The NINE(!) Candidates:
Michele Bachmann
Bachmann is serving her 3rd full term in the U.S. House. Founder of the House Tea Party Caucus, worked as a tax attorney, and was a foster mother for 23 teenagers. She is a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Herman Cain
Cain is the former chief executive of Godfather's Pizza and former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. He lost the Georgia Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat in 2004. He was recently the host of Atlanta-based radio show.
Newt Gingrich
Gingrich served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. He represented Georgia's 6th congressional district as a Republican member from 1979 to 1999. He has a PhD in modern European history.
Jon Huntsman
Huntsman was Utah Governor, former ambassador to China under Barack Obama.
Ron Paul
Paul is serving his 11th full term in the U.S. House. Hes an ob-gyn and was Libertarian nominee for president in 1988. He unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for president in 2008
Rick Perry
Perry is the three term governor of Texas, from 2000 to current. He is a retired Air Force captain for former farmer. He has a degree in animal science.
Mitt Romney
Romney was governor of Massachusetts (2003 to 2007) and former CEO of Bain Capital, a private equity investment firm. He unsuccessfully sought the Republican 2008 nomination for president. He has an MBA (Harvard) and JD (Harvard Law).
Rick Santorum
Santorum served two terms in the U.S. House and two terms in the U.S. Senate. He became the Senate's third-ranking Republican in 2001. He was defeated for reelection in 2006.
Gary Johnson
Johnson served as governor of New Mexico from 1995 to 2002. He founded what would become one of the largest construction companies in New Mexico. He has competed in several triathlons and climbed Mount Everest.
Santorum would be able to deliver about 10 more votes than Huntsman. He can lobby for VP, but he doesn’t bring any votes with him.
Exactly. Perry somehow translates his defeatist attitude on illegal immigration into a need to subsidize college education for those same illegals. When these illegals discover that government subsidies will no longer be available to them, they will stop coming. Yet Perry continues to offer them carrots.
Its not 1200 miles of wilderness around the WH.
Johnson sounds like a whiny baby too, just his voice and mannerism. I couldn’t get past that to listen to him. Huntsman man be the worst sniveler of all. YUK. Maybe I need a nap or a drink.
Amen to Herman Cain! The once I heard him. Eliminate EPA and start over.
That is why it is called the Republic of Texas not the Democracy of Texas.
certain classes getting a free ride based on being illegal
Who is getting a “free ride”??
True! But is he electable with all that baggage (and his weird wife Calista)?
I agree. I can understand building a fence in wide open places, but to build a fence along the Rio Grande makes no sense....especially economically.
Do you imagine that either of these "moderates" are highly desirable as President?
“Because the federal govt refuses to close the border or deport them. What is TX supposed to do with them, let them overwhelm their welfare system living as uneducated 2nd class. These are kids who parents brought them here. It may be the only life they have ever known. They arent going to pack up and go to some strange country.”
You could say that about the children of legal citizens, also. So subsidize them, too. Heck, just let the federal govt pay for everyone’s college. Then when they get their diplomas, they can go on welfare because there won’t be any jobs!!
It is not free, and any citizen can get the same deal.
These kids MUST SHOW thathey are working toward citizenship to have the privilege of PAYING in state tuition rates.
They must SHOW that they have been residents for 3 years.
That is the only requirement that a US citizen must show if they also wish to participate.
Perry is simply addressing the notion that the State is better off with educated citizens than bottom feeders.
Giant river, ROFLOL, wrong, many places you can walk across it and only get your ankles wet, but if you are south of El Paso your ankles may get a brown coating on them. Have you never seen it.??
Oh, a conrete wall.
Yes, most of these candidate spend more time pointing fingers, the feds point at the local level and the local level points at the feds and meanwhile NOTHING gets done, just as they planned.
The microphones at the debate are fussy. Wonder if it is from the union workers?
Ditto on that ..... Lived in both
Huntsman made an ass of himself. His isolationism is ignorant, and the crowd ought to be ashamed for applauding him.
Rick Perry’s response on the foreign policy question posed to him regarding Pakistan, was totally incoherent. It made no sense at all, and I was listening closely. This guy doesn’t know diddly squat about foreign policy and issues. Geez, and compound that with his border policies, I’d say his star is rapidly going to drop after tonite’s performance.
They are eligible to PAY in-state tuition, like all other Texas residents. It is not free.
I actually agree with Huntsman.
