Friday Trivia Question: When was the last time a President presided over 2 recessions in his 1st term
Ummmm.... Never?
A president can’t preside over a second recession until the first ends.
Hoover . . . or Roosevelt?
These aren’t really “two recessions” - they are one “Depression” (which may turn out not to be the right word for it either).
I think you’re right. It’s never happened before until now.
Eisenhower.
Even more to the point:
When was the last time a president presided over 2 recessions and 0 recoveries in his 1st Term?
Nope, I’m wrong. Ike had one in each term.
Found it. Grover Cleveland. Panic of 1893 (1/1893-6/1894) and Panic of 1896 (12/1895-6/1897.)
Half a cigar. I think that was his 2nd term. FRD might also qualify for what happened from ‘37 to ‘41.
You’re right. It was the second of his split terms.
FRD might also qualify for what happened from 37 to 41....................................... The wars in Europe and Pearl Harbor? Nahh, that got him out of the Depression.
EXACTLY!!! Our ‘recession’ didn’t end just because obama SAID it did!
Things have gone from bad to worse EVER since he stepped into office.
-yes, I know things were heading that way before he was elected...but still. We’re in a downward slump and gaining speed in that direction.
Note how each “panic” was about six months long—when the government didn’t try to fix it?
How about Harding? He took office in 1921 during a recession that started a year earlier. That one ended in July of 1921. Then in May of 1923 a second recession hit. He died in office during August of that year. He came in at the end of one and left at the start of one but, he did serve during two recessions.
The America of pre-1913 was operated the way the founders intended.
I'm surpised to learn that Harding had a recession at the end of his term. Although it is interesting note that Wikipedia doesn't reference unemployment statistics for Harding's recession. I'll bet that's because the feds didn't start keeping unemployment statistics until Hoover was President.
