LightSquared and Solyndra: double trouble for Obama
The Guardian (UK) ^ | 16 Sept. 2011 | Richard Adams

Posted on 09/18/2011 1:03:54 PM PDT by Clairity

Earlier this week there was the case of Solyndra, the hi-tech solar panel manufacturer that went bust last month, despite receiving more than $500m in federal loan guarantees. Yesterday it was the turn of LightSquared, mired controversy over its use of satellite frequencies for a national 4G mobile network, which critics say could disrupt the Global Positioning System (GPS) that operates millions of navigation devices, including those used by the US military and for hurricane and tornado tracking.

LightSquared's plans have been opposed by GPS users, including an industry group named Coalition to Save Our GPS, whose members include consumer GPS navigation makers Garmin and Magellan as well as the Fire Department of New York, airlines and others.

According to the coalition:

LightSquared plans to transmit ground-based radio signals that would be one billion or more times more powerful as received on earth than GPS's low-powered satellite-based signals, potentially causing severe interference impacting millions of GPS receivers – including those used by the federal agencies, state and local governments, first responders, airlines, mariners, civil engineering, construction and surveying, agriculture, and everyday consumers in their cars and on handheld devices.

Part of the controversy involves its potential interference with GPS use by the US military. The Daily Beast reported claims by Republicans in Congress that the administration sought to modify the testimony of US air force general William Shelton on the subject.

The Obama administration was willing to destroy the GPS navigation system use just to pay back some Dem donors -- do people realize the magnitude of this?

This is far beyond the Solyndra scandal, where the taxpayers "merely" lost hald a billion dollars.

The Lightsquared scandal shows that the Obama administration is willing to destroy the use of the GPS system, on which civil and military navigation is critically dependent. THAT IS TREASON. Crippling our military systems for $$$$ for Obama campaign. This is an impeachable offense.

Here is some specific info from the tests:

“In testimony before the House Armed Services Committee on Thursday, General William Shelton, head of Air Force Space Command, detailed the results of tests from earlier this year intended to quantify the effect of LightSquared’s forthcoming network on GPS.

“Aviation receivers operating as far as 7.5 miles from LightSquared transmitters completely lost GPS and were degraded out to distances of more than 16.5 miles,” Shelton said. “High precision GPS receivers such as those used for surveying and geological study requiring precise measurements were adversely affected out to 213 miles and totally lost GPS out to 4.8 miles.”

Shelton noted that the State of New Mexico believes the LightSquared network could “jeopardize 911 and public safety.”

He cautioned that Air Force Space Command’s testing was modeled from the results of a single transmitter. However, that modeling showed that the complete network of high-powered base stations envisioned by LightSquared would degrade or completely kill GPS “at distances out to dozens of miles and even extending out to operations in space.”

And this will get nothing but the chirping cricket sounds from the media. It lives in the alternate world so don’t expect this to grow legs and pursue Obama.

But since Obama is a good Democrat, everything you are saying will be minimized or ignored by the MSM and liberal leaning talking heads. You make some good points, but they will not be talked about in depth.

Just a couple of days ago, we heard that N.Korea jammed some of our militaries GPS. Could this have been LightSquared’s equipment? Did Obama give this technology to the N.Korean’s? It seems closely related and should be investigated.

Gps jamming is easy, lightsquare does not have any secret technology.

“A source familiar with the technology told Fox News that the LightSquared spectrum would be 5 billion times stronger than the military’s GPS system, rendering the military’s system almost useless.”

General Reported He Was Pressured on Testimony About White House-Backed Project, Sources Say

He did testify that testing done by various agencies responsible for military GPS positioning “demonstrated empirically that the LightSquared signals interfere with all of the types of receivers in the test.”

He added that mitigation would not be possible because redesigning the equipment to filter out interference from LightSquared “would involve substantial financial cost and likely degrade the accuracy of high performance receivers, which is critical to many key GPS users.”

The Federal Aviation Administration has also expressed worry about the LightSquared project. The FAA is in the process of moving from a radar based positioning system to a required GPS system for all aircraft, and it has “serious concerns” about how LightSquared may interfere with that, according to FAA spokesman Laura Brown.

“Gps jamming is easy, lightsquare does not have any secret technology.’

Our ENEMIES may try to jam GPS but for the US to allow a commercial entity to put up a network that would render GPS useless, and try to muzzle a general who wants to give truthful testimony about the impact — just to have some political donors make some money, IS treason.

This was an expected, perhaps even inevitable development. A couple of months ago, I bought my first GPS receiver. Something had to go wrong! (Dons tinfoil hat....)

“And this will get nothing but the chirping cricket sounds from the media. It lives in the alternate world so don’t expect this to grow legs and pursue Obama.”

Actually, Obama is bad news for the party and every Democrat in power knows it. If the power base, the Hildabeasts and George Soros tell their section of the media to take out Obama we’ll start to see real reporting. Suddenly there will be a flurry of stories; Obama’s membership in the Chicago gay club, Obama’s pro-communist term papers, and Obama’s real birth certificate to name a few. Once the MSM gets the word they’ll dog pile onto him. Obama will still try to run and with a billion dollars even the Hillary machine will have trouble. But the more they fight each other, the better for the eventual GOP candidate.

I have no experience with cellular data, wifi or anything like that so I'm pretty ignorant and that's why my question will be as stupid as it probably is.

I'm building off grid. No govt elec, water, gas, land lines, nor cellular signal.. off grid. Would this proposal (if it were real) bring full internet service to someone in my situation?

I doubt it. Other technologies could bring you internet — Direct TV had internet service, it’s satellite based, so you could access it from anywhere in the US.

But this L2 would completely cripple GPS and a huge amount of military systems, airplane nav systems and all the civil sytems depend on GPS.

A couple of months ago there was a 1 week test in the Los Vegas area. A number of ham radio APRS users were going to see if they could detect any interference. I have not heard about any formal results of the testing or of the informal ham monitoring.

State controlled American media (SCAM) headline?

President Obama and staff have no recollection of Solyndra, LightSquared
Impossible To Know How This Happened
"Too bad. I guess there's nothing we can do," says media spokesman.

The skid marks on Journalism's shorts spring into inaction. No Bush, no action!

RE: ". . . TREASON. Crippling our military systems for $$$$ for Obama campaign. This is an impeachable offense."

Sold out our military? Hell, President Clinton, Democratic donor Bernard Schwartz (head of Loral Space), lots of others sold out the whole country.. it's called "free trade".

Now if those solar panels and the Lightsquared products are to be made in Red China.. Hey! it's just "free trade."

These aged 60's spoiled brat Marxist nutcases (the Clintons) and their ideological spoiled brat offspring (Obama) can get away with anything. They are now "the Establishment".. the media, universities, entertainment. . . just about everything.

It's our turn to "Bring it all down, man."

Thanks! I'll look into the Direct TV Wildblue service. I had only been aware of Hughes satellite internet service but heard it had a bad "lag" problem. That would pretty much be unacceptable to me.
