Santorum condemns booing of gay soldier

In an interview with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum commented on the reaction to a question from a gay soldier at last night’s debate. “I condemn the people who booed that gay soldier,” he said. “I have to admit I seriously did not hear those boos. ... But certainly had I, I would’ve said, “Don’t do that. This man is serving our country and we are to thank him for his service.”

You aren’t the only Santorum supporter.

The gay soldier announced that he was gay for the reason most gays make their sexual preference known, whether it matters at the moment, or not; to put the subject of their announcement on the defensive. I wouldn't be surprised if the soldier expected a round of applause for stating that he was homosexual ('gay') and asking a pointed question about gays in the military. Rick Santorum condemning the booing - conveniently after the fact - on the basis that he assumed it was due to the soldier saying that he was gay indicates that (a) Santorum is being coy and, (b) he is saying what he thinks he is supposed to say in this instance. He's probably right. Which is why a gay soldier made sure to state that he is gay when he asked his question about whether Santorum would continue to support the new gay-friendly polices on military recruitment practices.

For all we know the booing could have been done by DNC plants because the leftmedia is using it to validate their vicious lie that 'Republicans hate gays' (and, as they often add, anyone not white, heterosexual and Christian). Since I doubt the election will turn on who gets the homosexual vote this is not terribly important but it demonstrates the abject fear the left has of the TEA party. They are pulling out all the stops to defame the TEA party folks and convince Americans they are a bunch of KKK-style haters that want to shove Christianity down the throats of Americans. That is insane and a palpable lie but the left is getting desperate as they see the nation slowly turning on Obama and threatening to dismantle the socialist structure the left has carefully built over the past 70 years. Look for lots of this 'Republicans hate...(fill in the minority group) rhetoric in the weeks to come. Expect it to reach tsunami proportions if Sarah Palin enters the race, as I hope she does because she will be prepared to deal with the smears and evaporate them as they are based on fallacies.

Really? Whenever I bother to get involved with defending him, it degenerates into what a POS Rick is. I get flamed. I know there are at least two supporters because I get FReepmailed from them afraid to get involved with my beat down.

When Ricks brand of Conservatism is deemed as not genuine and unelectable, I am giving up and taking up fly fishing.

“I am the lone Santorum guy here. Have been and always will be.”

Naw. I love the guy. Always have, and always will for his clarity about the centrality of traditional values to the American soul.

He needs to stop wincing when he listens and speaks, though.

He delivered the knock-out punch to Perry on the subsidy issue. It’s not about preventing children of illegals from going. It’s about not subsidizing them at the expense of legals. He said it with passion and a touch of irritation at Perry’s obtuseness. Perry visibly deflated after the blow.

Santorum’s message about the necessity of foreign conflict is not going over well, or at least not as well as Paul’s message about withdrawal and isolation. But, he’s got the courage of his convictions, and I think he’s got the better of the argument in substance. This is a dangerous world, with or without our engagement. Better to shape events (within the limits of decency and respect for difference) than wait for them to shape you.

Kind of a dilemma, a soldier defending America who is hellbent on destroying it.

I have taken note. It is the new cool Libertarian thing as irrational as it is in actual practice. I have been getting Ricks weekly e mails since he left office. They are always solid articles on foreign policy and are as thoughtful as Boltons ideas, in their depth of knowledge and topics covered. Rick is a lot deeper than most people pigeon hole him as.

Quite frankly as a Veteran I was embarrassed, and even felt insulted last night.

Why? A soldier asked a political question at a political forum and some people disagreed with his politics and booed him.

And this is somehow a big freaking deal?

Again I ask why?

Is it not possible to support the soldier and dislike his policy preferences?

Signed, a former soldier.

” I don’t see the need for the audience to react like we are all in Harlem watching a movie in the theater.”

They see their Culture and country circling the drain and maybe they get emotional and before they know it they are reacting. Maybe they can learn to shut up and sit there silently, just watching.

A fag in a war zone wants to discuss being a fag? What a surprise.

Yes it is a big freaking deal. About 20-25% of the Military are Democrats and yes I disagree with their politics. But I am not going to boo them. They deserve my thanks for serving, regardless of their political leaning. And the Liberals are already using the soundbite with the caption Republican audience boos Gay soldier, when we know it was only a few.

I think the best Republican Response for this issue would be:

“I believe Sexual Activity of any kind has absolutely no place in our military and such activities between service men and women has a negative effect on the effectiveness of our service men and women”

When the press tries to use this as an attack point, you turn around and say: “What part of ‘sexual activity’ do you not understand?”

To Navy guys I guess it’s a big freaking deal, to a soldier, believe me, it is no biggie. You don’t want to express disapproval of policies you disagree with then don’t. I, however, will continue to do so no matter where the soldier advocating them sticks his unit.

I agree. Good response.

A response that I would have liked:

You are away from home, fighting the enemy of your country. I’ll answer your question but, first, I want to say that I cannot believe that your question isn’t “What would you do to finish this and get us home?”

There is a time for rallies and cheering. This was not. Does absolutely everything in this culture have to be brought down to a lower level? For crying out loud, looking around in church, people look like they just rolled in from the beach. No more ties and dresses. I have little sympathy for this type of stuff. Let the Rats act like animals. It’s their thing, not mine.

Pretty much, but it may be a better way of saying it.

Excellent. Wish Santorum had thought of that. Course some would complain that he dissed the soldier because he didn’t thank him before saying that.
