RUSH: I'm gonna play you a couple sound bites from last night. Mitt Romney appeared with Ted Baxter on The O'Reilly Factor and he was asked about individual mandate as part of Romneycare, and the problem that he has with Romneycare being so close to Obamacare, and still sticking with Romneycare. The question was, "How are you gonna convince conservatives who are suspicious of you -- not all of them, but some of them -- because you did the individual mandate in Massachusetts about health care, conservatives, that drives 'em nuts, they say that the government, state and federal, have no right to force anybody to buy anything. How are you going to convince those people that they should support you?"
ROMNEY: The government, of course, has a lot of mandates, and I know folks don't like that, but mandates kids go to school, mandates they have to have auto insurance if you have an automobile. And my conservative friends say, "Well, we don't have to have automobiles," and it's like, well, what state do you live in? Of course you have to have automobiles in this nation, and the plan that we put in place was one that was put together by Republicans and Democrats, it works for Massachusetts --
RUSH: Okay, that's all we need. Hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it. Did you guys hear that the way I heard that? You have to have auto insurance if you have an automobile, "And my conservative friends say, 'Well, we don't have to have automobiles.' And it's like, what state do you live in? Of course you have to have automobiles in this nation." Now, folks, play it again, and you listen to it yourself and see what you think.
ROMNEY: The government, of course, has a lot of mandates, and I know folks don't like that, but mandates kids go to school, mandates they have to have auto insurance if you have an automobile. RUSH: All right, that's it, that's it, that's it, that's it. The question is not can we get along without cars in America. The way he phrases this, "Of course you have to have automobiles in this nation." Of course you have to have water. No, everybody doesn't have to have an automobile, and then everybody doesn't have to have automobile insurance. And Romney says, "Of course you have to have automobiles in this nation." I want to be real charitable here, but I don't know, folks. It's hard to look the other way at that one.

I am equally surprised at the level of venom directed at Perry over issues like Social Security from people on our own side. These idiots spent the whole debate carrying Milts water while the name Obama was barely mentioned. What a bunch of dopes, and that includes my man Santorum, who felt his time better spent slamming Perry on an issue that no one cares about like Gardasil and not hitting Obama on the economy. It is an economy election for crying out loud.
“Maybe it’s his underwear!!!
“Someone ask him if it’s, “Boxers or Briefs”.
........................
Someone ask him if it’s, “Boxers or Briefs or Magic?”
Slick Mitt should just take a page from Slick Rick's play book and claim his scheme to have more government control over people's lives was a victory for "states rights" ...
Up here in Massachusetts, we believe in STATES RIGHTS and I was just standin' up against the Bush administration's attempt to impose their will on us and DENY the people of Mass. their God-given right to health care! Massachusetts can determine what's best for their citizens better than the feds can! DON'T MESS WITH MASS! Abolish the 17th amendment and we can be rid of Scott Brown, too! Yee-haw!
Gardasil was not 'voted on and passed' by both houses. Perry signed an executive order mandating the vaccine, the legislature then passed a bill (HB 1098) to overturn it.
There is no federal law requiring auto insurance.
On his radio show earlier today, Lou Dobbs praised Romney’s answer as being forthright and unequivocal.
Yes, except even Huntsman was to the right of Perry on the executive order for Guardasil, and Romeny to the Right of Perry on the border, "Of course we need a fence".
“There is no federal law requiring auto insurance.”
I know. I didn’t say there is.
The fence issue isn’t what people think. Perry supports some fence, but if you go toward West Texas along the border you’d be building fence over mountains and through ravines. The same thing is true in NM and AZ. A fence needs to be part of the solution, but there is no way around needing a lot more boots on the ground, as well as recon drones and other technology. Then you need to make it as close to impossible for illegals to be hired, stop cities from being de jure or defacto “sanctuary cities” and do everything possible to cut off social welfare benefits. Deportations also need to be swift and certain.
A few radically originalist SCOTUS justices are sorely needed, too, to clean up the mess by shutting down the litigation strategies by the ACLU and La Raza.
You are comparing the errant, failing Romneycare that has messed up health care in Massachusetts with an opt out vaccine in Texas? Really? Really? Completely different issues.
Romney is a statist. What a surprise. /s
You have to have auto insurance if you have an automobile,
That tired crap AGAIN? You have to have liability insurance to protect other people from your screw-ups, NOT insurance on your car...
If you’re paying on a vehicle loan, the creditor will require insurance on the vehicle; but, if the vehicle is owned outright you do not have to have insurance on it. It’s the State that requires liability insurance if you want to drive any vehicle.
Mitt obviously still believes in the individual mandate. Good for him not to flip flop.
Now when is switching to the democratic primary?
Worth repeating! Well stated.
ff
It’s called blind ambition.
Next thing you know, Mitt’s going to be saying, “Some of my best friends are conservatives.”
To give a strange answer first you have to be a strange answer-man
and Willie Mitty fits the bill...
That should read "Mitt's dad ex-Michigan guv George V." [blush]
But the rest of post #35 still stands.
