While greeting a Latino audience to support her husband’s speech about opportunities for Hispanics, Michelle Obama decided an exotic gown was in order. As President Barack Obama spoke at the black-tie event, the First Lady looked stunning in the strapless raw-silk dress by U.S. designer Chris Benz. She appeared to be inspired by an Amazonian peacock as she sashayed into the Washington Convention Center with matching emerald hued earrings and classic black heels. And Mrs Obama seemed delighted with the President’s pledge to put more money in the pockets of Latino workers by the look of her ear-to-ear grin on...

I agree with you, she’s definitely overweight.
I don’t think much of the dress, it looks like a cheap plastic covering. That’s definitely a wide load stuffed into it. Is that belt supposed to make her look slimmer or fatter, I can’t tell which.

How did Spain, which probably oppressed the ancestors of today's Hispanics/Latinos more than anyone else end up muscling in on the victimfest/pityparty?
If the attendees at this Hispanic Heritage Month kick-off are typical of those at similar galas outside the Beltway (I attended several in the Chicago area, mostly in the 90s), the Spanish royals didn't have an entirely enjoyable evening. There is a huge amount of resentment against Spain on the part of many American Hispanics, and I wouldn't put it past some of these Obama supporters to be outright rude.
As to why the royals were invited ... some in the American Hispanic community have no difficulty recognizing the Spanish elements of Latin American culture (I have my doubts about the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, though). Plus the Spanish government's cultural arm (which I can't remember the name of) is very active in the U.S. They may well have contributed in some way (providing entertainment, underwriting some of the cost, etc.) -- if the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute was desperate enough for funding.

Actually, it’s one of her better-looking outfits.
Unfortunately, she’s so tall and ungainly that few pieces look attractive on her.
