GOP consultant Mark McKinnon says that the editor of a major newspaper told him, "We plan to declare war on Rick Perry and do all in our power to crush him."
Mr. McKinnon was outraged. "No pretense of integrity, professionalism or of unbiased news gathering," he wrote in Investors' Business Daily.
But I doubt he was surprised. This is what the "mainstream" media did to Sarah Palin in 2008, and what likely is in store for anyone Republicans nominate.
But liberals will go after the Texas governor with special venom because he is anti- intellectual, prays in public, takes the Constitution seriously and sometimes carries a handgun, Walter Shapiro wrote in The New Republic.
"It's almost as if Perry's political persona was constructed by bundling together all the fears and phantoms in the left-wing anxiety closet." he said.

How can you “smear” someone with their own record?
These Perry protection threads are getting hard not to just laugh at.
>> “Isnt Mark McKinnon a lefty?” <<
.
Yes, but then so is Perry.
>> “I’m a victim of smear!” <<
.
His record smeared all over his Texas Two-stepping.
Oh, so the dog is really the one running?
Perry, the open borders, gardasil whore?
That’s conservative?
The “instate” tuition whore?
The Hillarycare supporter?
That is conservative?
How much do you charge for long sleeve shirts?
Your fear is showing, n00b.
Freepers will decide what articles they choose or not to read....Perry needs vetting and his history shown...you can make all the excuses for him you want...but the facts are there. BTW....Next time you use my name in a post do the courtesy of pinging me as most due and the standard here on FR. Instead of just throwing it about with your own comments.
caww - I did ping you twice on two seperate threads. You never responded to me. MestaMachine posted links concerning a legitimate issue with Perry and one that causes me concern. I have commented on it previously and it appears that Perry got caught up in the same wave of Islamic multiculturalism the GOP fancied at that time.
I am not a fan. However, in fairness Perry has had more time on the big stage to make mistakes than any other candidate out there. Reagan made more than a few too. In context, there was a big rush post 9/11 by many politicians to try to encourage tolerance by all Americans toward moderate Muslims. The stories MestaMachine posted concern things that occurred in 2004 and 2005. It was consistent with what other Republicans did. Candidate Palin echoed McCain on the issue too but that was only 2 years ago.
That was my point last night. The same standard should be applied evenly. Context is also helpful given that many of the criticisms thrown at Perry are rather dated. Our opinions on many subjects evolve and politicians are no different. I suspect during the nomination process we will hear more from every candidate on the issue of Islam. That will carry more weight than what he/she did years ago.
However, the sinister sounding post you made regarding an investment by Bahrain into an Austin based publically traded internet company has no relevance that I can find. The fact that Perry is friends with the CEO is not a big deal and Bahrain is one of our best allies in that region. They have been investing all over America... not just Texas.
Tempest posts his crap and does not respond. He seems to enjoy making people angry and does not hang around to defend what he posted. This is your chance to tell me why Perry’s friendship with a CEO for a publically traded company that Bahrain invested in matters. You are obviously insinuating something so come out and say it. Defend it.
I would also love to hear you defend Palin’s support for McCain who is the poster child for the wrongs of the GOP. McCain’s stances on almost every issue are far to the left of Perry’s yet Palin just campaigned for him a year ago.
Furthermore, I don’t understand why Palin would even like McCain after the way he and his campaign staff treated her. This causes me more concern than most of the crap being posted about Perry on here. I am also a Palin fan but her obvious blindspot for McCain is troubling. I understand that he gave her a shot but he did not do her any favors during or after that I could see and she does not owe him anything. His policies lost and they don’t share stances on issues.
There are many Muslim Americans and more than a few Muslim Texans. We can all decide for ourselves what Governor Perry’s actions meant in context. Again, why does it matter to this conversation that Bahrain invested in an Austin based technology firm?
There has been a pattern on every Perry thread of drive-by’s. It is rare that anyone hangs around to discuss the issue in a rational and fair manner. That is what I would like to see on this website. I have an open mind so let’s talk about it.
Palin in many ways is a moderate, and said she would support mccain position on amnesty. McCain and she lost.
Thank you for an honest answer to my question. I don’t think Palin is a moderate but she seems to follow McCain on some controversial issues.
Discussions about this topic are verboten where the perry supporers aree concerned. The twists and turns and deliberate confusion, not to mention downright nastiness, make it very difficult to hav any kind ofrationalconverstion whenthey will not evendmittheproblem exists. And it does. Thisprogram in several Texas school districts has not ended as they would have you believe.
Perry’s association and friendship with aga khan go back to his days as lt. governor...and there are other associations that are worrisome as well.
Here are the urls from past recent *conversations*. There is a lot of information about this on these threads.

You must not have been keeping up. Palin has been refusing to accept mccain’s calls for some time, and she does NOT agree with him on amnesty. At ALL.
She paid him back for choosing her as VP. And it’s over now.
I know she is not calling him back now. However, it is just as relevant to discuss her alignment with McCain a year ago as it is to discuss things that Perry did over 5 years ago.
That was my point. I was extremely disappointed with Palin for campaigning for McCain last year like many other conservatives. Despite this, I love the fact that she is a complete outsider who is feared by RINO’s and Leftists alike. I will support her if she enters but her support of McCain last year flies in the face of what she preaches.
I have read the threads on Perry’s relationship with Khan and his multicultural foray into Islam acceptance. I am disappointed with it because it does not mesh with my opinions. However, it is mitigated a little bit by the fact that Khan is much more moderate than most Muslims and this politically correct silliness was all the rage. I still think he was wrong. It’s a little different for a Governor than a private individual though. The best figure I could find via google showed that Texas had the 5th highest number of Muslims in 2000 (115,000). That is 115,000 citizens and Perry is a politician. While this apparent pandering is distasteful, it does not change my opinion that Perry could make a good President.
I do appreciate you posting a link to a legitimate issue and FReepers will have to make up their mind regarding Perry’s stance on Islam. I suspect whoever the nominee is will be asked about it ad nauseum.
Appreciate the links, m’Lady. It is getting difficult to read factual things about Perry because of having to wade through the nasty defenders of the man at FR. Some of them are so nasty it makes one think maybe they’re here to ‘condemn with faint praise’, or be nasty pretending to be Perry supporters and hope the disgust factor drapes on Perry.
Billionaires never do.
This, along with his MHC curriculum, and his bff Aga. So yea. I am.
If perry had ended this five years ago, I would not be bringing it up at all. aga khan SAYS he is moderate, but he does not worship with his followers, nor has he ever. He is a PRACTICING wahabist suni muslim.
Keep making up crap and throwing it against the wall and hoping it sticks. Taking cue from the mainstream left wing media I see.
That happens to be the truth.
