Michele Bachmann is on the defensive about comments she made earlier this week suggesting that a vaccine against a virus linked to cervical cancer poses a danger to young girls.
"During the debate, I didn't make any statements that would indicate that I'm a doctor, I'm a scientist or that I'm making any conclusions about the drug one way or another," the GOP presidential hopeful told reporters here who questioned her about the story she told suggesting that the vaccine had caused mental retardation. Asked whether she would apologize for comments that outraged medical experts say will discourage parents from getting their children immunized, Bachmann said: "Oh, I'm not going to answer that."
During the Republican debate Bachmann attacked her rival Rick Perry for mandating vaccinations against the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) for Texas school girls - a decision that the Texas legislature later overruled.
"To have innocent little 12-year-old girls be forced to have a government injection through an executive order is just flat out wrong," she said during the debate.
After the debate, Bachmann took her critique a step further, describing in several television interviews how a tearful mother had approached her after the debate saying that her daughter "suffered mental retardation" as a result of the vaccine.

I like her more and more.
Sure, its dishonest to say he only received $5,000 (his number provided during the debate) when there are numerous other donations from people very closely connected to the company.
yes I find that offensive and dishonest
“The thing is that doctors can have different opinions.”
I’m talking about the question: does gardasil cause mental retardation? You don’t go on TV say “Yes, I think so. I read somewhere on the internet...”
No, you ask an expert and only if she says there is a link then you can tell the rest of the country that there is a real problem with it.
You sure are distracted by it. Why bother posting on this issue if you are just some uninterested party. To fill you in, the comment you are defending that Bachmann made puts her squarely in the kook Hollywood left crowd. The folks like Jenny McCarthy who have been on a crusade that vaccines cause Autism even though the only evidence is one thoroughly discredited piece in a Brit medical journal. The man who wrote that article lost his job and is under investigation in the UK for his boldfaced lies.
I agree. Gardasil is a total distraction. This is an economy election and Obummer is the enemy, but back to my original point, why would you want one of our own guys to double down on stupid just to seem principled.
Their posting history is very well known; they defend anything Perry has said or done regardless how liberal it may have been and they attack any conservative who disagrees.
They would fit right in at DU where advocating for liberal causes is the norm. Unfortunately, they have infested this conservative forum and are using it to push their liberal candidate.
That's a Post of the Day candidate right there, PG.
The perrywinkle hate continues at full ahead, no brakes, burn the bridges. Worried about the conduct of a man that thinks your daughters life is worth less than $30000: big government knows best.
No it hasn’t. My nephew, fine before vaccine, autistic after. The researchers “disproving” the claims are eugenicists too. Go ahead and vaccinate your children if you’re comfortable with it, I don’t blame anyone who does. Don’t force me to vaccinate mine. At best, Perry made a big mistake with that order and it reveals something troubling about him. At worst, he did it for money.
Go to CDC or FDA not drug.com for the same information.
not getting much traction on that $30,000 garbage.
At the same time Michelle probably shouldn't have said anything ~ after all we wouldn't to stir the chickens up when the fox is inside the pen.
That, btw, is not to argue that Gardasil causes retardation ~ but Merck already has some character flaws ~ and I'd like to know if they've been repaired satisfactorily before I uncritically accept their claims on anything.
What is your evidence that she has done what you are claiming?
I don’t know. The more I know about Rep. Bachman, the less I’m liking her. I think she’s another big promiser. And I would agree with you about the Gardasil, but she staked out an idiotic position and now she won’t qualify it. Either she doesn’t UNDERSTAND the issue, or she is deliberately blowing smoke to confuse the issue. Either way, she needs to STFUp.
No, no, Rick Perry is Romney’s stalking horse!
Any vaccine has a few people who are "sensitive" yet they gave the small pox vaccine anyway, they gave the polio vaccine anyway, the measles and mumps the same. Perhaps we should do away will all medications and vaccines and go back to people dying by the age of 40. Sure would solve the SS problem.
Just telling us Real Doctors Say doesn't cut it.
Instead of offering your "I'm offended" and "it's dishonest" drama, why not list right here on this thread all the money Merck gave to Rick Perry, after 2007, as a quid pro quo for his EO on Gardasil. Either you have the information readily available or you're talking out of your _ _ _.
Which is it?
Do you also believe that Dick Cheney started the war in Iraq to enrich Halliburton? How many layers of tin foil do you wear on your head?
Mercola?
Not for facts on this.
In the new Obama Army a member of the platoon with HPV can infect his platoon-mates with impunity ~ and if they complain he can get them booted out of the service.
