caused by Hurricane Irene; however, there is a lot of confusion over who exactly qualifies.
At several locations throughout the city, thousands lined up to get a months worth of food stamps for food that was ruined by Hurricane Irene in late August.
However, confusion of who is exactly qualified for the food stamps has lead to long lines and short tempers.
Officials say the application deadline is 7 p.m. Tuesday for the Federal Emergency Management Agency program, which is administered by the state.
Officials say it could take between 24-48 hours before an application for the food stamps is screened.
Does ANYone have a month's worth of food in their freezer? (Besides hunters, of course.)
This is a new giveaway -- It started with the free debit cards after Katrina, and now it a free month's worth of food if the power goes out for 48 hours. Insane.
I think that those who are so freely giving away our money have convinced themselves that they are saving oppressed people, people who are victims of capitalism.
The line between “in poverty but gets ALL the government freebies” and “2 income, works hard, pays all their own bills and taxes” households is very slim as to the standard of living each can experience.
I think one of the few characteristics that separate us is self-respect. Self-respect is why you bother to do anything for yourself. Think of the alternative.
This country needs to promote more options to achieve self-respect than options to mooch off the hard-working, self-respecting taxpayers (in the name of the government).
If there is a way to scam the government, they know about it.
That’s what “community organizin’” is all about - gettin’ stuff for the people, whether they know they need it or not.
Yeah I'm stressing alright. I just can't stand this crap. It is NOT the American way.
Other than milk and bread, some fresh produce, we probably have a month’s worth of food in our freezer and cabinets. Not through intentional stocking up as much as that we tend to buy (especially freezer items) when on sale. I roasted a chicken on Sunday, had been in the freezer for a few weeks. It was $4.58. We got 3 generous meals for 2 from it, with some leftover still.
Oh dude, that is such a good analogy. It is exactly the same thing.
I think I’m gonna puke...
No wonder FEMA is running out of budgeted funds...
When do the Gubmint debit cards get issued to buy flat screen TV’s and beer?
Licking food stamps is a known cause of the “sikkel cells”.
I get your point, but they are just trying to buy votes. But does anyone think these people would wait in a long line to cast a vote?
OK took me a minute.
First none of wear work boots. It’s urban footwear.
With all the clean up work needed, it would make sense to get these people on clean up detail, then pay them at the end of the day with the food stamps. Make them work for it. Might take a few pounds off in the process.
We “lost” a whole refrigerator full of food to the storm by giving it away to those who had power. Now, we’re not well off people, but no one sent notice to us that we could get a voucher for it, nor will we seek one.
Well it is Philadelphia, it’s like Sierra Leone with a professional baseball team. Wall the city off and send in Kurt Russell to clean the place up.
Seriously, same here. My power was out for two days and I tossed out the (not-so) frozen vegetables, and a few other things, but adding ice to the freezer before the storm saved the frozen meats.
You win. Good one.
I'm surprised Obama didn't schedule one of his black-bus campaign stops to coincide with the handing out of more taxpayer loot.
Maybe they should have BMW testing for qualification........
Or maybe this would be more appropriate:
Hey! This ain’t fair. Just $375. Ole Jefferson lost way more than that in his freezer when the power went out. T’aint fair I say.
What a radical idea!!!! Making folks actually WORK to EARN what they are getting... Oh mY! That just won't do.
