In a severe embarrassment for the Republican presidential frontrunner, businessman Herman Cain tripped up Gov. Rick Perry in a straw ballot of Florida Republican activists Saturday.
The vote has no bearing on the choice of a 2012 nominee but, along with recent campaign events, is likely to increase the chances that the Republican presidential contest will tighten. It comes on the heels of a poor performance by Perry in a Florida debate Thursday night that disappointed conservatives, including delegates who came to Orlando expecting to back the Texas governor.
Cain received 37% of the vote, more than twice as many as Perry, who made by far the most extensive effort, but finished a distant second with 15%. He barely edged out Mitt Romney, who did not compete here, at 14%.

Speaking of Biblical times, did they ever find Abel's body?
Fantastic!!!
Support for affirmative action and allowing open homosexuals in his cabinet sure to draw some fire as conservatives start to scrutinize him more.
Why?
Herman Cain could be the MAN who will change EVERYTHING.. and for the BETTER.
I can throw my support behind Herman Cain without hesitation.
I think there are MANY of us that feel this way.
You mean Rudy, right?
Dunno-—ask Perry (/snix).
He also upset Romney, Bachmann (YIKES dead last!) Santorum, Newt, Huntsman, Johnson....who else is running?
I’m looking forward to the “tolerant” and non-racist, commie libs attacking Cain as being a “uncle Tom teabagger” as their heads start exploding. Go Cain!
While straw polls mean pretty much ... nothing. I do think this one spells trouble for Michelle.
I love Herman Cain. My first choice is Newt however Im a realist and I know he doesnt have a legitimate chance. Herman Cain is my choice. What would it do to the black liberal vote if Herman got into office and was able to pull us out of this mess in his first term? It would throw the race baiting left into a friggin tizzy. Herman would absolutely crush O in a debate.
What will it do to the argument that the Tea Party is racist?
Fox News has RINOs on staff and leading the discussions?
First I have heard of that.....
Cain really benefited from Perry’s laying an egg and Cain’s own well received performance at that debate.
I can throw my support behind anyone but Romney.
I think you are correct with regards to Bachmann. Her campaign is doomed, I think, between her attacks on Perry but not Romney, and her old “friend” Ed Rollins. I thought she’d outlast Santorum and Gingrich, but not now.
I love Herman and Newt as well - I wish Newt would go for chief of staff - the guy is too brilliant for office.
Sorry but that is not a call for open borders.
