MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.
Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.
The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

http://markraff.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/dead-sea-fence.jpg ~ neat shot of a piece of fence along the Jordan where the river runs into the Dead Sea. Little appreciated by outsiders every single drop of water flowing in the Jordan is already spoken for by the downstream users and is fully encumbered by laws of ownership, municipal authority, national laws, and international treaties and agreements. Where they don’t have a fence there are guys who are watching what you do and may shoot you!
General, we’re being over run.
No use stopping them now, private.
F ‘em. If anyone has a business that needs to something illegal to operate then they need to go bye bye.
I’ll believe that fences don’t work when they remove the one around the White House.
You ask: Does Perry advocate fencing in those locations where it would be of obvious tactical benefit?
You answer: No.
But that’s not what Perry suggests nor what he said today.
Here’s his direct quote:
“There are places along the border that strategic fencing worked, particularly in the metropolitan areas,” Perry said. “The idea that we’re going to build a wall from El Paso to Brownsville doesn’t make sense ‘cause the fact of the matter is you know, number one, you’d never get it built, and it’d cost billions of dollars ... by the time you go from Tijuana to Brownsville.” Perry said that he does support putting “boots on the ground” and using “aviation assets” (i.e. aerial drones) to secure the border.

Duh.
Look, I don’t even like Perry, but he’s right on this. The suggestion that we should fence the entire Texas/Mexico border is just absurd.
I hate it when FR dumbs down like this.
Great post. Can't wait for the response.
Wow, popular thread. 280+ comments
Any idea what he proposes?
They wouldn’t need that fence around the White House if it were in the middle of Big Bend.
Sheesh.
Interesting convo. I didn’t post the thread... but it seems to me that many Americans are VERY interested about the issue everyone is avoiding.
You put fences where you want to keep people out.
Sheesh.
. Guard the Borders!! .... "Gard a sil?"
Why do we have police, judges, lawyers, prisons? Perhaps they work out better than a wall around my house? I have no problem with people owning guns, having walls and dogs. I think that if we didn’t educate children that were here illegally, give away food stamps, medical care and college educations we would shed our illegals faster than rats from a sinking ship. Just as we have shed them from states that started enforcing the laws. The recession sent many more back to their countries than immigration authorities. We need to stack the deck in favor of America by requiring English and proof of legal status to conduct business in the USA.

The fence around East Germany was guarded with armed military.
You know, if you’re paying attention at all, it’s obvious this guy is playing both ends against the middle.
For instance he decries the violence along the border associated with drugs and illegal aliens, then goes to to address la Raza, an organization that champions the illegal immigrant.
You can’t have it both ways governor. Do you support illegal immigration and the groups that encouage them, or don’t you?
Of course the answer is in, but I wish more people word be honest about it.
“Dont worry. He wont try. Its ridiculous. Nowhere else to go anyway, right? A no vote for Perry is a whole vote for Obama, right?”
Its the same snakeoil they sold during Ahnold’s recall election, McCain’s election and countless other campaigns. Its all they’ve got.
from what I can tell after a quick google scan:
Perry supports troops, technology, and monitoring as the solution to illegal immigration.
No gates!
