GOP Debate: Rick Perry Booed Over Texas Immigration Law
ABC News ^ | Sep 12, 2011 | Amy Bingham

“The American way is not to give taxpayer-subsidized benefits to people who have broken our laws and are here in the United States illegally,” Bachmann said at the CNN/Tea Party Express debate.

Perry defended the law, saying it was a states’ rights issue.

“We were clearly sending a message to young people that, regardless of what the sound of their last name is, that we believe in you,” Perry said.

Last name is not the issue at all. I believe illegals should not be in school in the first place. In state tuition is is adding insult to injury.

Texas can't complain about the Feds doing this to them though.

I don’t think Perry had a really good reply in his bag to defend his dream act, but making it about “last names” is characteristic of Identity Politics, not conservatism.

Perry kept repeating the “last name” line.

The fact is they are here illegally.

If the state of Texas wants to give people who are here illegally, “in state tuition”, they should stop charging “out of state tuition” to legal American citizens from any state of the union.

Perhaps he could say “in Texas, nobody pays out of state tuition, even if their name isn’t of Hispanic origin.”

Perry answered as speaking for the employers of Texas who hire illegals and from whom Perry receives campaign cash.

Perry = Crony Capitalist.

America is supposed to be a nation of laws, not of contributors to campaigns.

Laws favoring wealthy contributors are enforced.

Laws threatening wealthy contributors are ignored.

I can understand that Texas can't afford to give in state tuition rates to the whole country, but a dream act is amnesty's foot in the door.

Well, on that note, we have no candidate. Guess I will stay home.

Oh wait, tried that in 2008.

The kernel..the nugget of it all is taxes, regulation, and immigration

The story of American jobs and labor is deeply intertwined with predatory Federal, state and local taxation and regulation....

South Koreans sleep soundly on their border with NORKS because of American Taxpayer dollars and the American GI.

Why can’t Texans, New Mexicans, Arizonans and Californians?....BECAUSE

Illegal immigration is THE KEY to the perpetuation of the status quo in DC......

Predatory tax and regulatory policies-actions that basically serve to perpetuate and grow governments-leave what business is left in the country seeking disposable labor.

Illegal Labor is the Feds out for preserving the status quo regarding Taxes and Regulation. Interestingly, that is WHY the Feds encourage in-state tuition etc for illegals under-the-table -their presence providing disposable labor allows Federal, State and local regulatory and tax excess in the status quo to continue

Immigration is the ultimate litmus test as to the candidates in question commitment to meaningful regulatory and tax reform. If they are wishy-washy on the subject...they have no real intent to disturb the DC status quo...no matter how big their cowboy hat and six-gun.

Real”leadership” is that which will place Flyover Country’s interest ahead of the Feds....haven’t yet seen anything meaningful anywhere from anybody to indicate that might happen. We have just one more election cycle to make that happen via rule of law. Otherwise its the end of the run for America.

We are calling him on it now.

Your last name can be Gahootinbollock, but if you are not American why should we help pay for your college education, when we have thopusands of American kids who could use that money and that spot the illegal is taking up in college.

I like Perry, but I have a real problem with his stance in the area of illegals. We got the same crap from W which soured me on him. We’re a country and a country has borders or we’re not.

I could not agree more as my front yard is 100 yards from the border. He has been horrible on illegal aliens. He panders to them just as bad as Obama or McCain. How people can think this guy is our conservative dream is lost on me.

Patience. We’ve still got five months before the first primary vote is cast.

Perry kept repeating the “last name” line.

Sounds like an attempt to turn it into a race issue.

I cannot and WILL NOT support perry or his vision of illegal alien invaders... they kill... maime and destroy... but they can lay sheetrock and install tuck and roll. Bottom line... illegal is illegal and he can't keep his states rights illegals in Texas... some have come to Mississippi and when they do... crime and destruction of property and life follows. They are also killing our economy.

He’s governor of a large state with a huge border. The state was overrun with illegals long before he became governor. He was correct in saying it’s the fed’s job to protect the border. He called for boots on the ground and air cover.

There are issues with every candidate but the GOP at this point must make sure that the candidate chosen doesn't have more issues than Obama.

The only one even close to Obama on having issues is Romney.

Can Parry and Romney!

I saw Palin, Bachmann, and Cain on TV last night. Everyone of them is better than Perry or Romney.

Elect Cain, Bachmann, or Palin!

That’s disingenuous.

States have no ability on their own to secure their borders and have no authority to deport anyone. And they certainly don’t have the wherewithal to keep them in the state from which they entered illegally!
