LIMA, Peru -- Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the disappearance of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, was due in court in Peru on Monday over the murder of a local woman.

The Dutchman is accused of robbing and murdering 21-year-old Stephany Flores, who was found dead in his Lima hotel room in May 2010. He was arrested after fleeing over the border to Chile and has been held in Lima's notorious Castro Castro prison ever since.

Prosecutors and Flores' family are seeking a 30-year prison term, arguing that this would be a "just penalty."

I am surprised the girl's family feels the 30-yr penalty is a "just penalty"? This murderer deserves the death penalty.

“This murderer deserves the death penalty.”

He probably needs counseling - this is the second time he has seen dead people.

Just? I think that binding him and burying him in sand and dripping honey over his head and leaving there for the ants would be a “just” penalty.

Yes, he should be put to death...if the scriptures teach us that.

...their client acted in "a fit of rage" after Flores accessed files on his computer.

Yeah. I generally kill anybody who accesses files on my computer. Great defense.

That’s the harshest sentence offered there. They don’t have the death penalty. But it is moot. He won’t survive very long there once he becomes a “regular”.

Peru abolished the death penalty some years ago.

Death penalty in Peru is reserved for killing police officers and certain acts of terrorism.

30 years is the worst you can get for most murders. But it will be a long 30 years.

Or maybe very short. Peru tends to be very fond of their sports stars. Especially when they are also pretty and female.

Peru does not have the death penalty for murder, unless it is murder committed during the course of a terrorist attack/coup attempt.

Peru does not even have life imprisonment for murder, either. 30 years is the maximum allowable by law.

It's a good defense if you are trying to get your client acquitted of premeditated murder, which carries a higher sentence than a spur-of-the-moment killing.

Thirty years in a Peruvian jail IS a death sentence. Interesting background on Peruvian prisons.

Attorney: Van der Sloot trial likely in 2012

LIMA, Peru (AP) — The attorney for the family of a Peruvian woman allegedly slain by Joran van der Sloot says it appears likely the young Dutchman’s murder trial will not begin until next year.

Attorney Edward Alvarez spoke after a hearing Monday on the prosecution’s recommendation that Van der Sloot be sentenced to 30 years in prison in the May 2010 killing of Stephany Flores.

Alvarez says the victim’s family considers the proposed sentence too lenient. The family contends Van der Sloot planned the murder to rob Flores. Van der Sloot’s attorney says the slaying was not premeditated.

The reason why some one hasn't taken out Joran van der Sloot is he's been held in isolation away from the prison population. if he goes to trial and is convicted, he'll not get the kid gloves treatment. He will be in the general prison population and I expect his chances of seeing the end of his 30-year sentence will be remote.

Van der Sloot did try to get out of the country and into Dutch jurisdiction, but he failed. He knew he was dead meat when the Peruvians captured him.

Our loathsome murdering scumbag is going to regret this last murder. The victim's father is highly connected in the Peruvian government and is well respected. Bad move, Mr. van der Sloot in making such a powerful enemy by killing his daughter.
