In a severe embarrassment for the Republican presidential frontrunner, businessman Herman Cain tripped up Gov. Rick Perry in a straw ballot of Florida Republican activists Saturday.
The vote has no bearing on the choice of a 2012 nominee but, along with recent campaign events, is likely to increase the chances that the Republican presidential contest will tighten. It comes on the heels of a poor performance by Perry in a Florida debate Thursday night that disappointed conservatives, including delegates who came to Orlando expecting to back the Texas governor.
Cain received 37% of the vote, more than twice as many as Perry, who made by far the most extensive effort, but finished a distant second with 15%. He barely edged out Mitt Romney, who did not compete here, at 14%.

Revolution #9-9-9.
"Romney's substantial 3 to 1 loss to Herman Cain
proves that, to FOX News, my Milt Romney
is your lead candidate."
He’s rated “excellent” here

The P and VP cannot be from the same state.
Both Cain and Newt are from GA.
Cain/Anybody
Anybody/Cain
I’ll be for them.
Sarah OTOH is dead.
Actually, every candidate to win this poll went on to win the Republican nomination since 1979 :-)
Just sayin’
Herman Cain Delivers!
Caan you post even one link quoting Rick Perry saying he's for 'Open Borders"?
Oh...and congratulations to Herman Cain.
You and me both brother. I respect Herman more than I can state in words.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
Complete. Total. I’ve listened to him enough as a talk host (usually filling in for Neil Boortz) to feel like I know his mind, his heart, and his soul.
RESPECT is what I feel for him.
Watch him get twice as many questions in the next debate. It’ll be nice to see the ones with $150 hair-dos in the acknowledged “also-ran” section.
Kinda breaks your heart...
...NAAAAAAH !
” How do straw poll results affect anything really? “
Just read where a tweet reported that Romney had a portion of his delegates vote for CAIN, to skew the results. Dirty tricks was mentioned. No way to tell if this true but found it in reports from commenters on hotair.com.
Another poll is always a snapshot in time and based on events. Recent debate disasters, momentum, great debate successes, gaffes, but all events. The measurement of those events and the mood of the delegates delivers an outcome for the day. And maybe some dirty tricks here and there. :(

Today we begin a new dialogue about our shared future, a future of promising potential if we work together to solve the challenges we both face. It is fitting that we convene this summit where the great, meandering river known as the Rio Grande or the Rio Bravo forms the long border between Texas and Mexico. In years past, that famed body of water has been seen by many as a dividing point, If you were to walk along its banks and look to the other side, based on the stereotypes of the past, you would think you were seeing things a million miles away, instead of a stones throw away. But I am here today to say that while we have honest differences, there is more that unites us than divides us. The Rio Grande does not separate two nations, it joins two peoples. Mexico and the United States have a shared history, and a common future. And it is along this border where we will either fail or succeed in addressing the education, health care and transportation needs of our two peoples.
How’s that? There’s more, if that won’t do it.
Rick Perry in 2012: The idea that you are going to build a wall, a fence for 1,200 miles, and then go 800 miles more to Tijuana, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 1980: The idea that you are going to build a tunnel under the sea between England and France, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 1963: The idea that you are going to send a man from the earth to the moon and back across that distance, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 1944: The idea that you are going to send a fleet across the English Channel and land tens of thousands of men on shore on the other side, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 1930: The idea that you are going to build a huge dam, in the middle of a river, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 1904: The idea that you are going to dig a giant trench from the Atlantic to the Pacific for some sort of canal, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 1903: The idea that you are going to fly through the air in some sort of flying machine does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 1860: The idea that you are going to build a railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 1492: The idea that you are going to sail west across the ocean, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 1400: The idea that you are going to build a long line of dikes to hold back the sea, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in 400 B.C.: The idea that you are going to build a wall on the border with Mongolia, does not make sense.
Rick Perry in Biblical times: The idea that you are going to build a giant ark, does not make sense.
======================================
Rick Perry after the Fla debate.
"The idea that heartless Americans are gonna
vote for a great guy like me makes no sense."
This is a pretty big deal.
Does the straw poll mean he is the frontrunner? No. But it tells me these things:
Rick Perry may have done a Thomas Eagleton this past Thursday.
The party was paying attention to those debates and viewed both Cain and Santorum as worthy candidates to give a second look to as we head into the fall.
The question is whether Perry can stop his free fall.
Me too!
One thing’s for sure. The last guy offered the lead role in “Herman Cain’s long Road to the White House” will be Morgan Freeman.
Although it is true, Milt is Master of the Dirty Tricks,
THAT is not one of them.
Romney will pay money (donated to Sen. Brown, for example)
for votes for himself. Not for anyone else.
Milt Romney may be a liberal political cross-dresser
but he is not a fool.
I agree however because he won (and didn’t pay anyone), his name is all over the place so people might check out who he is.
