CYPRESS, TX (KTRK) -- Charges could soon be filed against a dog owner whose pet mauled an infant to death in northwest Harris County over the weekend.

Deputies were called to a home in the 16500 block of Cypress Bridge near Barker Cypress and Huffmeister around 9pm Saturday. Two-week-old Brayden McCollen had been in a swing in a room, alone with the 100 pound dog.

An adult was home at the time with three other children. That person heard the loud noises and ran into the room, but investigators say Brayden had already been badly injured.

The newborn was airlifted to an area hospital, but did not survive.

There is some discrepancy on what kind of dog attacked the baby. Animal control officials say the dog is a Pit Bull. The Harris County Sheriff's Office report has it listed as a Labrador retriever mix, with further specification.

The dog was taken by animal control and will be quarantined for the next 10 days. His fate will be decided after that. According to the family, the dog had never showed any signs of aggression before.

This case is being referred to the Harris County District Attorney's Office to see if charges will be filed.

Always the same asinine excuse! The owner needs to be jailed for this. There is no excuse, period!

I am sure that some pro-pitbull person will be along shortly to tell us how either

A) The owner of the dog is to blame (ie; trained the dog to eat babies)

B) The baby started it.

I trust animal control over the police in determining breed as I trust the police over animal control to tell me what is a felony and what is a misdemeanor.

That's a bad mix.

They'll tear your arm off, then expect you to throw it for them...

Animal Control Officers don’t know what a Pit Bull looks like.

That about right?

Quite possible. I think I would tend to believe the HCSO on this one.

Really! Now then that being said, the lab mix could have some pit in him, maybe giving the dog a simmilar shape head. Pit Bulls, American Stafordshire Terriers, do not get up to a hundred pounds.

People like this need their heads examined! What genius leaves a two week old infant alone with ANY 100 lb dog? Good or bad ... A dog is still an animal and should never be left alone with small children.

I’m not a parent and even I know this.

See, even a LAB can turn feral when it has some PB in its bloodline .

a pit bull in the home with a small child is just as dangerous as a loaded gun laying in reach of a toddler.

Huh? I have seen pits that size. I would trust animal control over the police in IDing the dog.

The only ones who should be allowed to own pit-bulls are the US Army.
