Sarah Palin Appearance at Tea Party Rally in Iowa ‘No Longer Confirmed’
WSJ ^ | August 31, 2011 | Danny Yadron

Posted on 08/31/2011 8:11:56 AM PDT by markomalley

Sarah Palin canceled her Saturday appearance at a tea party rally in Indianola, Iowa, a person close the former Alaska governor told The Wall Street Journal.

The person cited “continual lying” from event organizers at Tea Party of America, including a recent mixup over whether former U.S. Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell of Delaware would also speak.

Ms. Palin is known for last-minute schedule changes that whipsaw supporters and media across the country. But the latest decision is puzzling. Ms. Palin’s speech at the rally was viewed as her most high-profile appearance of the summer, fueling speculation she was indeed plotting to run for the Republican presidential nomination.

Attendees were reportedly traveling from across the U.S. to attend the rally in Iowa, which holds the nation’s first nominating contest next year.

The former governor will now appear at a Friday event in Des Moines sponsored by the group Conservatives4Palin. It is currently scheduled for 8 p.m. at The Machine Shed Restaurant, though the location will probably have to be changed, the person close to Ms. Palin said. Ms. Palin is still scheduled to appear at a Tea Party Express tour stop Monday in New Hampshire.

Ms. Palin may still hold an event Saturday, the person said, though she has no firm plans. It’s also possible she could still attend the Indianola tea party rally, the person said.

The former governor’s team decided to back out Tuesday night after rally organizers re-invited Ms. O’Donnell to speak on stage. Organizers had booked Ms. O’Donnell, who lost her 2010 bid for a U.S. Senate seat from Delaware, to speak but quickly withdrew the invitation in an effort to avoid controversy.

Or you can apply your self-described critical thinking skills and come to the conclusion that FReepers can back any candidate they see fit and not engage in Pavlovian salivating over Sarah Palin.

She never has planned on running ...just keeping her name in the news.

The Kardashians could take lessons from Sarah.

Then hit abuse a thousand times, take out an ad in the NYT and sacrifice goats to the gods. If you can’t read the context of that post and see that I was mocking SOL for posting several (as he called them” cheesecake pix pf Palin in a display of PDS, not conservatism, then just keep calling me a troll and trying to convince yourself it’s true.

I don’t think many people have any respect for someone who waits until an opponent stumbles. Most people have more respect for someone who takes on their opponents on their own merits, not just because they are weak.

The former is a predator, the latter is a scavenger.

She should stop stringing along her supporters. She’s hurting people.

Who is she stringing along? She said in no uncertain terms that her timeframe was Sept/October.

Today is Aug 31. How is she stringing anyone along? No one seems to be able to answer this question. Lots of people on this thread say that or similar, but no one says how or why. Considering that we are not even to the POTENTIAL day 1 of an announcement, where is the string? And HOW does it hurt anyone but herself exactly, considering we are ALL ahead of schedule? I’m one of her most vocal supporters here and I don’t feel any ‘hurt’.

Because people WANT her to announce and people have SPECULATED she will announce does not matter a whit. Perhaps they should read her actual words as to her intent and stop projecting their wants and desires until we all catch up with her stated intent?

Your own words prove my point. What she said was if I decide to run or not I’ll announce it in the Aug-Sep timeframe. September doesn’t start until tomorrow and it hath 30 days. If you think those words are tentamount to teasing you were never on any playground that I would recognize.

“FR is clearly not a good barometer of national popularity.”

Indeed, that is without dispute. However, I would venture that it is somewhat a barometer of the well right of center GOP base....more fiscal than moral though. The level of dedication shown by Palin supporters here on FR is a force to be considered. I still “think” (I don’t “know”) that homage to Sarah Palin will have to be paid by ANY candidate that wants to secure the base of the GOP - the right side conservatives.

I am not saying I am for or against this....just that I “think” (I don’t “know’) that this is the case.

I think it is Perrymania right now were people blindly follow someone they know little about. We know everything about Sarah.

Maybe. Perry’s my top pick right now, but it’s certainly not a mania for me. It’s a process of elimination.

“Remember Fredmania? I think Palinmania is Fredmania dragged out over a couple of years.”

Oh yeah! There are still “FredHeads” that still hate Huckabee because they think he conspired to lock Fred out. I do see the similarities. However, I think Palinistas are much more dedicated than the FredHeads were. Actually, I think they are more energized...and I think for good reason.

The only reason the conservative base of the GOP even showed up to vote in 2008 was because of Palin being on the ticket. They weren’t voting for McCain, they were voting for Palin. That fervor has only grown.

I still “think” (I don’t “know’) that ardent Palin supporters are significant enough in numbers that IF Sarah doesn’t get behind the eventual GOP nominee....it could cost that candidate enough votes to lose the election. I still “think” homage, in some public form, is going to be required to be paid to Sarah Palin. I’m not saying this is right or wrong....just that I “think” (don’t “know’) this is the situation.

I consider myself part of the conservative base, and Palin had nothing to do with me voting for McCain. I was voting against the socialist party. Same as always.

But I hear ya. She's got a pretty sizable amen corner. What it will all mean? Time will tell.

I get what you are saying. I think that if she sits it out, all things being equal, that her supporters would likely get behind the candidate/candidates that didn’t slag her. That said, if John X got in the race and Palin did not back him, I’d still vote for him If I thought he was the best candidate, but I think any candidate intentionally POing her base is a fool. FWIW.

Reporters work with ‘sources.’ Reporters are supposed to ‘double source’ for accuracy. It could reflect misunderstanding or disorganization within the SP inner circle. Obviously, sources close to SP either gave that information which appears to be a “difference” between ‘canceled’ and ‘put on hold.’

IS there a substantive difference, 3 days before a long scheduled event, for a keynote speaker to ‘cancel’ or ‘put on hold?’ When hundreds or thousands were going to the event, often at great personal expense, to see the keynote speaker?

If I’d booked a flight, or reserved a hotel room, my money’s gone. Or I don’t know whether to go or not.

If there were problems with the tea party event, as there inevitably are at large events, the keynote speaker would let them get straightened out by the organizers. The keynote speaker does not put out word that s/he is putting the speech ‘on hold.’

“Reporters work with ‘sources.’ Reporters are supposed to ‘double source’ for accuracy.”

Supposed to yes. But they do not in my experience in the industry. And they very often cite “unnamed sources” so they can write the story they want to write in the manner they want to write it, or just to cover their bias knowing that “privilege’ takes a court case to overcome.

NEVER believe a reporter you do not personally know. If one tells you water is wet, check it for yourself to be sure.
