Particles recorded moving faster than light: CERN
Reuters ^ | September 22, 2011 | Robert Evans

Posted on 09/22/2011 12:16:56 PM PDT by John W

An international team of scientists has recorded neutrino particles traveling faster than the speed of light, a spokesman for the researchers said on Thursday -- in what could be a challenge to one of the fundamental rules of physics.

If confirmed, the discovery would overturn a key part of Albert Einstein's 1905 theory of special relativity, which says that nothing in the universe can travel faster than light.

Jeff, you read it wrong.

Possibly, but I prefer my reality and am not about to give it up!

This is a hoax because the only thing that can travel faster than the speed of light is bad news.

You are a special relativity denier.

Heretic! Burn him at the stake!

My cousin Vito in Gran Sasso was shooting his neutrino gun at those giant collectors. More of my juvenile delinquent relatives messing up science.

Named categorizations are a basic aspect of sentient intelligence.
Earth Fire Air Water
Gravity Electromagnetic Strong Weak
What's the difference? Just try and make a good solid argument that there is a real difference between the two lists, and then for the sake of real understanding make as potent an argument that there is no difference. It's a simple primary grade school exercise in in the planetary system I come. I think you can do it, maybe.

Here's another I think I was the first to describe:

Male Female
Fermion Boson
Besides in other castings there are three or five fundie forces, eg, Chinese Traditional uses:

Wood (木, mù)
Fire (火, huǒ)
Earth (土, tǔ)
Metal (金, jīn)
Water (水, shuǐ)

ROFLMAO!

Priceless

Jeff I see others have corrected your reading of the article but I smiled when you did the “warp factor” calculation. Knew what you were saying without having to even think twice. If we ever have FTL and it is measured in a “warp factor” notation you could be one of the first to have done so.
Somewhere Gene Roddenberry is smiling.

So how come everyone seems to have missed THE fundamental question....

Did it have its headlights on?

"If I read Einstein correctly these particles are not actually traveling faster than the speed of light, but are, in fact traveling backwards through time."

If that should be the case...we best start listening....someone could be trying to send us a message....

After some minor corrections to the parsing of the sentence in the article we now arrive at warp factor of something like 1.0025, which is just so depressing. I want to turn my warp dials all the way up to eleven!

"Just about everything is out the window if the speed limit of light is more of a recommendation than a rule."

But...but...but I thought we had a consensus.

Maybe the speed of light is getting faster.

Look on the bright side, we won't have Scotty running around in a panic telling Kirk "If we keep this speed up captain, she's going to blow" :^)

Time running backwards and distance becoming negative?........Just wondering.

Once they prove it to everyone’s satisfaction nothing will be done with the discovery for several million years ~ because, as it turns out, neutrinos are really difficult to interact with.
