RICK PERRY'S AWFUL WEEKEND: Will He Be The Next GOP Candidate To Flame-Out?
Business Insider ^ | Sep. 25, 2011, | Staff

Posted on 09/25/2011 10:10:12 AM PDT by BarnacleCenturion

Texas Governor Rick Perry's once-surging campaign is on thin ice, after flailing in three debates and suffering defeats in two key-state straw polls.

Once limited to the opinion page of the Wall Street Journal or The Weekly Standard, concerns over Perry's electability are now very much in the mainstream.

In a major upset for the Perry campaign, former Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain won the Florida Presidency 5 Straw Poll by a 22-point margin — a race Perry heavily contested. Later Saturday, favorite son and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney blew away Perry in the Michigan Straw Poll by a surprising 34-point margin.

Many of his problems have been self-inflicted. Perry's debate performance has been inconsistent, at best — and surprisingly Perry decided to engage his opponents, rather than focus his criticism on Obama.

The substance of his answers has also drawn criticism — and parody — for his incoherent and controversial responses on foreign policy and immigration, respectively.

“Beaten in Florida by Herman Cain, and still trailed Perry. Now that’s a pretty lousy weekend imo.”

Good point.

LOl, how quickly people forget McCain's debates and his record and the fact that he won the primary. Majority of primary voters are not paying attention to these debates.

Also, 99.9% of primary voters are not GOP political activists (most of them far further Right than the average voter) like the ones that gave 900 votes to Cain out of a mere 2,700 in a "Straw Poll" to supposedly "win" the entire State of Florida.

When a "poll" is taken among a small group of self-selected political junkies, you get results that may or may not have anything to do with how the rest of the entire electorate thinks.

Guess who was the debate winner by a HUGE margin in the FOX News post-debate Internet poll?

Ron Paul.

"Straw Polls" and Internet polls are Self Selection Bias polls and are worthless for predicting how the general population feels about any issue.

When rigorously conducted polls come out later next week, then we will have a better understanding about the fallout of the debate.

To follow up the point of my last post, I just looked up the results of today's Michigan Straw Poll.

Mitt Romney absolutely CRUSHED Cain 50.1% to 8.5%.

Michigan native Mitt Romney rolled over Texas Gov. Rick Perry and the rest of his Republican presidential rivals in a Michigan straw poll on Sunday, ..... In the straw poll, Romney won 50.1 percent of the 681 votes cast compared to 16.8 percent for Perry. ..... Cain got 8.5 percent,

Moral of the story: What flies with the hard core political junkies in one region of the country crashes and burn in another region of the country. Therefore, the results Self-Selection Bias "Straw Polls" are not worth a bucket of warm spit.

“However good Herman Cain may be, people aren’t going to make his first elective position Vice President, let alone President.”

The man is REALLY smart and he is Black. So, he wouldn’t be a dumb bumkin and he negates the race card played by Obama. Also, Palin really is a maverick and I don’t think she would be held to “conventional” thinking.

Clairity: Perry is strong on border security, with a record to show.

LibertarianInExile: Speaking as someone who’s in Texas every week, I laughed out loud at this statement.

I'm laughing right along with you LibInEx. We all know that granting in state tuition to an illegal in NOT tough on border security. Neither is speaking to La Raza and working to keep from putting up a fence saying it won't work when we have an awesome example of it working in CA.

There are a lot of us that know what needs to be done to help the illegal problem and Perry isn't talking about any of them!

Eh, that’s mainly AP style but notably it does seem to be abused both for “former” and “Godfather’s” effect...

“Add to Perry’s loss column yesterday’s shellacking he took in Michigan. Romney won that with huge margins. Perry spent a lot of time in the ground in Michigan, and still lost.”

Well it is...

... Michigan...

Perry needs to learn the cardinal rules of debate for politicians:

1) Don’t shoot yourself in the foot.

2) If you *must* violate rule 1, make sure your foot is out of your mouth before firing.

3) If you *must* violate rules 1 and 2, please refrain from re-loading.

4) If you absolutely cannot *help* but violate rules 1, 2, and 3, the for God’s sake don’t follow up by aiming at the other foot because ‘Duh, I missed.”

Cheers!

Post of the day! LMAO!!!

I think in order to get elected the GOP needs someone who is more :middle of the road". We need to get the Independents on board and having an "uber" conservative just isn't going to get it.

That strategy worked out really well in 2008 didn't it!!!!!

Perry or Obama. Pick one.

Trying to scare Conservatives into supporting Perry isn't going to work. The best hope you have is that the MSM keeps the charade up that it's the Romney and Perry show.

What’s this about Christie and Huntsman being leftists? I don’t vote for leftists, and I voted for Huntsman twice! That said, I’m not sure what got into him in recent years. He was a fairly conservative governor! I can’t say I’d agree w/him or vote for him. I would if he got the nomination, of course!

Then there’s Gov. Christie. Just a year ago or so, a whole lot of people on here were thrilled to pieces when he won New Jersey! Now they act as if he’s some left-wing fiend! It’s scary when people change their mind THAT quickly! He was conservative enough for most folks on here 2 years ago or so!

Perry will mandate federally subsidized heart transplants for those who disagree with his in-state tuition program.

That sounds more like Perry.

He's not down and out yet. Yes, he has had a bad streak. But that goes with the campaign, has every four years for all the candidates.

I don't support him primarily on the documented immigration flip-flops, but he has not thrown in the towel yet, nor do I expect the Governor him to do so in the near future.

“Perry or Obama. Pick one.”

Your choice is a false one. Gov. Perry is not the end all choice. Never has been. He’s just the “conservative” candidate that the lamestream media and the gop establishment tend to favor.

And in any case, if that’s what our choice comes down to, then I’d happily pick a 3rd party candidate. I’m done holding my nose and voting for the less mediocre of two bad choices. And I’ll have lots of company.

“I’m so loving this. The mortal terror of the PDS afflicted is becoming palpable....LOL”

If Sarah runs, the howling of so-called “conservatives” will be something to remember. And savor.

Christie is pro-abortion, anti-gun, and all of the liberal views. I will not vote for anyone but a true conservative this time.

It’s as I said: if not Perry, it’s Romney, if it’s Romney, it’s Obama. That’s the bottom line

Unfortunately your candidate could not say that without getting lost and confused.
