You have no clue what it would take to build a fence a long the TX-Mexico border!

It's 1200 to 1500 miles long...and all kinds of terrain. Have you ever been to Big Bend?

It would be a stupid waste of $$$...and wouldn't work!

It works great in California, but what would be better than a fence is two things. First is a eliminating the opportunity for illegal employment. Second is pulling the federal road funding for states that either give illegals driver's licenses, or don't enforce DWLS for illegals.

Another thing that would help with the chronic excuse of not enough funding to deport is seizing assets to pay for deportation. If you arrest an illegal with a car, seize it and use the proceeds to pay for a ticket home. If you serve an arrest warrant on a criminal alien, detain and deport all the illegal family members you find along the way. Raise a gang member, get deported.

Thank you for saying that, lonestar.

I don’t think FReepers who aren’t familiar with the geography of much of the Texas/Mexico border understand the problem. Building a fence along much of it would be colossal stupidity.

I’m a Texan and not a Perry fan, but he’s right on this one. And I’ll vote for him if he’s the best we can do.

But fences do work.

The Berlin Wall worked. The Israeli fence works today.

Sure, a border fence would be expensive. And it would take courage to effectively man them.

But I don't see any other reasonable alternative.

If you just use sensors, you'll get more of the catch-and-release like we have today. That's a complete joke.

If you put the Guard on the border, then what? The Guard can't stand along the border shoulder to shoulder. You'd have to give orders to shoot to kill. That would never happen.

I agree completely. People are letting their anger talk so loud their brains can’t think. There are tunnels now so there will be tunnels where ever a fence is built. Patrols with the power of enforcement and a foreign workers visa allowing a specific type of employment and time of stay need to be available and controlled by the Federal Government as States make their needs for workers known to the Government slots can come available.

The states all need to decide to get behind enforcing the laws we have and identifying illegal visitors, deporting them into their countries - far beyond the border by plane. While squatters from abroad are being empowered by liberals to stay and demand benefits, accommodations in our schools and workplaces, free medical care and monetary support they will flood any barrier that can be built. The Berlin wall was to keep Berliners in not foreigners out.

I agree with Perry, Americans need to stand together as a country and deport people who are not willing to make their legal commitment to America, speak our language and uphold our values of religious freedom, freedom of speech and civic responsibility. Any foreign worker should have his/her visa revoked and be deported if a crime is committed by them or if they are unable to find a job. No welfare. No more anchor babies, parents need to be green card holders to get citizenship for their children.

Berlin's 110 mile wall worked. Israel's 500 mile wall works well. China's 31,000 mile Great Wall did it's job. Yeah, better to waste $$$ on welfare, health care, food, education, housing, garbage disposal, road traffic, pollution, courts, prisons, potable water, and jobs those lazy Americans don't want, huh.

Agreed 1000%. A fence is an idiotic idea. It would cost a fortune and be in constant state of repairs. If there’s no boots enforcing and watching people break through the fence, it is useless.

Those touting a fence don’t know what the hell they are talking about.

Yes but he’s also not for doing anything else to secure the border. If he was he would have explained what he would do to secure it.

If he was, he would have done it by now using the powers he has as governor. But he has not.

Which means he would not do anything else to secure the border. No troops patrolling the border, no guard towers, no armed drones, no unarmed drones, no land mines, no dmz, no nothing.

ya know what; lonestar? That is the lame-est damned excuse I have ever heard. Have you ever seen an interstate highway??
Go buy yourself a cheap roadmap and look for roadways marked with and “I”. Before the interstate system, there was the Pennsylvania Turnpike—— you want to talk about terrain? Somehow or other, that wasn’t a waste of money, still in use.

What’s wrong with an “all of the above” approach? If Perry wants “boots on the ground” he damned well better be talking about them carrying live loads.
