Two bioethics professors have said that they are willing to pay $11,000 for medical records that could prove that the story Rep. Michele Bachmann told about the toxicity of HPV vaccine, after Monday night's GOP presidential debate, is true.
Bachmann first raised the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine issue during the presidential debate, attacking Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who issued an executive order in 2007 mandating that girls get the HPV vaccine as part of a school immunization requirement. She questioned the state's authority to force "innocent little 12-year-old girls" to have a "government injection" that was "potentially dangerous."
The following day, she told NBC's "Today" show the story of a woman from Tampa, Florida, who approached her after the debate and said her daughter became "mentally retarded" after getting the Gardasil vaccine made by Merck.
Steven Miles, a bioethics professor at the University of Minnesota, is offering $1,000 if medical records of the woman from Bachmann's story can be produced for scrutiny by a medical professional. Following Miles' offer, his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics, offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim, Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
"These types of messages in this climate have the capacity to do enormous public health harm," Miles said of why he made the offer. "The woman, assuming she exists, put this claim into the public domain and it's an extremely serious claim and it deserves to be analyzed."
Bachmann's comments on the vaccine's toxicity have drawn heavy criticism from medical professionals who fear the damage has already been done.
"Since the vaccine has been introduced (in 2006), more than 35 million doses have been administered, and it has an excellent safety record," Dr. O. Marion Burton, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics said in a statement.
Bachmann repeated the story to several news outlets over the next 24 hours after the presidential debate, and sent a fundraising letter to supporters about the exchange she had with Perry on the debate stage. But when she was pressed by Fox News' Sean Hannity on his radio program about the story, Bachmann said she had "no idea" if it was true.
old news
EDIT TO ADD, Randall Hoven of the American Thinker tells us that Bachmann is right and the Professors should now pay up.
See here :
EXCERPT:
I ask the professors to look up a case in the CDC’s VAERS database. Specifically, VAERS number 380440. The case was reported in Oregon on February 15, 2010. The patient was 12 years old. The symptoms in that case were reported in the VAERS database as follows. (My emphases.)
Since receiving 1st dose of Gardasil, I started noticing a decline in my child’s mental health. She has become depressed and has extreme difficulty concentrating. Shortly after receiving her 3rd dose of the vaccine, she started having stomach pains. These have continued to this date. We have had an ultrasound, CT scan, blood and urine work done, still no answers.
The professors might also look up VAERS case number 396852. That case was reported in New York on August 8, 2010. The patient was 20 years old.
Was called by outside institution. Pt is admitted for acute mental status change. Physician caring for Pt states she is very disorganized in her thinking. Pt prior was normal functioning. Pt is still hospitilized in psychiatric hospital x 5 days.
The professors might also look up VAERS case number 339718. That case was reported in Indiana on February 17, 2009. The patient was 13 years old.

RE: Old news
Sure it is, but the latest developments ( see Post #3 ) are not.
I Could have posted The American Thinker article but FR does not allow me to.
all I ever heard her say was a woman said that about her own kid. I never heard her make the claim on her own.
Yes there have been stories dating back to 2008 of similiar problems.
Thanks for the update. Sometimes you have to be careful what you say and do because there are always “smarty pants” ready to pounce on you. 8-)
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has told Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat to immediately suspend the cervical cancer control vaccination programme for girls. The programme is part of a two-year study to look into the utility of a vaccine in public health programmes and acceptability of Gardasil, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine made by Merck.
Gardasil, available in medical stores across the country, is marketed in India by MSD Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd. The programme was marred by controversy after four deaths and complications among 120 girls were reported after vaccination.
The girls complained of stomach disorders, epilepsy, headaches and early menarche. Women activists fear the vaccine may impact the mental health of girls who have shown no signs of distress so far. Health ministry sources said the vaccination programme is being conducted by Gardasil, jointly with PATH, a Seattle-based NGO, ICMR and the two state governments. About 32,000 girls, aged 10-14, were to be tested in the study.

What we really need right now, is for someone with a national listenership ( e.g. Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity or Michael Savage ) to make this article public.
Maybe they could invite Randall Hoven for an interview.
This issue is very important to just let go and ought to get public hearing.
Of the three radio personalities I mentioned, I am willing to bet Michael Savage would be the one who would most want to tackle this.
the freeper attacks on Bachmann over this subject have been terrible
Guess we know where Perry’s Merck Money (tm) went!
RE: the freeper attacks on Bachmann over this subject have been terrible
MORAL: Hold the attacks until all facts are in.
You’d have to take a look at a large number of cases to glean much from this. Very common drugs like prednisone and ciprofloxacin and other antibiotics are very common drugs that cause mental status changes.
I’ve treated numerous patients who have become manic and psychotic on the above.
Three cases don’t make convincing evidence. What’s needed is a long-term prospective study to prove much of anything or numerous case reports at the very least.
Didn’t click through to the link, but perhaps you would know if they definitely linked this to the Gardisil, or if there could have been other factors at work?
Bachman should have done this research before her speech. Doing it the way she did, it looked like just another wild claim. Had she quoted from the paper you listed above, she could have at lest put it out there as something that is documented, at least as far as it goes—would still like to see if there were other factors involved.
One thing that irks me to no end is all this hysteria over any and all vaccinations. I lost a dear cousin (he was 9, I was 10) to polio, just before the vaccinations became widely available. Vaccinations do a lot of good, and not having them is going to bring a lot of horrors as some of these diseases have a place to thrive again.
Vaccinations are not evil—but the diseases they prevent are.
Problem is the wording. You can be born with “mental retardation”. You cannot acquire it after birth. It is then called brain damage. That is why they will never pay. She could produce this woman and it could be proven that the drug caused serious brain damage, but since it didn’t cause “mental retardation” they need not pay.
At least, that is the way I am reading this. I could be wrong. I was wrong once many years ago and I did not like it one bit.

Be that as it may ( and I do not disagree with what you said ), I don;t see why Michele Bachmann should be attacked if a parent told her that the vaccine affected her.
She is simply telling the interviewer what she heard. She never gave a medical opinion.
The only good justification for an attack on her is that of HONESTY. We do not know if this person is real or made up.
If real, then Bachmann is being truthful. If not, then she’s a liar.
Can anyone prove it one way or the other? What about offering money to the Woman for her to come out?
The Gardasil complication rate is at least .375%.
The Gardasil death rate is .0125% .
