SAN ANTONIO -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry remains one of the front-runners for the Republican Presidential Nomination, and depending on who you ask, many think he'll get it.
John Sharp, the recently confirmed Chancellor of Texas A&M University who ran against Perry in the 1998 general election for Lieutenant Governor, gave his take on the race while visiting Texas A&M- San Antonio on Tuesday.
"It's a full time deal running against Rick Perry, and anybody who sells him short is an idiot, because it will be a tough campaign," Sharp said.
Sharp has known Perry since his college days, where the two served in the same outfit in the Corp Cadets. "We were really good friends until we ran against each other," Sharp said.
Sharp, a Democrat, lost to Perry with 48% of the vote, during the 1998 election. During that race, the polls were tied as voters got ready to cast their ballots. Then came the flood of 1998.
"In October of 1998 or late September, this huge flood came through the area, from San Marcos and down to Victoria," Sharp said. "That was my old senate district, (I'm from Victoria) and so I'm trying to get people to get out and vote, and they're out in boat, trying to rescue their furniture and things like that."
Sharp says his loss was partly due to Perry's good timing and good luck, and believes Perry will win the Republican nomination, but stopped short of saying he will be the next president.
I have good material to work with!
whispering in your ear..... Palin is not a candidate.
Thank you for saying that.
More good sense from C. Edmund Wright!
You are clearly lost, Newbie. Are you looking for a comedy forum?
First, RINO flip-flop Romney is NOT conservative.
Second, the well-disliked Romney is Obama's minime:
Third, Gov. Palin is well to the far RIGHT of the RINO Romney.
And Romney is world's biggest GOP backstabber.
The Palmetto Scoop reported: "One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was
the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"Im told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palins people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romneys former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw
that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.
"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off .hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."
"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"
"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"
"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"
"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"
"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"
What is your problem, besides reading comprehension. I only said Palin was to the left of those others on a single issue and I said it was the ONLY issue I had disagreement with her on.
And I never pushed Romney as anything but flawed and unreliable — that is not exactly a ringing endorsement. I did say Mitt does not trash other Republicans the way McCain and Graham and Snowe and Schwarzennegar does and I said the historical use of the term was applied to those who did so. In other words, many lib and moderate republicans are rino’s, but not all are. They are simply liberals or moderates. Or in the case of some, liberal on some issues. (and yes I understand the inconsistency with that, but that’s another thread).
I never supported any trashing of Palin by anyone at any time and in fact have a long published record of Pro Palin articles and am a favorite on the Palin websites and have been often quoted on them. I still disagree with her on unions, but generally love her. I do not worship her. And until you have been quoted as a pro Palin authority by C4P and other sites, don’t come at me as some kind of anti Palin type. I am the furthest thing from it.

I do not share your hatred of Mitt and that’s fine - because you can only not vote for him once and I can only not vote for him once so you and I will cast the exact same amount of votes for Mitt: 0. I don’t begrudge your hatred of him, why can’t you be satisfied with my mere dislike of him? You call him a RINO, I call him unreliable and flawed. Why does that make me evil in your mind?
But all of this is beside the point, because I was having an intellectual and historical discussion on the origins of the term RINO as I understood it from my history and from my connections in the GOP who go back before my time. I used Mitt simply as an example. He was not the point, just an exhibit.
I also said RINO was not owned by anyone and anyone was free to apply it as they saw fit - but that the origin of the term remained the origin of the term and I still prefer the original usage.
Why does this make me evil? Why does this make me worthy of being tattled on? I know Mr. Rob hates Mitt too, and I respect his right to do so. The only positive thing I said about Mitt was that he rarely trashes other Republicans and by that I meant publicly the way McCain and Graham and Arnold do.
If he has subversive covert anti-Palin stuff going on then clearly that is not acceptable and worthy of contempt. But again, that’s not RINO so much as it is simply contemptible scum behavior. That’s worthy of another thread too.
With Obama the boot-on-the-neck cliche is just words.Perry means it triple this time: won't lose the election, won't lose Texas, won't lose America.
With the others it's personal and petty--and produces obscenities like the Bachmann-Romney tag team.
(((crickets)))
Glad to know you C. Edmund Wright.
I posted a lot of Sarah Palin threads over the years too.
I even wrote some — but I was “weak” and went to Rick Perry’s camp — actually when he stepped up and showed he was going to run and win this race and make America strong and proud again, there was never a question in my mind who to support after that.
I have never seen a weakness in you or your support of Perry. We've discussed this before and came to pretty much the same conclusions on why we switched. I have not looked back on that decision ever. I have NEVER counted my switch to weakness in the least. In fact, it was The Lord who moved me from her and to Perry once He had me do research on both of them. Through that researched I saw a marked difference in why He wanted to support Perry over Sarah.
I used “weak” with quotes because that’s what I was slammed with by some on FR when I realized what I needed to do. I have no regrets only gratitude that He has given Rick Perry the strength, and helped in his decision to take on this enormous task for us and the country (and thanks and prayers to him and his family).
Ahh..I didn’t realize you’d be accused of being weak for jumping from the fish boat to the save America ship.
Seems to me that the last time Rick Perry ran for office Sarah Palin endorsed him and campaigned for him - and by campaign, I mean really campaigned - not here obligatory pay back she did for McCain.
My point is, why is it that some Palin folks refuse to get along with Perry folks around here or even folks they think MIGHT be Perry folks.
I don’t think Palin herself would approve of that. Then again, I don’t think would approve of much of what her most hard core kool aid base does and says. And I don’t think she hates Mitt either for the record.
Yes, the flood struck a Sharp stronghold, and the difference was 51-49 or so.
Check out these returns; some 800 Republican voters sat out the 2010 governor’s and lieutenant governor’s race in Haskell County. They must not see much in Perry and Dewhurst. Perry ran way behind the unknown Railroad Commission candidate from Lee County, David J. Porter.

Scheming RINO Perry never returned the favor to Gov. Palin.
When Gov. Palin was called names and worse,
including during the Election of 2008 and later,
where WAS the Rove-created, Al Gore-bred, RINO Perry?
You are beyond help and hope: in the name of Palin you hate folks and hold grudges and beliefs that clearly Gov. Palin herself doesn’t agree with.
Rove created Perry? The men hate each other.
Where was Perry “returning the favor” in 08? Palin helped Perry in 2010, meaning Palin herself held no grudge of any kind toward Perry from 08. Why do you?
And I have no idea where all that stuff in blue is pulled from. Perry a misogynist? Come on. Misogynist governors? What is that, some new secret society?

The ONLY hate on FR originates from the RINO-bots.
FReepers are just saddened by the behavior of RINOs
and their fawning, often paid, enablers.
And your unreferenced comments differ quite a bit
from what FReepers have posted ... with references.
Must be nice to use the same material for your hats that you wrap your baked potatoes in......
