Cyndi Lauper fluffed her performance of the US national anthem this weekend, as part of a 9/11 memorial at the US Open. The 58-year-old singer was performing The Star-Spangled Banner following a moment of silence for victims of the terrorist attacks in the US – but failed to sing the words correctly.
"O'er the ramparts we watched," Lauper sang, "as our flag was still streaming." While this sounds perfectly plausible, the real lyrics use more complicated grammar – and a fancier adverb: "O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming."

Good Grief ... YOU sing at an internationally broadcast ceremony, and see if you get every single nuance of the national anthem correct ... then, feel free to critize someone else.

The anthem is so bourgeois, comrade.
Goodness, I think its been years since I heard a celebrity sing our anthem, and sing it well. And by well, I mean sing it in such a way that inspires us with pride and humility and love. Step One: learn the gosh-darn lyrics!
Its getting so that performers should be certified to sing the anthem at public events. Every time someone flubs the song, its a slap in the face to those it honors. I’d rather hear a tone-deaf military hero sing, than a professionally trained opera singer stumble through it with zero thought for what it means.
That, and she never impressed me as being the brightest bulb in the chandelier to begin with.
True enough. But some of us are tired of having nitwit celebrities lecture us on our stupidity in supporting Republicans, or owning guns, or not living a "green" enough lifestyle or bitterly clinging to out religion. When the brainless but haughty stumble, shall we not laugh?

While watching that, I can see that she thought she was delivering an emotional experience to the people. At least that is what she said.

Nope sorry, won’t fly. I bet my last dollar she would be too embarassed to show her face if she flubbed “True Colors” on an international stage in front of all her GLAAD friends. Dollars to donuts she rehearsed for the national anthem a total of 17 minutes.

LOL. Yeah, because it was a walk-on performance? Or like an open-mike night at a local bar. No standards apply, no preparation needed.
