Michele Bachmann is on the defensive about comments she made earlier this week suggesting that a vaccine against a virus linked to cervical cancer poses a danger to young girls.
"During the debate, I didn't make any statements that would indicate that I'm a doctor, I'm a scientist or that I'm making any conclusions about the drug one way or another," the GOP presidential hopeful told reporters here who questioned her about the story she told suggesting that the vaccine had caused mental retardation. Asked whether she would apologize for comments that outraged medical experts say will discourage parents from getting their children immunized, Bachmann said: "Oh, I'm not going to answer that."
During the Republican debate Bachmann attacked her rival Rick Perry for mandating vaccinations against the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) for Texas school girls - a decision that the Texas legislature later overruled.
"To have innocent little 12-year-old girls be forced to have a government injection through an executive order is just flat out wrong," she said during the debate.
After the debate, Bachmann took her critique a step further, describing in several television interviews how a tearful mother had approached her after the debate saying that her daughter "suffered mental retardation" as a result of the vaccine.

It's drawn from the fact that she claimed on national television that Gardasil causes mental retardation, whereas the usual claim from vaccinophobes is that it causes "autism," which suggests that she is confusing the two.
“Do you have a cite to an authoritative Merck study that demonstrates no connection to retardation for this specific vaccine?”
Is there a study that shows that there are no flying pink unicorns? No. If you want to say there are flying pink unicorns, you have to find a flying pink unicorn.
Or perhaps we should do away with govt mandated medicines which provide temporary protection against diseases which aren’t contracted except through sexual activity.
There have been other threads on FR about the money trail. Do your own research.
Or you could throw more hyperbole out. Whichever you prefer, most voters do prefer to live in ignorance.
Mercola is one of the biggest quacks on the internet. Sorry but this isn’t going to cut it.
I understand what you are saying, but this story is not done yet. We don’t know the ending yet. Next debate is Monday and she may bring out some folks who were effected with this vaccine. Or maybe she will say it was a mistake. We don’t know yet. If people don’t want her as President that is fine, but to bash her when she has been a 100 percent great conservative is wrong. But what is even more wrong is some people saying that she should lose her house seat. Now to me that is over the top.
So long as Medicare exists, I’d rather pay $35 to prevent cancer than $500,000 to treat it.
It’s all or nothing.
“It’s drawn from the fact that she claimed on national television that Gardasil causes mental retardation,”
incorrect, she said a woman came to her and made that claim.
yesterday you were challenging the fact that the woman saying this to Bachmann even existed.
These days, many states also require a Hepatitis shot, which is not hugely communicable either. “Public health”, you know?
Perry has admitted only that using an EO was wrong. Perry still thinks that having an opt-out instead of an opt-in is the way to go. He's wrong about that.
Bachmann was holding the cards on this issue and she blew it with her comments.
Cave to what PC?
She knowingly told a lie.
she doesn’t deserve any further consideration.
Diabetics have to worry about this all the time.
It's good to be aware.
I'm more concerned with the headaches ~ they occurred in the test subjects receiving Gardasil, but not in the control subjects receiving a placebo. These could easily be immunological reactions.
Sorry, but Dr. Mercola and Dr. Blaylock are very well respected and they footnote most everything they write.
These two professionals have nothing to gain and are true pioneers in health longevity, disease prevention, and healing protocols.
So sorry you seem so cynical, but the two men are sounding alarm. Hope Americans are listening!
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE and respect Michele Bachmann but am I imagining this or is she seeming to cozy up to Romney (politically speaking) for perhaps a VP nod? I wouldn’t hesitate to vote for her should she get the nomination for POTUS but I just wonder if my tired old eyes are deceiving me. I realize it’s a debate and Perry has a lot of questions to answer but the other night Mittens got a kiss and Perry got the boot. Maybe it’s me......
Thank you.
Tell us again about how "offended" you are. I could use another good laugh. You can't back up any of the nonsense you spew, but you're really accomplished at hurling epithets at anyone who disagrees with you. Let us know when you find some facts. In the meantime, you have absolutely zero credibility.
Oh there’s evidence, I just don’t care enough about you to go dig it out.
Nothing personal of course
