Having tied the knot in a white wedding, a lesbian couple thought the icing on the cake would be a traditional honeymoon along with other young couples.
But the trip turned out to be a nightmare after staff at their resort treated them as if it was not a "real honeymoon" and excluded them from special romantic meals and dances.
Gemma Harman, 24, and Tamsin Harper, 36, said it was the "worst two weeks" of their lives and the "homophobic manner" in which they were treated was "disgusting".
The couple, from Brighouse, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, decided to go on the trip to a resort in Dominican Republic run by Thomson after their civil ceremony.
As it specialised in honeymoon couples and was run by a major tour operator they thought it would an ideal way to celebrate their union.
But they claim the company refused to acknowledge their holiday as a honeymoon and say they did not receive the special treatment offered to others because they were a same-sex couple. Ms Harman was so angry she contacted a local radio station to complain about "homophobic manner" in which they were treated.
The newly-weds claimed that other couples were treated "like VIPs", being offered special romantic meals at the hotel and having bottles of rum and fruit put in their room, but they received nothing.
When they tried to book a meal, it was never arranged and when they tried to complain, staff were "dismissive".
They were even excluded from a dancing competition because they were not a male and female pairing.
"They just did not treat us the same as everybody else," Ms Harman told Real Radio.

If you can’t stand the heat get the hell out of the kitchen!
eharmoney, good point but we know and they know it was a site for man between woman couples.
Homosexuals always do this , remember back up in MA where a homosexual woman couple went to Catholic charities and said they wanted to adopt a kid from them?
They knew damn well they would not get one but they sued and won in MA land thus closing down a fine adoption agency and now the kids lose out as well as parents who wanted to adopt from Catholic charities.
Agree we live in a liberal la la land, especially in public schools but we also have to remember much of the world is not as kooky as many here are. It seems their vacation country is one of them.
Anyway they said it was the worst two weeks of their life.
We I don’t know about you but when I don’t like a place I don’t stay. Maybe I am a little weary but I think they enjoyed themselves there, got drunk, had a party/blast and then went looking for attention.
On the contrary.
“Did the couple tell the company that they were same-sex couple when they made reservation?”
I doubt they did. What they usually do is register under initials. I went to a monastery for a weekend, where two lesbians tried to do the same thing, by booking a room together.
He, the Benedictines were awesome, when they showed up, they said you have a choice. Separate rooms or you can leave. They were *not* happy.
Glad to see the Dominicans stand up for themselves.
They did. That’s why they got targetted and taken down.
“”They just did not treat us the same as everybody else,””
Actually, they did.
The event was for newlyweds. That means to most normal people a man married to a woman. Any other combination is not a marriage, and is by definition not eligible for being “newly wed”.
So they were not treated as a married couple, which they were not. And any other not married couple would be treated the same way.
So they were in fact treated like everyone else who is NOT married would be treated at an event for people who ARE.
People who think the rest of us MUST share in their deluded fantasies crack me up.

err... perhaps it's because you aren't?
Next holiday to the Dominican Republic! :)
Now I say No to civil unions between people of the same sex. Full stop.
