My sentiments exactly...see my tagline.
That’s last year’s table. Have you looked at the CURRENT YEAR ~ it’s called 2011/2012. There are some serious changes. http://www.utexas.edu/business/accounting/pubs/tf_undergrad_fall11.pdf You can get an idea of how magnificent the subsidy formerly was when you notice that undergraduate in-state tuition has more than doubled for this year. California tuitions rose even more and students are currently rioting over the matter.
Missed the debate but here’s my .0002 cents after reading
comments:
1. Romney remains in a strong position because of establishment support and the fawning connivance of the media (which will promptly dump him in the general). However, he continues to fail to excite the GOP base. Given the threat he poses, the other candidates should have focused on him rather than on Perry.
2. Perry’s initial momentum has apparently stalled after his lackluster debate performance. It seems a lot of people who have put their hopes in him have been at least somewhat disappointed.
3. Bachman is fading; her increasingly shrill attacks (both during the debate and in anti-Perry ads) come across as intemperate desperation.
4. Gingrich has the smarts and is a great communicator, but his negatives preclude him as a viable candidate.
5. Santorum is ideologically pure, but has not gained significant traction. The remaining candidates are likewise insignificant at this point.
The Wild Card in all this is Palin. I would like to see her throw her hat in the ring to see how she would stack up against the others.
http://www.utexas.edu/business/accounting/pubs/tf_undergrad_fall11.pdf I hate to use this twice but Texas changed the level of state subsidies for higher education this year. The current in-state fees did something more than “inch toward” the out of state fees ~ they seem to have DOUBLED and are currently within $4,000 per semester of the out of state. That reduces the direct subsidy to about $8,000 per year rather than the full $22,000. Romney’s folks used a ref that included housing. Seems out of state students don’t get access to the cheaper dorms in a lot of these schools ~ or could be the relative percentages of freshmen and grad students is different. I didn’t dig through it.
The fees that a college charges in addition to tuition can make the total cost a lot more than that, but AFAIK there is no extra charge for out-of-state students for those. LINK: Required fees include laboratory fees, supplementary fees, incidental fees, the aquatic complex fee, the Gregory Gymnasium renovation fee, the health services building fee, the information technology fee, the international education fee, the library fee, the medical services fee, the recreational sports fee, the registration fee, the student services fee, the student services building fee, and the Texas Union fee.
Perry could have nailed Romney on this point, but maybe he didn't have time in the debate format.
I don't think this Dream Act is fair, because it allows reduced tuition for illegal aliens who have no way of ever being legal, but the legislature passed it fair and square. And if enough Texans agree with me, the law can be changed to require aliens to apply for legal status before they apply for the Dream Act.
That is $12,000 per semester, or $24,000 per year.
See, I am able to go back and check errors.
That is a fascinating difference ~ Texas actually thinks they can get $34,000 from out of state undergraduate students.
No doubt they plan on using the higher rates to subsidize even more illegal aliens.
81% of new jobs created in Texas since the start of the last recession went to immigrants...both legal and illegal.
I understand that Texas has some reasonable boundaries on the freebies it gifts to illegally entered college students and that is good, also good is that one doesn’t penalize the kid for the sins of the parent — yet it is bad that it is a reward to the parents for such bad behavior.
Me, I am for open borders between equals, like Canada. Many years ago around the the time of The Republic (of Texas) we and May-he-koh where equals. Sometime around the time of the shoemaker Pancho Villa that changed. That part of the US grew beyond the ability to keep a safe border with the immature and sickened governments in the lands South of the Border.
We need not only a strong border, but even an armed police action in Northern Mexico border estados where we install native forces trained and subordinate to our own government, military and police. We also need to decriminalize marijuana, and lessen the penalties for cocaine and heroin. In other words, abandon the Wat on Drugs.
By doing so in two generations — 37 years — we will be able to open out borders because we will then be equals.
Returning to the near point. Mr. Perry.
I object most to Mr. Perry’s bleeding heart style emotional style of defending his executive choices, and of his inability or unwillingness to give credit to the most valid and obvious objections against those policies, he instead turns the argument into that which the despicable Democrats and Marxists use often. Argument by hyper emotional inflation of a few clearly sympatico examples.
The young woman will cervical cancer, or the young student here because his illegal entering parents dragged him here. These are examples upon which a logical, honest and rational person — a TRUE LEADER, a Ronald Reagan — uses to inform and make real a argument of ideas and ideals.
Mr. Perry doesn’t do so. He grabs the dead rat in his maw and drags it onto the supper table defiantly. He makes only two arguments. One: IT WAS MY DECISION TO MAKE. Two: ONLY THE MOST HEARTLESS WOULD DISAGREE WITH ME.
I’m sorry Texas. Mr. Perry may be a good governor for your Republic-become-State today, but he will be a terrible leader for America. Unless and until he gets a muy serioso attitude adjustment.
Romney's error was in NOT using current year ~ which makes the subsidy level $24,000 per annum!!!!
Several universities provide an estimated cost for housing, et al, and the amount for out of state students is higher than in state. I think that has to do with relative costs of freshman dormitories versus living in town.
But, back to the Romney number ~ it's EVEN HIGHER THIS YEAR!
The people in your legislature are IDIOTS.
Then back a conservative. Because if there is one on the ticket. I’ll vote for him. Tired of being Charlie Brown and trying to kick the football.
“... Romney should have shot back with First you were Al Gores campaign manager, now your here posting as a Conservative.”
Yeah, I meant to agree with you on that one. What I am saying is that the things that actually do make a difference are things that are considered "heartless".
Which is also, what I think you wrote in your next sentences. It's easier to buy a bumper sticker... etc then to think about ways to reform welfare.
I think young men want to make a difference, but are generally more ok with the status quo. I believe that's what you were asking. If not, I apologize.
Very good posting, justice14.
It’s great to hear from a young person like yourself that is already seeing the world like it really is and is willing to express your thoughts. That means there is still hope for America. Hang in there! I’m 69 and really appreciate the younger generations that recognize what is right for getting this country back on track. ....Best of luck to you in the future.
Thanks for the correction, I missed that. So Perry didn't have an answer to that after all. (BTW I think Romney is likely to be worse than Perry, but I am going to be hard on both.)
The people in your legislature are IDIOTS.
Yes, I can understand the argument that students who really have a current application for permanent residence are trying to do the right thing, but the actual "requirement" is only that they sign a paper stating that they "will apply" some day. That needs to change.
But it is good that they passed voter ID.
Don’t know who you guys want to be our nominee, but I like Mitt more than last time..... Perry is OUT~ I like Newt and Bachman but they are un-electable and Santorum is good, but doesn’t have that persona or popularity.
Yes, VOTER ID ~ that’s a good thing!
Charmed by your hostile analysis of my post. I can’t tell you the last time I saw or heard Mike Wallace say anything and I did not doze off. Maybe you didn’t notice how much time Perry and Romney spent attacking each other’s positions. Doze off?
Carville(D):
"It's a feel-good story, this Romney thing.
Romney is an ascendant guy."
Sen. John Kerry (D) to Don Imus on RomneyCARE:
"I like this health care bill".
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D) on RomneyCARE:
"To come up with a bipartisan plan in this polarized environment is commendable."
