The bad news for Palin fans? If NROs Robert Costa and CNNs Peter Hamby are right, tomorrows not the day. The good news? Per Hamby, the day may still be coming.
The source said Palin is attempting to burnish her image as an outsider and a reformer, reminding the audience of her record in Alaska and specifically highlighting her battles against what she called the states corrupt Republican political class that was in cahoots with the oil and gas industry.
Palin plans to unleash a furious criticism of crony capitalism and attack the permanent political class in both parties: thinly veiled criticisms of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has surged to the top of most polls for the Republican presidential nomination.
Political opponents have long accused Perry, who has held some form of elected office since 1985, of rewarding his allies and campaign donors with plum government posts and contracts.
Though she has no plans to mention Perry or any other Republican presidential hopeful by name, Palin will implicitly contrast herself against the current crop of GOP candidates and further define her brand in case she does decide to run.
Scott Conroy of RCP got a preview of the speech too and also seized on those phrases as veiled digs at Perry. Whether thats a case of him and Hamby reading things the same way independently or, more significantly, whether their sources inside Palins camp are pushing that reading on them, I cant tell. If she does end up taking a dig at Perry, the only reason to do it is that shes planning to announce herself in a few weeks. Criticizing him just to criticize him would be unthinkable given the mileage the left will get out of it, but it makes sense if shes running per her Ill jump in if theres no one else to carry the banner rationale from months ago. She needs to distinguish herself from Perry somehow in order to justify that logic and this would be one way. (Conroy notes that shell also tout her record as governor, another sign that shes in.) But dont jump to conclusions: Much depends on how all this is framed in the speech. By permanent political class, she may mean the Beltway; and the attack on crony capitalism might be aimed explicitly at Obama, with good reason. Who knows? She could throw us a curveball by praising Perry or the other nominees outright in the speech. Or maybe tomorrows the day after all and the leaks to Costa and Hamby that shes not announcing are merely a feint designed to throw the media off her trail.
John Fund thinks shes not running and will probably end up endorsing Perry, but if Hamby and Conroy are right about those veiled digs, that endorsement will be highly nuanced indeed. Via the Right Scoop, heres her old pal Karl Rove on Fox this morning warning her that shes doing damage to her prospective candidacy with this endless game of in or out?. Is he right? Her core supporters will forgive her anything, but Rasmussens latest finds 52 percent of Republicans think it would be bad for the GOP if she jumped in. No doubt Rick Perry agrees. Does Mitt Romney? Click the image to watch.
I have a very firm grip. The true reality is that neither one of us have any idea what Sarah Palin will decide or when she'll announce that decision. What happens after she announces her decision - in or out - is also unknown, although we can and will speculate. Don't make the mistake of believing that your opinion (or mine, for that matter) equates to 'reality'. We're posting opinions and speculation. Apparently, where Sarah Palin's possible candidacy is concerned, yours differs from mine. It happens. So what? No need to get grumpy about it.
Yes, it is interesting to note as one poster blithely informed me, that is where they disagree with their Chosen One...
(Asked if she would support Perry) If at the end of the line hes the one left standing, I would be extremely enthused about him because Im a believer in ABO anybody but Obama. So, absolutely. But theres still a long time in this process, Palin said,
For these folks 'NO ABO' means NBP
Once we had Broken Glass Republicans. Now we have cultists among us that have declared, If the cause needs to burn down, so be it, despite what Gov.Palin HERSELF said on the record.
Palin, Before Principle. Great.
Not even capable of being good Lemmings.
Why do you or others believe that Gov Perry is in bed with corporate interests insofar as to the detriment of his state? Because of the guardisil incident?
Has Rick Perry snuffed out small business in his state? Has the application of tax breaks/reductions been directed only to large corporations?
What is your definition of crony capitalism?
Yes we will see what Gov Palin says tomorrow. But why would she attack someone who is more in line with her than anyone else including Bachmann. Whom, I might add, allowed attacks on Gov Palin a few weeks back.
Bachmann is in it to become ‘queen’ and Gov Palin is absolutely right; Bachmann has no executive experience. That is obvious. But to flame another Governor with no substantial evidence is absolutely not the style of the Gov Palin that I’ve watched and followed for months.
She will however make mincemeat out of the marxist and I’m hoping Ken Crow...(hope she guts that guy like a moose)
Just curious...
Why is Bachman “over”. in your view?
“Once I do that she’ll not win back my vote in 2012.”
Hey, Mariner, be careful what you commit to. I did all your above, and I would still crawl through a mile of glass to vote for that woman. Remember, it’s not Sarah who’s acting like a button on a shithouse door, it’s all the Palin-know-it-all wannabes trying to outguess her. Trust me, that woman knows what she is doing. Her playing the obammy media whores like a harp gives me a chrissy matthews - if you get my drift.
Bye!
She has already said she has no plans to run for the Senate in AZ.
Really ?
Sarah's speech is going to be televised? Any idea what channels will be carrying it?
Boots on the ground over at C4P are saying people are already lining up to get a good spot for tomorrow. Hope the weather is nice there!
Have you noticed that many Sarah Palin supporters are very similar to supporters of another candidate (one who is actually running)?
My fervor for Sarah is because she's the only one (with an actual chance to win) that I truly believe is a Constitutional Conservative Patriot. I respect Bachmann, but I see no chance for her. I love Allen West, but too soon for him. I like DeMint & others, but I trust Sarah. I think Sarah is the most REAL politician since Reagan. Not perfect, not a genius, but REAL, and most important, a real Constitutional Conservative Patriot.
You said you’re done with her. I’m saying bye. BYE!
“Cue the orchestra and the golden lights....”
No phony Graecian pillars for this one.... You betcha...
This is news to me.
Again, she stated such in Iowa last month. The Palin threads have the exact quote.
Fair enough... I’ll see you guys in another (hopefully non-Palin running/not running) thread.
Bye.
But the way she plays the media and the bloggers with all this anticipation is priceless.-
I didn’t read or hear anything at all from Palin, herself.
Please explain how she is ‘playing’ the media?
Or are the media, playing, the media?
IMO She got in too early & peaked too soon. Perry's rise and her fall in the polls have shown that she was only doing well till somebody more acceptable came along.
Sarah hasn’t ‘made up her mind’?
Or you want people to ‘perceive’ Sarah hasn’t made up her mind.
Can’t fool all the people all the time...
