Romney: Palin Candidacy ‘Would Be a Good Thing’

Danny Yadron

September 22, 2011

Public opinion polls show most Republicans think otherwise, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said he hopes Sarah Palin joins the 2012 presidential fray.

“I think it would be a good thing if she did,” Mr. Romney said in an interview with USA Today. “She would make the race that much more exciting, bring more people to watch the debates, and I hope she gets in.”

What Mr. Romney didn’t mention is that Ms. Palin’s entry into the race could siphon support from Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Recent national public opinion polls that included the former Alaska governor often show her in third place behind Messrs. Perry and Romney. That would also give the contest another candidate who has attacked Mr. Perry on his 2007 executive order that required young girls to receive a vaccine against a sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.

Some 72% of GOP primary voters said they do not want Ms. Palin to run in a McClatchy-Marist poll release this week.

In other Palin news, her political action committee has sent out a fund-raising letter that says the former governor is “on the verge of making her decision...

Or she might be smart enough to know that Crony Perry won’t play outside of the Texas and parts of the South once voters actually get to know him, that Crony Perry can’t take corruption to Obama any more than Mitt can take Obamacare to him, and that the race will whittle down to Romney vs. the better (truer) conservative option quickly enough.

IMO Palin’s entry lowers the chances of our getting stuck with Mitt, while increasing the chances we have a strong candidate to run against Obama.

(Don’t look now but the latest polls already show Palin more competitive than Perry against Obama and with Perry completely lost in NH.)

Both Newt and Cain voters, if they have any sense and sense of civic responsibility, will pick from the viable candidates after the first couple of primaries.

Well? It would be.

If you’ that worried about whether your guy can win if somebody else gets in...maybe that’s as big a problem for your guy as it is for the somebody else. If not more so.

Yeah, but the whole question serves zero purpose except as a springboard for platitudes -- would ANY current GOP candidate publicly declare he/she thought a Palin candidacy would be a bad thing? Let's say Perry did just that, arguing that Palin might split the take in Romney's favor. He'd come across to many as feeling threatened and whining about it. No, that Romney says a Palin candidacy would be a good thing is about as significant as Congress making a proclamation declaring June as "National Ice Cream Month."

As for not entering the race for fear of taking votes from Perry -- conventional wisdom (an oxymoron in politics) seems to be that Perry isn't as risky. There are TWO truths:

1. For all of Perry's good points, there remain valid, significant doubts about Perry's positions on immigration and "crony capitalism," not to mention the two very different approaches that, as governors, Palin and Perry took with regard to the Gardasil issue. Perry issued an Executive Order and mandated it with an opt-out, whereas Palin refused to mandate it and left it in the hands of the Feds. There are major weaknesses with regard to Perry that, as far as I can tell, are exlusive to him; Palin is in the clear on at least two, if not all three of those issues.

2. Perry presents a much, much higher risk of being victimized by an "October Surprise" kind of scandal, as he has never experienced a small fraction of the hostile vetting and scandal-digging that Palin has. Palin is 100 percent campaign-ready in that regard, whereas Perry is extremly risky and vulnerable in that regard.

I believe I have pretty good reason to question the "conventional wisdom" that Romney will only lose if Palin doesn't get in the race.

How is it that John McCain became our nominee in 2008?

Rudy had set up Super Tuesday to give him an advantage with winner-take-all primaries in NY and NJ. When Rudy stumbled in FL, McCain ran through that door instead.

NY and NJ are no longer on Super Tuesday and I believe they are no longer are winner-take-all.

I do believe the poor boy honestly thinks he could beat Palin! “That’s a joke, I say, that’s a joke, son.”

My personal belief is that it would end up a Palin/Perry race.

I didn’t mean a joint ticket, I meant a race between Palin and Perry. Thought I’d better clarify my last statement.

Perry wants to secure the border using high tech hardware, more BP agents, TNG troops if necessary and limited fencing around merto areas. He thinks a full border fence is unrealisitc. Perry also believes its the feds job to handle the immigration issue, like securing the borders. With sharing costs between state and federal govts.

Palin ran with John McCain in 2008. McCain is the biggest amnesty freak on the GOP side. Remember the McCain-Kennedy comprehensive immigration reform bill that included blanket amnesty? Eventually it was killed off.

Sarah Palin had a Q&A/interview with Univision's Jorge Ramos on Oct 26 2008:

Q: So you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

A: I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

I’ll remind you that you said that if she gets in and all of a sudden Romney is the front-runner with both Perry and Palin between 15 and 20%.

So Huckabee and Romney didn’t split any votes at all leaving McCain the last RINO standing?

Well of course it. For Mitt. She would suck up all the votes from the lesser conservatives,

A most worthy goal, to get the lesser conservatives out of the race. We don't need them. Let's have a serious debate between the Greater Conservative and the Mass. Moderate. My money is on Sarah Palin and American conservatism to win over New England liberalism.
