A P-51 crashed into a vip area at the reno air races about 25. Initial reports indicate many deaths.

Me too, but I think Ron Paul is in Reno tonight. That's the only guess I can come up with.
What I don’t understand is why there was not a fireball. There had to be a lot of fuel in that plane. It seems to be a miracle. There would have been a lot more injured if there was. Another strange thing is that I didn’t see any of the firefighters and EMTs running to the scene. They seemed to be walking leisurely to the scene. Maybe they were in shock. I know I would be.

I noticed that too. I also figured everyone was in shock just after that moment.
Seriously — all the people were just milling around like they were at the state fair. Some were kneeling by the victims, but most just walking around. Maybe they were shell shocked or something.
Probably just a rumor.
In this FACEBOOK & TWITTTER universe, it’s pretty difficult to keep something like the death of a high profile individual a secret, especially if it occured in a public place...

If any of the posters here had other sources for that person's death, I'd be concerned.
The second name I saw mentioned on the other site was someone's unsourced info that a political VIP had been in Reno (no mention of attendance at the Air Show). He's not my cup of tea (not intended as a pun), but is certainly a major figure who has fans here.
Harry Reid's statement did not sound like either one of these people (both definitely known to him) had been injured or died.
I'll say a prayer for all concerned and go to bed without worries about these two.
Unless I misunderstood post #199, the mystery is solved and the person that was in question was a freeper and is now verified by his post to be ok.
Probably. Odd, isn't it, how there is more interest in the safety of famous people than for the ordinary Americans who died or are suffering tonight.

I would think the fuel in the competition aircraft is only enough to complete the race, with a bit extra for go-arounds and delays but not much.
You are probably right. My heart goes out to all those injured and killed. I hope the death toll doesn’t climb any higher but I fear it will. As far as the rescuers, it would take nerves of steel to walk up on that scene. I honestly don’t know if I could do it, knowing what I would find.
The other poster's source makes me just a touch nervous, but I'm still pretty convinced it's almost certainly not true, as it would be almost certain to be public by now if it were true.
Yep. Anything above that is just extra weight to haul around.
11:00 News channel 8 showed a VERY clear still photo of a trim-tab coming off the plane’s tail just before the pilot lost full control.
The trim-tab is not that large a part, it is part of the horizontal stabilizer.
Apparently, losing it made this plane uncontrollable.
So, it seems fairly clear that this was a mechanical failure at racing speed.
No doubt the NTSB will have more to say, in several months.
