FACT CHECK: Are Rich Taxed Less Than Secretaries?
AP via Yahoo News ^ | 20 Sept 2011 | Stephen Olemacher

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama makes it sound like there are millionaires all over America paying taxes at lower rates than their secretaries.

"Middle-class families shouldn't pay higher taxes than millionaires and billionaires," Obama said Monday. "That's pretty straightforward. It's hard to argue against that."

This is the same mindset that says America is broke because rich people don’t pay enough tax

100 years ago, in Russia and elsewhere, the intellectual leaders of these people were saying poor people were poor because rich people stole and controlled all the wealth-

Now the apostles of Marx and Lenin, true believers, are running the USA

The rich also pay their secretaries very well. How about a 100K salary a year to start because I know secretaries that make more than that!

"By agreeing with Obama on the grounds that this is what already happens in the real world, we make Obama look like an idiot..."

Actually that is the worst advice you can give:

"Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Lest you also be like him." (Proverbs 26:4)

Whose side are you on?

“..how much more do they want?”

Everything they can get until you have the same or less socioeconomic status than those they have deemed as having been treated ‘unfairly’. It’s their religion.

Shouldn’t someone try to explain that if you tax investment income at a higher rate you only reduce the pool that produces income the next year? At some point it becomes self-defeating. Buffett apparently is not interested in explaining it to the American people and Obama is certainly not interested in the truth. Is this beyond the understanding of most Americans? I am afraid that it may well be.

In any event we are in the mess we are in not because of lack of tax revenue but because of excessive spending.

What will it take to open peoples’ eyes? Busloads of ACORN and SEIU recruits arriving in their neighborhoods and marching up their driveways to demand social justice?

Targets of opportunity.

Does anyone know the yearly salary of Warren Buffett’s secretary. If she gets taxed at a 35% rate I’ll bet that she is making way more than $45K per year.

I would bet that Warren’s secretary makes well over 100K per year and there are likely a number of lower ranking secretaries and assistants that make between 65 and 85K per year guaranteed. Plus stock options and benefits and freebies!! Of course, if he has a personal assistant that could well be in the 250K range.

Why not just reduce the secretaries taxes if they're so high?

Warren Buffett is so full of s$$t. I heard he takes an annual salary of $100K which is a hell of a lot less than what he pays his secretary.

Why would Buffett need a salary at all when he can just collect the interest on his billions that he does not pay tax on!

Buffett avoids this problem by not having much of a salary. If I recall correctly, he pays himself the same amount a share of Berkshire-Hathaway trades at, ~$104K.

One CEO a few years ago (after Buffett said the same stupid thing about his tax rate) said “Well, if he paid himself a salary commensurate with his value to the company, he’d avoid that ‘problem’. But he does that on purpose to avoid paying taxes.”

The rule of law should be the rule of law, not a Marxist hodgepodge of penalties for success and crutches for failure.

Obama talks about the "Buffet Rule," but what we have here is "Rule by Buffoon."

I wonder as 2012 gets closer will we see more violent outbreaks intended to keep older American out of the voting booths? Will there be violence to keep whites at home?

I envision such a scenario.

Investment income is income that the investor has already paid income tax on. Capital gains tax is a double tax on income. Obama is well aware that the income tax code is such a convoluted mess that he can fool people with his BS rhetoric. Capital gains should not be taxed as all. It is stupid economic policy to penalize investment.

First, I am always on the side of truth and justice.

Perhaps this is too subtle for you. Obama says millionaires should pay as much in taxes as their secretaries. You think we should say “No!!!, we won’t go along with such an unfair plan!!!” Bingo, the general public thinks we’re in the millionaires back pocket.

Why not just say “Sure, millionaires should pay as high a percentage in taxes as ordinary middle class wage earners. We agree with that, and we think if you examine the data, you’ll see that they already pay more.” Do you get it now?
