Mets Won't Wear NYPD, FDNY Hats.

NEW YORK -- New York Mets players considered violating a Major League Baseball edict prohibiting them from wearing hats of various New York City first responders during Sunday night's game against the Chicago Cubs, but ultimately opted to adhere to the order from the commissioner's office, player rep Josh Thole said.

MLB denied the Mets' request to wear the baseball caps despite the policy. Joe Torre, MLB's executive vice president for baseball operations, told The Associated Press in a phone interview the decision was made to keep policy consistent throughout baseball.

"Certainly it's not a lack of respect," Torre said. "We just felt all the major leagues are honoring the same way with the American flag on the uniform and the cap. This is a unanimity thing."

MLB sucks.
Let the men show their respect.

...as he disrespected the first responders.

I think an exception should have been made in this case. MLB has no problems with the team wearing “Los Mets” on their uniform.

MLB or NFL...just politically correct garbage from the safe, corporate offices. Don’t expect pro sports to do anything to make themselves a target of the leftist gestapo.

Joe Torre is an embarrassment to New York City. I hope his face never graces the NY Yankees Hall of Fame...

Say what you will about Stephen King, in his Dark Tower books, the alternate universe he creates slips into a state of torpor and melancholia largely because its inhabitants "forgot the faces of their fathers." A recurring theme througout the books is how the handful of protagonists that seek to set things right are motivated by remembering the faces of their fathers.

King intuitively got this veery right. Nations, a peoples, and indeed civilizations, are strengthened and unified by their history, folktales, legends and common identity. The efforts to so arduously scrub and sanitize the images and memories of 9/11 are IMHO, a deliberate effort to disconnect us from who we are.

I'd like to see them try to ban this uniform. They wouldn't be able to give away tickets to the military or retired veterans.

So why didn’t they give the players that wanted to a few minutes to come out onto the field pre-game wearing the hats and carrying flags to show their respect?

They could always change them when the game started.

Too much to ask?

Certainly it's not a lack of respect

It's a lack of money. Pay them enough they'll even change the name of their stadium.

Bud Selig is an ass and a disgrace. He should be treated to a one-way ticket to Iran, where they don’t have baseball.

“Joe Torre is an embarrassment to New York City. I hope his face never graces the NY Yankees Hall of Fame...”

don’t expect much from entertainers. There are very few role models in sports though Tim Tebow would be an important exception.

I’m with Joe Torre on this decision. Why is it necessary for ballplayers to wear a different hat other than their team hat? What purpose does it serve? I’d rather see them draw a line in the sand then start a precedent of kowtowing to every special interest group. Next they’ll be made to wear NAMBLA hats. Stay with the program Joe!

Looks to me, after reading this thread, that there’s a lot of whiny baseball haters.
