U.S. POSTAL SERVICE MAY BE FORCED TO CLOSE FOR THE WINTER
the Blaze ^ | September 5, 2011 | Becket Adams

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is going to have to find a way to make up for hemorrhaging financial losses (which has already rendered them incapable of making a $5.5 billion payment to its employee healthcare plan by the Sept. 30 due date) or face the possibility of closing shop for the winter.

Their unique situation raises two questions: first, how did it come to this? Second, how should it be addressed?

USPS bleeds money. They are set to default very soon.
Couple that with the asinine rules congress set's agaisnt the USPS (can't close individual postal offices to save money, can't suspend sat. delivery). Its not so much "us" as it is Congress that is meddling in the "pseudo" private sector that is USPS.

Shut down for the winter? That’s absurd, it’s just their way of begging for a bailout, this entity needs to be privatized, you can bet if taken over by the private sector all the dead weight would be launched and this would run as a fine tuned instrument.

How can legitimate elections be held locally or nationally without the USPO? Think Nov 2012 especially.

Congress need only to allow the postal service to move to five day delivery.

Every other day delivery.

The reason I went full internet route on bills, bill paying, checks etc. is to save on postage, trips to the post office, trips to the bank. I rarely if ever need cash any more. Even Taco Bell now accepts credit cards. Also, I can schedule paying my bills on the last due date instead of mailing several days ahead through snail mail. I also get instant receipt.

Over 15+ years I have never had a problem with internet transactions, but several problems with mail deliveries.

How about the old fashioned way of going to the voting booth?
Mail voting is susceptible to much fraud.

I was on an "out of town" business trip to Florida when a local election occurred in the Pocatello, ID area. My wife sent my ballot in an overnight FedEx envelope. I voted and fired the envelope back overnight to my wife. She dropped it in the local registrar of voters box at the court house.

I operate an online photography business. 90% of my deliveries are done via first class mail. My shipping costs will essentially triple.

In addition, my clients that use PO boxes are going to be screwed.

Also, 90% of my clients pay me with a check.

While most of those “Bill Pay” checks are sent vie ACH transfer, many of them end up as printed checks that are delivered through the mail.

Once people get a sense of what it will cost to deliver a package, they will beg for the return of the post office.

Actually I have a part time business were most of what I buy/sell goes via the Postal system. Since I can print my postage at home and have the USPS pick it up at the mail box, this would be a big inconvenience if they were to shut down.

Isn’t delivery of mail one of the feds constitutional duty. More so than the hundreds of other things the fed gets involved in...

first, how did it come to this?

This guy is dumb and stupid.

When you have pensions promised that are unsustainable...the end is known. You can't have people retiring at 50 yrs old...promised 80% of their pay for the rest of their lives.

Yes it is mandated that universal service be provided, bit it does not specify frequency so Congress could eliminate a day or two of service.
If US postal service goes away imagine the Teamsters delivering voting ballots.

Not a duty of the government. But it is an enumerated power that was granted to Congress, as per Article 1, Section 8:

“The Congress shall have power ... To establish Post Offices and post Roads”

If Congress chooses not to exercise that power, then I would imagine that private industry will pick up the slack.

I use the USPS.....and frankly I cannot complain. I've shipped many, many items with them..and I've had very, very few problems.

That said....I also pay many bills via the web.

I live in a very rural area.....We have USPS offices in extremely tiny towns. They need to close them. The carriers could take up the slack in those areas.

And I'd be fine with 4 or 5 day service.

But I'm guessing the Postal Union....will have the final say.
